It was especially cool that he brought that up during an Indigo reaction since a lot of the concept behind this album as well as the promotions and the album artwork was based around mixed media art. Even the photobook was full of art RM helped create himself and he did a promo where he had indigo ink on his body and where he did a mini art gallery where each song was represented by an art piece. And of course when he performed some of the songs in a museum. It's fitting.

RM was so inspired to write RPWP after Indigo that he actually changed BTS' whole timeline and pushed back his military service by like a year. I think that Indigo is very confessional. It feels like reading his journal. It's almost voyeuristic, especially on songs like Lonely. RPWP is more artistic for the sake of experimenting and being adventurous. So in a way, he literally did what he said in Yun. He was a human before he did some art.
@404gram4 ай бұрын
it's the opposite - every album he ever made was confessional, but between the two - indigo is the curated art exhibition he carefully assembled over years by RM of BTS while RPWP is raw & unfiltered series of sketches by Kim Namjoon, that he worked on day & night just to give those feelings of his a shape in the world. the difference is especially obvious when you see how he talks about indigo in RM 'Indigo' Album Magazine Film vs how he talks about RPWP in MMM(Mini & Moni Music) - RM. he literally said indigo was him holding back his thoughts while rpwp is his more liberated thoughts album.
@BrilliantHuman4 ай бұрын
@@404gram Agreed, I mean reading voyeuristic and my 1st thoughts went to Nuts and Out of Love straight away. But even then voyeuristic doesn't feel like any way I would describe it...more like confessional. We've been invited it, we're not looking uninvited or without consent.
@marissamcwhiter93814 ай бұрын
@@404gram he said that indigo is like his diaries in his twenties and he was exploring different genre. But during the Festa dinner he also admitted that he needed to find himself. I believe rpwp is that journey...after releasing indigo he was encouraged by san yawn to continue exploring instead of going to the military and so we got rpwp..a more raw version of his inner self at 30...after all that uncertainty and difficulty of the past 10 years as BTS leader ...he can truly express himself without worrying about how it will affect the group!

US music industry is stupid, you have to do the mind numbing press tours and 15 min set at iheart/jingle ball and maybe they'll see if they can work some spins into the daily radio rotation. They're used to acts playing the game bc that used to be the only way to gain an audience. The English singles ended up working out but I really hated that they would be playing the US radio game and realizing it has nothing to do with artistic merit but is all money and favors...and they didn't need to do it, they were already the biggest act in the world.
@eileencritchley46304 ай бұрын
Also they won't pay for play when it come's to USA Radio all the songs the USA population hears on their Radio stations is payed for illegally by the Music Label.
@glossaria24 ай бұрын
And as if songs not in English can't succeed in the US (hello, Despacito). 🙄 I get it, Americans (and I am one) see English as the lingua franca-- we don't see it as weird for other countries to consume things in English because to us it's the language EVERYONE "should" know anyway. (Don't @ me, there's a high degree of sarcasm in that last line). What the industry fails to acknowledge is that a) music is its own language, (one that BTS speaks very, very well) and b) listeners have a brain. If they REALLY like something, they can LOOK UP the lyrics. The "not picking up on radio" is another story, though. Radio remains rife with payola, which Big Hit will not engage in. The US music industry is happy to use them when they know their name will get more eyeballs on their event, but actually let them succeed without getting a kickback from their success? Nah.

Exactly. I'm remember how much army did to try to get radio stations to play their music & BTS did a lot too tons of interviews, army would send gifts thanking dj's etc for having them on their show. We sadly learned the hard way how radio actually works, BTS were trying to figure it out too. It took us a lot of hard work & disappointments to find out yes there's an advantage to songs that are English but that's not even it the real issue comes down to money period. If your artists isn't gonna sign an American label who gets a large percentage from you & you're not gonna pay a fee for radio (I can't remember what they call it but it's a loophole to get around being called payola but that's what it is) then we're not gonna play it or when we do it's in the wee hours in the morning 1 or 2 times. Dynamite got promoted better because some of the western names attached to that song but it still got no where near not even close to the spins western artists get. People think but I heard it at the store Walmart, Target , etc but those "radios" aren't spins counted toward the charts. Billboard & radio (and now streaming services too) has a nice relationship they don't want people messing with their money. We've got new fans coming in that weren't here during those times to live thru it that are now getting a crash course on it all or being swept up in false information spread on twitter.

