In November 1984, I was at Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. On Friday nights, they had movies for those who graduated boot camp but were awaiting orders. Several not-yet-graduated recruits, including myself, snuck out to see the movie. It was, of course, "Sleepaway Camp." We were all so blown away by the ending. But we had to quickly sneak back to the barracks. We couldn't talk about what we had seen, for fear of getting caught. We all had to wait until graduation on December 7th. The thrill of getting away with seeing the movie, along with the amazing ending, and not being able to talk about it, made the experience even greater. I don't care for horror films, but this is one I will never forget.

So, some fun facts: The scene of Ricky standing in the doorway was always meant to be more obscured, but because the Blu-ray cleaned up some of the grime, this mistake is shown as clear as day. Also, Ricky's actor had to be the one to be the hand seen in all the killing scenes as the mother of the actress who played Angela didn't want her involved in those scenes. The mother also turned down an equally nutty idea of the actress of Angela wearing a... toy, that lead to them making the mask for the drunk college kid who played Angela's exposed body (yeah, that body double had to drink just to do that scene which given he had to wear a lil girl's face... What I adore about this movie is not only the cheesy acting or the obviously small budget, but the reactions to the ending scene. It also brings discussion about gender and trauma. I never really thought of Angela as trans, not willingly anyway. This all happened due to trauma and her crazy aunt forcing her to become something she isn't.
@MayaPosch2 ай бұрын
I see her situation closer to that of intersex children, who forcefully have a sex assigned at birth, all too often including 'normalization surgery'. As it turns out, that is a terrible idea, but it still persists as a regular practice today which is even recommended by so-called 'experts' (WPATH protocol, etc.). My own experiences in this regard are somewhat similar, and it absolutely messes you up. In the case of Angela with added trauma, not just the 'nobody knew and doctors didn't care' kind of trauma that comes standard with being intersex.

Anyone else feel sorry for poor Peter? All the trauma of: 1- Parents' divorce 2- Dad coming out of the closet 3- Watching Dad and little sister get run over by a boat 4- Being raised by a delusional aunt as the dead sister because she already has a son 5- Bullied by everyone else in summer camp 6- Hit on by your cousin's best friend No wonder they snapped.

Another Fun Fact: Felissa Rose was only thirteen at the time, which is unusual for a feature film. Studios usually cast actors 18 and over who look younger because of restrictions on using actors under 18 for extended-hour shoots. Also, at 13, she was too young to see her own movie in theaters.

trivia for you: in the scene right before the big reveal, when Angela is with Paul's body humming to herself, you can actually see the male stand in changing in the background for just a second. he's pretty much a blur but that's him. also I read the guy only agreed to do it after downing a whole bunch of courage whiskey. I can't remember his name, some set member.

If you think about it, if Sleepaway Camp's intention was to be the scariest children's horror film of all time, then it should rightfully deserve that credit. A film so borderline bizarre and macabre, this probably reignited David Lynch's interest back into the mystery/suspense that revolutionized his hollywood career with Blue Velvet (1986). I'm sure he had seen the film secondhand. Like many of us waltzing in your local video store back in the days, the VHS horror cover arts often left a terrifying expression of fright and despair; coming from the golden age of realistic horror violence that was forbidden for younger audiences. Friday the 13 (1980) and Sleepaway Camp were one of those for me since it echoed the novelized arts of the 1980s. Sleepaway Camp's effectiveness in the agony of pain is what sells the weight of these kills, also. The ending is not only a shocking one due to its dubious reveal of the killer, it also felt personal from the killer's point of view like K., The Psychopath from Angst (1983) where his pleasure comes with the fixation of having spectators be shocked by his kills. In all, throughout television syndication, never was broadcast outside cable television so it was shelved for decades until near the end of the 2000s where its ending sparked horror enthusiasts into bringing the film which is now in cult status. Yikes....that ending. 😕😬

Yes, Doug. The aunt from Sleepaway Camp is the ONLY person any of us would think of in conjunction with "hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?" No one thought of anyone else but the aunt when she said that line. The plot of this movie doesnt describe anyone else's development as a person. No one at all....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Been watching since 2009, and I gotta say - thanks Doug. Especially lately your jokes have gotten a real good punch. Just wanted to let you know that even after all these years, it's as fun to see your new videos like it was your review of Good Son. Hope you continue as long as you have the drive, and while I can't come to meet you face-to-face, know that you inspired at least one person who went on to make something "main stream" - for whatever that is worth now. Keep on rocking!
