Choir and orchestra together would be phenomenal. Even the choir singing on "Mm". Love your work. Ever since 2013

This has been my favorite song for literally 15 years. I was in 8th grade and heard it for the first time from my high-school select choir, it changed my life. I joined the choir myself and learned about music specifically because of this song, thank you so much

@Sheila Lomax it's just called sleep, Eric tried making it to the workd of the Robert frost poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, but there was a problem getting the rights to the words, so he contacted a friend who is also a poet and had him write entirely new lyrics to the song, it's beautiful

Just picked this piece up a couple of days ago in my high school, and this is genuinely one of the best pieces i have ever heard. The emotion you get out of this song is just so amazing, and i can't wait to keep playing it.

I had a masterclass by the great Peteris Vasks once. He told me that string orchestras and choirs are the same world to him. This proves it! As a composer, I also like to think this way.

I’m in high school, and I play the upright bass for our orchestra. My director had us sight read this today, but we watched this video first to get an idea of what it was supposed to sound like. I just wanted to say that this is truly the most beautiful thing I’ve heard. Words cannot describe how much I love this piece. I rarely comment on anything at all, but this is so amazing that I felt the need to do so.

THANK YOU for taking the time to comment. It really made my day. Please tell your director -- and all the other players in your group -- that I said hello and send my best regards.

Also, if you end up recording your performance will you send me a link? (You can post it to any of my social media accounts)? I'd love to hear what your director does with it, and how all of you play it.

Sleep is amazing - my second favorite piece by Eric! But October is my absolute favorite. However, I am biased because I got to perform it and had the awesome euphonium solo.... 🙂
@justadude2572 жыл бұрын
Also, @Eric Whitacre, you'll like this story. One of my students (I teach math) also played euphonium and had the solo on October. One day, he was in my office and we were rocking out to October, singing and conducting it while listening to a recording and following along in the score. 🙂

Hello Eric, Just want to say that I am a big fan of your music and have enjoyed the choral version of this piece ever since I first heard the sublime Molto Cantible version on KZbin in 2009. This new Sleep with strings is equally as eloquent! Bravo to you and Dr. Holbrook and the orchestra!

This version feels like something Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori would have written for Halo. There's facets of Halo 3, as well as Halo: Reach in here. The dissonance is absolutely something they utilized in Reach.

How does one go about properly notating for string orchestra if there are too many voices and it won't fit on the standard Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Basses notation? I'm trying to learn things on my own. Any books or links I could read? Thank you. Btw, this is an amazing arrangement!
@Thunshot Жыл бұрын
In the case, you’d have to split the part into two parts (called divisi). For example, half the cellos would play one part and half the cellos would play a different part.

I love this piece, but this performance seems static to me somehow. Great effort, but conductor, please consider adding some movement to breathe life into this masterpiece.