CAUTION!!! A long post ahead, but dedicated to Varnell, our dear denying but hell yeah ARMY.... And about media, well, you know, media simply doesn't want to recognize BTS and want to kinda cage them K-Pop which is upsetting cus they do soooooooo many genres but that's media play that BTS and ARMY usually, mostly have to fight. Okay, to start off, Indigo is really nature-like as Varnell said, or better for his denial ARMY behavior, namjoon-ing. And Varnell, let me tell you, this album has a mix of genres, said by RM himself. He wished to experiment with a lot many genres and so he..did....😁Let's talk about the tracks 1. Yun [with Erykah Badu] - Backstory, RM was hella nervous to give this song to Erykah, so much so that he wrote a whole essay for her to explain the song. And let me tell you something about the title of the song which pretty much relates to the album as well - Yun Hyong-keun was a prominent Korean artist and one of favs of RM [he has many pieces of his art at his home as well]. He is known smearing effects of burnt umber and ultramarine blue paints on raw canvas or linen, which reveals a Korean sensibility of reflection and meditation. And that's inspires his album name 'Indigo' and his tribute to him with the name 'Yun'. If you look at the album cover, the art at the back is also one of his known paintings and one of RM's collection. [Your guy, is a complex yet simple artist, IYKYK]. The voice you heard at the start and end was Mr. Yun and the line 'True beauty is true sadness' said by him. So that's about first track. Fun fact, that painting is one of his last paintings before he finally found his signature style as I said above. So, in a way, Joon wanted to let people know he might not have found his signature style yet, but has evolved since mono [you'd know this ref when Sleep plays mono for you]. 2. Still Life [with Anderson Paak] - I understand you Varnell for that one extra verse, but that's how it simply went but for a word, Paak and BTS are actually good friends... It's just how the song went. As for the song, I will you a ref that RM himself said in his album interview, ''An artist painted a flower 100 years ago, that flower has already withered a long time ago, but in that painting it is still alive.'' Basically, giving a living object an eternal life. He as RM of BTS is in pedestal of still life gallery, who is being watched and needs to be aware. But he doesn't wanna stop himself from growing or evolving. ''A still life that doesn't stop.'' words by him to explain the song. It actually is a complex topic mixed with upbeat music [a very common thing BTS and RM often does]. If you watch the M/V, you'd realise more about it. 3. All day [with Tablo] - Tablo and Epik High in general goes a long way back for BTS, in general. Life sucks but let's chin up - RM said about this song. He wanted to create something of his own and wanted to get an persuasive voice for it, hence Tablo. He said yes to collaborate with RM without even listening to the song 😂. Kinda a social upbeat song as said. Another trivia - They gave a shout-out to each other. RM at the end says - ''We know we fly all day'' ref to one of Epik High's song ''Fly''. And tablo at the end of his verse, with megaphone effect [I hope I'm right] said, ''We got dynamite in our DNA'' ref to Dynamite and DNA, two of many hit songs of BTS. RM said for tracks 1-3, he wanted to first create an impression with Erykah Badu, set the mood with Paak and then a tonal set of meaning 'whatever it is , we'll see' with Tablo. He said that he wanted to make people believe that Oh he is doing what he is good at. But then comes the dynamic curve and the 4th song enters, a soft folk vocal song. 4. Forg_tful [with Kim Sawol] - This track came to RM probably the first, before the album even came up to the planning stage. And he wanted Sawol-ssi to be a part of it. [This album has been worked upon for 4-6 years]. RM says this is a complete folk song. Kim Sawol is well known for folk music. John Eun, one of writers, co-prod of this song, also one of RM's closest friend, said he asked Sawol-ssi to sing the demo and after checking the key, she sung that demo and that became the song itself. This was in 2019, when RM was 26, and he couldn't simply re-record that vibe 3 years later when the album was released when he was 29. That organic feel he felt the first time, he said, he couldn't re-create that no matter what and simply put to that. There even is a ref to his age in the song where it is said about 26 but the song itself came out when he was 29. Also, the last part of na na na naa naa... YK that fades out.. You can hear some rustle of clothes and winds which according to John was cus he secretly recorded it outside as they were walking with a portable condenser mic. Also, the song was made cus RM has been told of how he is forgetful of many things. And that missing 'e' is an embodiment of that forgetfulness. Also, how we still call the song ''forgetful'' even though it misses the sounding 'e'. That's Brain RM Varnell... This song also depicts a certain longing for certain things which are not always flashy and larger than life but something you experience with nature. 5. Closer [with Paul Blanco, Mahalia] - The prod of this song, duo HONNE, has worked with RM before as well [once you hear mono]. They sent him this beat with Mahalia's voice and he simply loved it. Paul Blanco is one of RM's fav Korean R&B vocalist. And he actually got him on the song with a DM😁. This music acc to RM is, urban-style lounge music. The theme - ohhhh... Basically, we get a moment where we wish to get closer, more specific in relations, but know that love might not be possible or simply we can't be together. Hence the last line, ''Stay where you are'' and Mahalia line as well, ''If I could be under your skin closer than we've ever been'', shows a desperation but reality check if love is not what it is for us, let's just stay where we are. When the ACT II comes, I might drop a long essay again. Till then, I hope this helped. And thank you Sleep, thank you for doing what you do. And Varnell, ARMY loves you. And we know you're soon a part of us. Borahae 💜

