Thanks Johnny, I'm finding it hard to unearth details on the end of the Slazenger/Hogan agreement but hopefully I'll get there.

Nice history and back story on Slazenger. I was aware of affiliation with Ben Hogan Golf, but knew nothing about Gradidge. There are some courses that I play that are proud of their rough (on purpose) with my fade (i.e. slice) off the tee I find myself there more times than I care to mention. Thanks for sharing your vlog, very interesting.

Thanks for the comment. I suspect that Slazenger were happy to let Gradidge look after the golf side of things, until they noticed that golf was growing very quickly in popularity and that they had one of the biggest stars in the sport signed up in Bobby Locke. The potential for greater sales was recognised and the club branding switched from Gradidge to Slazenger. A pity that they sold out to Dunlop so soon afterwards or who knows where they might have gone.

Wow! Thanks for that little history lesson. I'm building a set of pyratone Bobby Locke irons. The interesting thing is they have Slazsnger"s" on the sole (yes with the "s" on the end), and loft and lie angles stamped into the back. I also have one of those Gradidge putters, it's in the bag! When you reviewed your putter and talked about alignment, I was like - yes I get it. I've got a kangaroo hide, double sided tape and some cloth tape (to build up the grip) just waiting on whipping and my vibration dampeners to arrive and I'll have all of them reconditioned (2-9 iron) except the 6.

Thanks for the comment. The Bobby Locke irons sound interesting, are they like the Gradidge Parmaker shown top left in the picture at 13:50? Those are also Pyratone shafts. I suspect that "Slazenger's" is the earlier spelling, it's spelt that way on the Bobby Locke Super Registered on the right in the picture at 14:25 but not on the "STM" model of 1956 in the picture at 14:40

@@deviusfeilds I'm guessing that you're in Australia, which explains why I've not seen that model before. 😃 I've seen the Bobby Locke Maestro which I believe is also an Australian model. I love it when the loft and lie are stamped on clubs, helps to know if they're where they should be or if they've been adjusted over the years.

Thanks Nick, excellent video and history including Gradidge which you know is close to my heart. Note the comment on London being a pre war indicator. What are your thoughts on punch dot - any evidence of that being a pre war marker?
@ClassicGolfClubs
@ClassicGolfClubs 3 жыл бұрын
Punch dot certainly indicates an early design. I think the difficulty comes in working out which designs were carried over into production after the second world war. For instance I suspect that there weren't any clubs produced pre-WWII with Bobby Locke's name on them as he hadn't achieved enough. But as mentioned in the video, his name appears to have been added to existing designs, including with punch dot face, in the early post-war years. Not until the country was getting back onto its feet after the war did we start to see new designs appearing. I'd imagine that most, if not all, post-war designs were lined face models. So I think you could say that a punch dot face strongly indicates a pre-war design, even if it was produced post-war!
