I have just realized I am a very advanced man in regards to sleep. I sleep my ass off every day, and so does my wife. We build our lifes around our natural hours of sleep, instead of fitting it in our schedule. I guess that must have an influence on how young we look and feel and how relaxed and happy our lifes are. I agree that a change of mentality would be welcome. We hide our sleeping habits from everybody for fear of being labelled as lazy. Officially the reason why no one can reach me before 11 am is that "I am in a daily call-in session with an overseas client".

@17:30... she doesn't just want to get through the motions, or just get stuff done... she really wants to bring joy into what she's doing. I think that is essential to engaging and taking part in everything you do. I like that point.

Thanks Marie! This is gold. I'm so happy people like Arianna Huffington are talking about this issue. So many of us struggle with sleeping issues is unreal! I struggled with insomnia when I was in school and it was a horrible experience for me. I literally felt like I was losing my mind. I remember one bout of sleepless nights - I was heading to my 72 hours without any sleep, which wasn't from lack of trying. I would lay in bed and pray for sleep to come to me and sometimes it did, but most nights it never showed up. Anyway, I experienced what seemed like an actual scary event, that I found out later is called an "Awake Dream" state. At the time I had no idea what had happened to me so I swore up and down it was real and I was going mad. It all had me very afraid for my life so I decided to take control of my life again. I decided that I had to shift all the negative stuff I was doing to myself that might have prevented me from falling sleeping and staying asleep. I limited my nicotine intake, eliminated caffeine, and I shut off all my electronics about 2 hours before it was bedtime. Then I would get into bed and either meditate while I was in bed or read a captivating book - they both helped me to fall asleep and eventually helped me to break my negative sleeping patterns.

I love her!! I also make a nightly ritual that includes: sleepy tea, lavender spray on my bed and my essential oil diffuser. Sleep is important and my goal is to change some of my priorities, even if that means saying no to some late night events. ❤️

The pattern I've notieced is that most of us have to go through periods of massive overwork (if not worcaholism). It took me over 3 years of breaking my back on working to much to learn that getting more done is worthless if you "hate being around yourself", as Arianna put it. What's the point if you start despising everything because of sleep deprivation? Quality of life over getting every single *** thing done! You won't appreciate it anyway if all you're dreaming about is a pillow. Thank you ladies for the interview, loved it! :)

Finding a quite nook to get work done during the day, rather than waiting for everyone else to finally go to bed late at night (they can be so noisy!) could really help me make sleep a priority in my life. I am trying to build my own creative business online, and my creativity can only thrive in a quiet, calm, dark, and undisturbed environment... which usually translates to 11:00 PM- 2:00 AM. If I could get my creative work done at an earlier hour, then I could very well get more sleep! As for things I'll be starting tonight? Perhaps I will brainstorm when and where I can find the idea conditions for creative work at some other point throughout my day. (Without waking up earlier!) Great video, as always!

What an amazing interview. I've been focusing on making sleep a priority over the past couple of months and especially going to sleep and waking earlier. I'm still fine tuning my routines, but even if I don't manage to do them perfectly every single day, it's still been a game changer. This interview has given me great actionable steps to improve my routine. Thanks!

Up until my dad died when I was 15, I could have slept through anything and easily 12 hours. Ever since then I wake at the slightest noise and can wake every hour during the night. Drives me nuts!! Hard to break a 20 yr habit at this stage!

The best quality sleep is before midnight. As a general rule, the National Sleep Foundation recommend falling asleep somewhere between 8 p.m. and midnight. They also recommend 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Power naps are welcome too. Social media detox 1 hour before going to bed is also important to relax. Music for relaxation, aromatherapy and relaxing baths are also very helpful. And as we are product of habit, yes, it's important to have a sound relaxation routine. Because well-being is paramount to success. You cannot perform at 100% if you’re functioning at 10%!

Arianna is such a beautiful person, just like Marie, I pretty much enjoy every video you post for us!... I always try to sleep 8 hours, I've noticed I'm highly productive after this, and the opposite if I deprive myself with less than 7 hours... I have also noticed that low lights for our bedrooms are a nice help as well, in order to get to sleep faster, as I had very bright lights before and this caused me to take a longer time to fall sleep.

starting tonight i will set up my sleep kit.this was so informative...so required. giving so much attention to sleep- yes... its vital for our well being. Sleep is so important and yet we don't take it seriously and eventually invite health problems. instead if we take sleep more seriously and pay attention to it like a baby that needs love and care...wow...it will do us so much good. Thank you Marie for this lovely interview with Ariana and like you correctly said - she is doing so much good for the world and you Marie- you are bringing it all to us through your show and so you are wonderful! Thank you.

Hi, I loved this video, I feel related with this. I don't have problems to sleep, I just put my head in my pillow and drop dead for the whole night, but I have realized that when I don't sleep the following day is a "lost day" I can't do a thing, no matter how hard I try. I took a while to discover this, but everything made sense when I started to sleep regularly, It was surprising the change in my mood and my productivity.

