After buying the individual lesson, I purchased the "Learn To Play C6 Lap Steel" download, and in my opinion it's well worth checking out. Tons of information, tabs, explanations, examples of techniques, a great selection of songs to learn/play, etc. Not affiliated in any way, but believe in giving props to individuals like this, it's as advertised. Also, after purchasing, I had a download question and Joe responded within 30 minutes. Lap steel is an underrated instrument, just love the amazing range of possible tones, especially paired with some delay and reverb. Looking forward to learning more, thanks JoeDoc:)

After buying numerous cheaper c6 books and dvds and being very disappointed with the all of them I bought the 2 disk set off ebay. I wish I'd bought these first. They pretty much contain everything I need to at least play along with my backing tracks at home. I think it will be a long time of practice to outgrow these dvds but at least I cant blame the teaching anymore. I can already play sleepwalk respectably after a month of learning, and im picking up so many tips just by watching bits every day. like today ive learned just bending one string I turn all the top minors into major chords. seems simple but I never would have thought to do it. fully recommend these dvds and e book. I didnt think i would need the ebook but its more in depth than just watching the dvd... learning to love my lap steel...

C6 Lap Steel lessons are pretty sparse here on KZbin and as a beginner Lap Steel player, what I found was more advanced for what I wanted or I didn't like their teaching style. For the price of what it would cost for an hour Lap Steel lesson you can Purchase Joe's 2 CD set. It's very well laid out and easy to follow and after watching just few short video's you can grasp the basic concepts that would make this video less intimidating to a beginner. I'm enjoying his videos and after for months of frustration, I finally have a sense of direction on this instrument. Thanks Joe
Jan.2023 - I’m just seeing this now. I thought your performance was terrific. IMHO Santo+Johnny’s version set the gold standard for how a steel guitar should sound. You did a great job of recreating their sound and vibe, especially the harmonics. Bravo!

Hello JoeDocMusic, Back in the C6 mood again. I inherited a huge stash of vintage "Western & Square-dance" band instruments and ended up with a Pineapple MOT Yellow Volu-tone C6er no amp. A few years back. I converted it to a P-90 with new mini pots as it's super small. Almost like a violin size. Does the job and has some mojo. Then in the last few days of 2019 (as I write) I just scored a matching ensemble of the same Volu-tone with the Amp (no energizer?) So maybe late 1936... it is a 2 prong at the GTR with the BNC round washer type of screw to a stereo TRS on the amp end?. It is very played, yet minty fresh. Taking it to my amp tech near Sacramento (Skip Simmons Vintage Amp) he goes to the guitar show every year coming up very soon. Just thought I would say hey. Little tiny amp with black and big bottle tubes. Things like this are only original once. It needs to be brought up slow on his Variac, after testing the tubes. It's a time capsule in the case, mucho candy. A gold braided 2 rings bar and a Bakelite bar. Literally Christmas from who knows why? eBay 250 delivered? I thought I was getting it from LA turned out to be in Japan with a Master Navy man who MAC Flighted it via USPS To my place and it got delivered! You sound Amazing and as always inspire so many...Peace and Maximum Respect ~ Loo in Willerz, Ca. I-5 north

Good day Joe. I received delivery of of my first lap steel yesterday evening and I'm really fired up! I stayed up most of the night and started working on Sleep Walk thanks to your great performance and instruction. If I may ask: I also purchased a Dunlop 920 tone bar. It's great quality, but I'm wondering if the weight might be an issue. It's a medium and weight 7.5 oz. Size is 7/8 x 5 1/4. The size feels good and it sounds great, but maybe it's a bit heavy for a lap steel, or maybe just a bit heavy for me. I'm considering getting a lighter one. Dunlop makes a Medium Light - .33 lb and a Light - .3 lb. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks again for your terrific teach! I am so encouraged to find myself getting engaged in learning to play steel at this "senior" stage of my life! Blessings!
@joedocmusic8 жыл бұрын
Hi there - thanks for writing! Glad to give my 2 cents... Probably all it's worth! In my humble opinion, as long as it's not a lead pipe, weight of the bar is something you'll just adjust to over time. It will affect your vibrato, for example, simply due to inertia; a lighter bar can be shaken a lot faster than a heavier one. It's actyally for this reason han for any other that I prefer the heavier of my bars in general... keeps my nervous vibrato a bit "smoother! best wishes, joe

