From one old man to another. LOL Thank you for the video, I enjoyed the demonstration. I will finally be putting a handle on my hookaroon head. Saved it from a thrift shop in a logging town some years ago. Using it will save alot of time and pain.

Sounds awesome! I wish I could find an old one in a second hand shop! maybe I should take a trip to the States... I think I would need more than a suitcase to get all my souvenirs back though! Thanks for watching! Cheers!

Nice demo. Thanks. I just ordered my 1st hookaroon (my lower back is killing me in my elder years) even though I always knew about this logging tool all my life ; I always thought this tool was for wimps. I'm afraid I may have waited too long to get one. - N Idaho -

As a young forestry school grad many years ago I was put on a landing sorting tree length timber hauled up by a big skidder with 12 choker chains. I had a pulp hook and a pickaroon to help me. You learn real quick how useful a pickaroon is because the landing has to be cleared and sorted before the skidder gets back. The best trick with either tool is to hook a big junk low down on the side and spin it as you pull - way easier than just sticking and pulling. Use the other logs or pieces on the ground. Get the junk spun up onto them and use them to support it as you pull/spin it along. I could move an 18 foot log 12" on the small end this way. Close in work goes to the pulp hook. Stick the piece but remember to give your wrist a flick to the side to release the tool when you throw the wood. Don't sharpen your points to a needle shape. Old timers would sharpen then whack the point down on an anvil to make a "duck's bill" point that won't stick. Frozen wood needs a different point than sticky summer wood. My goal was always to be sitting on the log pile looking bored when the skidder got back. Sweat would be dripping off my nose sometimes but he never caught me fighting with the wood as he came back - I was always waiting for him. Oh, except for that one day I forgot my pickaroon - I would rather forget that one.

Great video! I love historic tools. Keep the videos coming! (Side note: I have a couple of hookaroons. They work great in lighter, softer woods, but not so well with hard and heavy oaks, etcetera; at least in my experience. Nevertheless, as I said, they work great for me in pine and softer hardwoods).

Wish I'd known about these when I was working on farm years ago,spent a lot of time felling/logging in winter and would have saved my back a lot😟still do a bit of firewood and also now blacksmithing/metalworking so will be making some of these,maybe one with axe blade on one side😉😉
@wayawolf1967 Жыл бұрын
Dislodging the firewood round is easier with a pickaroon rather than a hookaroon due to the straight point. Now for some odd reason I want a macaroon...... LOL

Thanks for the video I've got a pickaroon but rarely use it and didn't even know it was called a pickaroon. It doesn't go into the wood as easily as yours though so maybe I need to give it a tickle with a file to sharpen it

Someone on KZbin actually knows the difference in a pickaroon/hookaroon/axearoon. I would like a axearoon, but haven't been able to find one. Heck, I have been trying to find someone that could forge one.

I have found multi purpose tools always sacrifice function for convenience. For instance you can't move around as freely if you have two sharp bits. You also want as little weight as possible for a tool of mobility
@Gideon_Judges62 жыл бұрын
@@chanmang yeah they were really designed as s compromise if you're carrying things out to the field. Two heads, one handle = less weight and less cumbersome but also means if you just break one handle then both tool heads are down.