Thank you Marie & Arianna for putting together this beautifully articulate and succinct video about this hugely important topic. Reading 'Thrive' changed my life and validated my business choices and mindset of productivity Vs business and you do the same thing for rest and sleep in this video together. I definitely took away from this the value of creating a sleep kit which I love as a creative gift idea for myself and the people I care about (as this is one of my primary Love Languages). What I will implement starting tonight is more of slow wind down process that involves no screens anywhere near me for a designated time prior to hitting the sack. Hopefully millions of people watch this and get this concept of the how vital the sacred ritual of sleep actually is in order to live a full and rich life in every respect. 😃

That book is on my list, as is her website! One of the secrets I have for going to sleep is having a bath or a shower as soon as I get home , I work evenings so my work goes to the teeth with my sleep. After that I lay down in our bed with my partner all cuddled or leaning on him talking about our days and we put each other to sleep just by being close. I get changed and fall asleep. This doesn't always work and so I have proposed this to myself and anyone else who wishes to try it. Before I have my shower I should turn down the lighting of my bedroom. During my bath or shower I should have candles lit or the heat lamp on instead of the vanity lights. After my shower I should get dressed in my sleep clothes and lay in bed to tell my partner about my day.

Oh the irony - I haven't slept through the night consistently since my daughter was born 23 years ago. I used to find myself falling asleep at stop signs and red lights on my commutes to and from work. I haven't done that in about four years thank goodness, but just last night, I got a whopping three hours and change in sleep last night. I will be implementing a sleep ritual pronto because this truly is not a good way to spend the day...

Thank you for such a great video, Marie! My question is: how do I find out if I have the "short cycle" genetic mutation? I have struggled for a long time to get "enough" sleep, but I feel worse when I get closer to 8 hours than 5. I've been told I don't sleep a lot because I am too hooked on "being productive," but now I'm wondering if that's not the case. Thank you!

Arianna can share her experience about being a fantastic newspaper editor. However, she is getting press on her expertise as a sleep expert when she simply gathered information. Maria have a doctor or naturopath share about the importance of sleep. She says it is new science what she is sharing is decades old. Arianna’s book is a best seller because she has well earned presence in her industry but she is not a medical expert. Too many people are seen as experts in a field they never studied in. Correct me if I am wrong maybe Arianna did study biology and psychology related to sleep. I studied these areas and there is nothing revolutionary about what she is sharing. Today, I see books on Yoga by people who are not teachers but students of Yoga. I do believe to keep the quality of our knowledge high we need experts. Maria someone who summaries your knowlege on your site in a video is not an expert they are simply sharing. They don’t have your experience. I welcome comments.
@justas3165

It was a small conversation about sleep, though. Did you read that book? If not, try to read it and maybe you will change your thoughts that there is nothing new. I agree with you as experts have to got high knowledge by dedicating their time to explorations. Even if she is not expert, we still would get the same information, but from scientists, however the most important thing is subject and evidences, not who are representing that subject. And it is great thing, that someone who is famous sharing useful information and helping a lot of people. Isn't it? I welcome your comments also.

I have a crazy work schedule, they used to make me work 9 am for 3 days then 11 am then give me a day off and put me at 11 pm, like yesterday I worked at 2 pm and tonight at 8 pm, so I think it have affected me tremendously I just turned 27 years old and I. deeply depress so sometimes I just don't do anything at all so I just sleep for tons of hours or I don't sleep at all, sometimes I sleep for 15 hours , and I take pills to sleep, I've been taking pills for years because I just can't sleep, so it Is affecting me emotional and in my job too, I am always in bad mood and sad and depressed and I sleep way too much sometimes I can't be productive at all, and I just think if I could just change that but I don't know how!!! I've been before for a week taking pills wake up and take another one so I stayed slept.. is there anything that I could do to change that and be more productive? it seems I can't not have any motivation I also gained over 40 pounds ..

I know how you feel Kamila- I had the same with my job a few years ago. I'd recommend looking for another job that gives you normal hours as the changing roster will only continue to give you anxiety about sleeping and make it hard for you. In the meantime you can try a melatonin capsule (1 mg only about 30 mins before bed) and have a sleep routine- eg: turn the lights down very low + no electronics, have a soothing tea, rub lavender essential oil on your feet and a big one- do a meditation when you get into bed. I started with the Yoga Nidra- you can download a variety of free Yoga Nidra apps- I found this excellent for sleep specifically. You will get to the end of the meditation and feel tired and calm, and be able to roll over and with a still mind and fall into sleep. If it doesn't work, do the meditation again. I also would read a very dry book... your mind focuses on the book and you stop thinking about your day.... then because the book is so dry, you stop reading after 15 mins or so and you're ready to sleep. It's still a challenge with the shifting roster though, so work on getting another job.

Also- I forgot to mention, I found magnesium is excellent for helping you sleep. I use Ancient Minerals magnesium gel- you can rub about 1 heaped teaspoon into your belly or back - it's very potent and absorbs much better than magnesium supplements. Keep at using it- don't just try for one night. It'll also help reduce stress and increase your energy levels. Amazing stuff magnesium. You can google "magnesium benefits" to read up on it.

Anika is right. Meditating and Journaling can help a lot. Same with Float Tanks :) If you wake up at 3am with a racing heart, maybe ask yourself, "Why am I waking up at 3am with a racing heart?" and allow yourself to free-write in a journal whatever comes to your mind and heart :)
