What sort of timber is it Mick. Tough splitting but you made short work it. Big rings.

Gerry: I am told that it is a hybrid between a cotton and a poplar tree. It is very dense, so I'm hoping that it will make good firewood. You can see the stump in the background. It is four feet wide at the base. The ring that I am breaking up is about three and a half feet. There will be a lot of swinging before it is all ready to dry out as firewood. Apart from size, in many of the rings (not this one) there are a lot of knots and dead branches, which makes the work somewhat more challenging at times.

@@michaelkearney5562 Bark looks like aspen, must be a hybrid poplar of some kind? I’ve never seen that type of timber split, but this stuff looks good and dense. Aspen/cottonwood is a poor firewood generally speaking but perhaps not true for this species - time will tell! What part of the country is this??

@@04442369 Leixlip. I am told it is a poplar/cotton hybrid. It had better make good firewood. The labour expenditure in processing it into firewood will be considerable. It is quite dense, so I'm optimistic.