One thing I really love about Namjoon as an artist that truly differentiates him from the other Rap Line (they each have their own forte) is his Artistic Versatility. You can trust him to push boundaries and experiment with the fusion of genres and creative minds. Indigo is a masterpiece that's very difficult to pull off cause how the hell did he incorporate different artists in each track, inviting them into this speaker stage he set up and weaving them all into his fresh-from-heart tapestry? All that to archive the story and thoughts of his twenties. Mad genius artist he is!

Maybe someone already mentioned this but..Varnell, J Cole wasn't necessarily supposed to have 32 on "On The Street" with JHope. Hobi had a whole other verse already written for himself. J Cole sent his bars in but it was expected JHope would take what he felt fit the track. However, Hobi was so in awe of working with his #1 muse (his words) and he literally couldn't believe J Cole sent him 32. He felt it would be disrespectful to cut any and he has a different version of the song without J Cole that has Jhope's original second verse & he put it on his album he released the next year. Namjoon on the other hand had already been working for years with people he'd looked up to for so long and was a little more comfortable doing exactly what he envisioned for the track. Anderson would have 200% done another verse or 2 or whatever he was asked to contribute because he adores and respects all of BTS members so much he bragged he was ARMY way before he even met any of them. You might already know but Anderson is of both African American and Korean heritage & his (recently ex-)wife is Korean so may have helped organically click in a way(?) BTS were huge fans of his, but especially Silk Sonic at the time they first met. SUGA even visited Anderson in the US on his own, when trying to find inner answers and inspiration while making his project DDAY. They consider him a good friend. You're absolutely correct about "they" have been hiding BTS' from the algorithms for years. Btw, Wale & RM worked on a second song but it got cut short from busy schedules and they never finished. Wale still every now and again shouts out RM to call him anytime & he'd love to do more. Members always pick great collaborators for solo work, imo. OT7 BTS collabs are hit or miss, imo. They collabed with Nicki Minaj, for example, and it just felt like it was an after thought and she was stuck in an alternate version of one of their hits..just for sake if being there. My opinion, but many share it. I think it was maybe because they didn't expect to get her (?) just conjecture on my part but collabing with huge Western artists at that point wasn't a normality yet. I like her verse alright and she was glad to do it, even was her suggestion to add Korean translations of her English bars into the artistic editing of her bit in the MV. She was very respectful. Anyways, rambling and probably won't see this anyways😂

Tablo from Epik High was just as hype for so many of us as Paak or Erykah (or more so). Just keep that in mind. They have a massive following over a long career and still going! Just cause you dont know them doesnt mean its a mistake to structure his album like this. There are so many korean artists featured and given their roses on Indigo so I think the entire album is a treat. Definitely checkout some Epik High some day. BTS is my #1 but they are my #2. Just sayin ;]

Can you imagine them going to the Epik High Concert next month in LA? If they did I would give them one of their lightsticks knowing they would have fun jumping around with Tablo, Mithra, & Tukutz (I bought so many of them for all my vehicles, family, & every Concert that doesn't have a lightstick)
@noelmontrey79724 ай бұрын
I think that the album was structured the way it was because it was like a chronological narrative, like a diary, of his 20s. And yes, I agree that the Korean artists featured are also huge in Korea. Looking at it through a Korean lens, I'm guessing it makes sense to structure the album the way it is.

