The gambling sub genre might be worth a bigger dive. It's such an interesting and specific sub genre and has a lot of films (good and bad) with some of the biggest stars of the day. Doesn't need to be too long either, as they do get repetitive. You can probably cap it off with some commentary on the From Vegas To Macau trilogy and the changes in the HK market since 1997.

Without saying the cliche terms of "so bad it's good" or "hate watch", you describe the feeling of watching a movie that you know is just not something you can comfortably recommend to someone, but also one that you know that you absolutely adore to watch and one that if someone were to leave behind their critical eye, they can simply enjoy themselves! I grew up in that era in Hong Kong and can admit that the phrase used in this video ("Hong Kong flick" in Chinese) was usually used to imply a low-quality / trashy / low-budget flick. I didn't watch a lot of the films listed but the video definitely brings back a lot of childhood memory including the deluge of gambling movies, jinagshi (Chinese zombies) movies, and Crazy Safari lol. It wasn't until I moved to the US before I found that (and was surprised) HK films from particular eras are actually quite appreciated and influential in the film circles and I didn't watch a lot of the good famous HK film classics until I moved away.

Not to mention the 'Angel' craze. After the success of "Iron Angels" (1987) w/Moon Lee (Moon Lee Choi-Fung ) there were a ton of Hong Kong films with either 'Angel' or 'Angels' in the title. There were 2 direct sequels to "Iron Angels," both w/Moon Lee, but many more Angel films. Some had Moon Lee in them, like "Angel Enforcers," "The Revenge of Angel," "Angel Force," Angel Terminators II," and "Angel's Project." Some didn't. I'd love to see you do a video on Moon Lee some day. I've also seen some crazy films out of India. "Dhamaal" is an unofficial remake of two American films, "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963) and "Rat Race" (2001). Strange seeing Mad World as a musical. It also spawned a number of sequels.

I don't know if it's from Hong Kong, but there's this film that has been a mystery in my household for over 20 years now and it would fit in with the style of some of the films shown here. It was shown really late at night on SBS (Australia's home of world movies and foreign language entertainment as well as cult cinema and special interest programming) and my mother and I just happened to catch the end of it. We've always wondered what it was and where it was from as it looked insane from what we saw. It was a long time ago and my memory of the film has reduced it to 1 scene. The bad guy has lost his eyebrows (I can't remember how it happened) and so he's going around with band-aids where his eyebrows should be. He goes into a convenience store and has an argument with a young woman who ends up saying (at least according to the subtitles) "No eyebrows? Serves you right!". I've asked a lot of people about this movie but no one has ever been able to identify it. I'd love to be able to track it down one day and watch it from the start as it looks like a fun movie. I'm guessing from the way it looked, it was probably made in the 70s or 80s but I could be wrong. I wish I could remember more about it.

I remember watching Sex and Zen in cinema theater :D This movie turned out to be more than just an exploitation, and contained a truly positive moral message.

Yo shout-out from Indonesia! Yea I remember watching most of these titles in our local tv channels. Hate to remember, but Riki-Oh traumatized me so bad and Steven Hao movies are the remedies.

As a kid who grow up in late 70's- and 80's I enjoyed this episode, especially the explanation about Jacky Chan first stage name as Cheng Long or Chen Lung, as I remember I only knew him as Jacky Chen after My Lucky Star before that I knew him as Cheng Long or Chen Lung.

I loved the God of Gamblers series - even the Chow branch. All for the Winner was my favorite of the Chow branch, but Back to Shanghai was hilarious. My friend liked to watch Stephen Chow movies in Vietnamese. I would watch them with her. They had Vietnamese dubs & non-English subtitles, but I could still follow them. This caused me to look for English version & to try to get more familiar with them. Some got really far out & wacky, like Chow's "Fist of Fury II". Mad Monk & Flirting Scholar were interesting, too.

Haha, the vampire movies! I loved them! One of my favourite tropes in this genre is that if you hold your breath, the vampire can't sense you. That was a gem!!!

I spent my childhood watching so many of these movies on the weekends. The crazy horror-comedies were my favorites. So over the top! These were all of my Saturday afternoon movies, HBO family nights, drive-in theater double features... The mid-80's were wild. 😎😵🤣

Oh man, Riki-oh is just something else. I dont even know why i watched it when i was a boy. Back then i used to stay up late at night because i managed to get my grandpa's old tv to work. After 10 pm when my parents asleep i always turn it on and watched lots of adults show, and Riki is one of it. While it is so gory, this movie makes me aware that there is fake blood and gore make up. After watching it, i never got scared watching local horror and gore movie. Man i miss my childhood

In the 2000s, HK movies is more to use pretty boys or girls to sell a movie, rather than good content. I remember Gen X Cops, Vampire Twins

I discovered CAT-III Hong Kong movies back in the 90s, I was never disappointed lol! They were so playful, very fun, not your usual gore or adult movie. I remember that kung fu movie where their fighting styles were based on sex moves, it became something of a hidden amusement at school when the video spread lol! Some of my classmates would go to my place and then watch these weird Hong Kong movies that I downloaded from the net from some kind of rare cult movie site (which has shut down a long time ago unfortunately, forgot its name but it had z and cult in it).

I have some weird feeling this extravagant, over-the-top ridiculous film style might come back into popularity one day. Maybe even soon.

The "kung fu comedy" genre, which probably started with "Drunken Master", was so popular at the beginning that many opportunists made them, ended up with thousands of finished films but few got released. Legend has it that they are still in their cans in a warehouse somewhere.