I am thinking of taking on a steel guitar teacher locally in Chicago to try to learn to play Sleepwalk. I am a keyboard player, and I'm intrigued by the idea of performing Sleepwalk on the actual instrument it was done on, because I am fascinated with 50s "1-6-4-5" songs. I am thinking that a steel guitar would be easier for me to play because it's played horizontally like a keyboard. I tried taking up standard guitar when I was a teenager, and I couldn't do the fingering with the instrument being vertical. I play keyboard by ear, so it would just be a matter of learning my way around the guitar.

@joedocmusic11 ай бұрын
I emailed you r/e the "tapped" harmonics - it really just looks tapped, I'm plucking with my thumb after placing the fingertip on the string... sort of a short firm pluck of the string and immediately lifting the finger. Aim for half the string length (12 frets) but experiment a bit above and below to find the sweet spot for your own finger placement :) -j

This is a very helpful instructional video; with the overhead position, tablature, and explanation. I was recently gifted a '56 consolette and I'm really trying to do it justice. Tunes like this melt my heart! My lap steel is an 8 string, tuned in C6 and E9. Trying to translate the 6 string tabs, adapting the structure to my 8 string is proving a bit difficult. In this video, is your highest string a G in place of an E? From the lowest to highest strings, my C6 order is A-C-E-G-A-C-E-G. Am I correct in assuming that you are tuned to C-E-G-A-C-G? There are so many iterations of standard/alternate tunings! I love it, but it's frustrating at times.
@joedocmusic5 жыл бұрын
Hi Zach, In this video, the tuning is C-E-G-A-C-E which is quite convenient for you - you can think in terms of having this video's tuning on your instrument, but with an additional string on the top and bottom. The C6 Lap Steel method on our site will also fit this very well, since all the chord forms are going to translate perfectly across the strings. The key to this is the tuning in triads, both ACE and CEG. Sounds like I need an 8-string! ;-) best wishes, and a happy new year's to you! -joe

Hey Joe. I finally downloaded your tab on this version and thank you. I think I'm going to need some help memorizing the fingerboard. With my background in music as a former music teacher and musician myself, I know music theory and understand the concept of C6 with major chords on the bottom 3 strings and minor chords on the top 3. Is there a fingerboard chart that I can download and put on my Guyatone lap steel fingerboard that would help me with that memorization? Maybe a fingerboard chart with note names? What is your advice? Thanks.

Hey Steven! Check in the eBook - there should be a chart with all the notes for the C6 tuning in each position inside. You can use the "print range" function to just choose that one page so you don't print out the whole shebang! cheers, joe

With picks, you can use a knuckle behind the thumbpick to do harmonics.

+Senny Stevens Like false or pinch harmonics on a regular guitar? I wouldn't have thought of that, WoW! Great idea! Maximum Respect ~ Loo

+Loo Wood Santo uses PALM harmonics on the original Sleep Walk, and also a different tuning E13th.

Thank you very much for the video!!! It inspired me so much that I made my own lapsteel from ashwood with a lipstick pickup salvaged from a tele. The only problem is I can't make up my mind about the tuning. I'm considering C6 and DADGAD

Sounds great!!! I notice you don't use any finger picks on your right hand. Is that the way you always play? Any reason why no picks? Thanks for the video.
@joedocmusic9 жыл бұрын
tubingstream Yes...I learned without fingerpicks, so I always play that way. Personally, I feel like I can control the tone better that way (I tried picks but didn't care for them) but it's simply a matter of what you get used to. Thanks for writing! joe