The term “kpop” actually more refers to the industry than any specific musical genre, so basically any artist in Korea that is associated with the idol industry (or even when they’re not at all) gets put under the kpop label, and once you’re there you’re pretty much stuck. Interestingly though, RM has said that if he is going to be labelled as kpop then he will embrace it because he refuses to be ashamed of where he comes from. BTS may be global artists now, but the international media will always downplay their success and use pigeonholing to keep them from the recognition they deserve, not just because of where they’re from, but also because BTS did not cheat their way to the top. They didn’t need industry support, and for that the industry sees them as a threat to their control of who gets to win and who doesn’t.
@SleepDeez4 ай бұрын
I’m very curious to how it works with the algorithm for discovery. I consider RM to be in the class of emcees I enjoy.. Kendrick, J Cole, Wale, but the algorithm would never drop one of his solo singles into my stratosphere. That metadata part needs to be figured out bc more people should be able to discover his songs organically. Someone out there should be like, “Whoa this song I saved to my playlist is by one of the guys from BTS?! I had no clue!”
@rkivelover4 ай бұрын
@@SleepDeez exactly, and luckily ARMYs are starting to make some of that happen just through requesting music reactors/content creators to give BTS a go, but in reality despite their global success it is very difficult for people to just stumble upon them, I guess partly because kpop is a very polarising topic.
@jylbts3 ай бұрын
@@SleepDeez On youtube the algorithm is heavily english biased, and they will not show you non-english content unless you go searching for it. Except occasionally on the trending lists, which is part of why army works so hard to make sure both the teaser and the songs hit the trending lists, because that's one of the few times that the algorithm actually serves up non-english content to primarily english language viewers. There's a British channel called "Korean Englishman" and they actually fought with youtube to make them stop suppressing non-english comments on their channel, because even though they are based in England their primary viewership is based in Korea, but youtube kept putting all of the english language comments first, then uses the alphabet but not english language comments, and then the asian language comments which was hampering their ability to interact with the majority of their viewers.

"Something's going on where they are just not letting people see this." 100% the RM/Wale collab I believe came out in 2017. Y'all are in the industry and y'all know the amt of BS that goes on behind the scenes just for American/Western artists. Now add language/looks/culture/ into the mix on top of a slew of other preconceived issues and that is just the tip of the iceberg for our guys to get the recognition/air time/radio play they rightly deserve. They are all so freakin' talented. I know Sleep is gradually letting you see this as to not overwhelm you LOL He KNOWS. The problem is that they are stuck in “Kpop” category even when their songs are NOT Kpop. Like Indigo, RPWP or even their old mixtapes - this stops a lot of people that actually like the gender from knowing them and listening to it. Add to this that Koop still brings a lot of prejudice, and BTS even more so - they still call army a bunch of 12 year olds, so it’s hard. We try our best to change this and give them more visibility, but most of the times it’s hard to break the bubble - specially for the RapLine

Varnell hit the nail on the head. RM is so genre-bending but the one thing that unites his music and makes it his own brand is that it SOUNDS OUTDOORSY. He loves nature and is consistently inspired by it, and the artist Yun Hyong-keun (who was a big inspiration for the album and his art his featured in the cover, as well as his voice and general message being used in Track 1) only painted based on nature - plus the colour indigo is a completely natural dye, it’s the most natural colour. This album, more than any of his works, feels like a reflection on his life so far while strolling in the park. It’s so him.

Like the popular music scene in Korea had never had anything like Epik High before, period. They are the godfathers of Korean hip hop, and were huge inspirations to both RM and Yoongi pursuing music, so his feature on this album is a huge deal. Yoongi also produced a song for Epik's High "Sleepless In" album.
