In recent years, the links between sleep and mental health have been slowly unravelled. We are beginning to understand that not only does mental health impact sleep, but also that poor sleep has important consequences on our psychology.
This lecture explores this complex relationship, and highlights the importance of sleep as a major factor in our mental wellbeing. The lecture covers strategies to manage disturbed sleep, and touches on other disorders such as nightmares and night eating syndrome.
A lecture by Guy Leschziner recorded on 13 March at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

Much needed info! Medications often exacerbate the problems they are meant to cure. And then when physicians are ignorant of what is happening the patient is subjected to even more suffering and frustration. Thanks for this excellent presentation.

Sleep and mental health are closely intertwined. Lack of sleep can lead to increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and irritability, while getting enough quality sleep can improve mood and overall mental well-being.

I enjoy directing the dream that I happen to be in, up to the point where I lose control. Then it's usually time to rise and get ready for work.

I suffer from insomnia my whole life 😢 it has made me very isolated. I am hypersensitive to light and sound. For many years i have used flurazepam 30 mg and for ten years i have Lorazepam 4mg. Sometimes i dont swallow pills but then i am awake all night. Sorry for complaining.Going to take two tablets Lorazepam trying to get some sleep. My granddaughter is 2 years and i going to her birthday . Also i walk with my dogs and reading my glasses😅

Interesting discussion but would be interested if he covered biphasic or polyphasic sleep. It seems most of what was discussed is based on a monophasic sleep schedule. There is some data that biphasic sleep schedules were more common throughout history and wonder the effects or correlations exist in individuals that follow other sleep patterns.

I have a slight nitpick about the camera work: at ~23:00-24:00 the actigraph is displayed before he's given an explanation of it; but then when he _is_ giving an explanation of it, the camera is (not all that helpfully) focusing on him rather than on the graph. (Yes yes, this is the internet, and rewinding has never been easier...)

Gresham has traditionally been rather bad with making sure all the slides are easy to read in the video recordings. It could be worse, a lot of the 5 year+ old lectures don't even show most of the slides at all.

I disagree. The term 'sleep hygiene' makes perfect sense. After you eliminate you use toilet paper and flush. Basic hygiene children must learn. When you take a shower you do certain things to get clean. Washing clothes and bedding. Hygiene and sleep may have been improperly taught or needs to be expanded when someone is suffering from sleep issues. It was revolutionary the first time I learned about sleep hygiene, the doctors and therapists when through a list and talked about medication. Hygiene gave me specific things I could do to increase natural sleep that no one else told me. If you don't like the term, fine. I happen to think it gets right to the point. Sleeping better can be rather logical and it can work.
