Depends If the old car has a modern transmission it will stomp, as they aren’t as heavy as you think, and they have a lot of torque and power. A 1969 Dodge Super Bee with a 3 speed automatic or 4 speed manual is only 1.3 seconds behind a C7 Corvette ZO6 in the quarter mile while being down 260 HP AND 5 LESS FORWARD GEARS STOCK FOR STOCK. Stick a 5/6 speed manual in one and the ZO6 will have a major problem.

Yes sir. I'm a Mopar guy and my favorite cars of that era were the 1962-65 Max Wedge cars and the 1966-67 426 Hemi Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite and Dodge Coronet. They all looked like grandma's car but we're absolute terrors at the drag strip, especially the Max Wedge cars

Back in the day, my uncle bought a brand new Blue 67 Hemi Plymouth Belvedere what a powerful car that was. He told my father he couldn't believe the power that car had, but the gas mileage sucked big time, he drove it to our house right after he bought it from Sudbury Ontario to Windsor Ontario 500 miles in 6 1/2 hours. lol

Gotta love sleepers ! Around 40 years ago I swapped a massaged L79 327 into the back seat of a `66 Corvair. A 2600 lb. car with around 400 HP is a fun ride, indeed. Many 396 Chevelles, Road Runners, Goats, Boss Mustangs, etc. were humbled by "a lowly Corvair" :-)

I remember reading about them. I wonder if they were meant for agencies like the FBI? I recall reading an article about the FBI's few 1986/87 Buick Regal Turbos (maybe only '87?) and how they set up a dummy finance corporation to register them if someone bothered to trace the license plate (DMVs made it easy to trace until that young actress was killed by a stalker). Then again, it seemed the big 3 were making factory sleepers. There is a video about the one documented known '67 Ford station wagon with a 427 and 4-speed that had to be signed off by top Ford brass as apparently and according to that video all odd builds wanting a 4-speed had to be signed off. Someone above mentioned a '67 Caprice with a 427 and 4-speed. That all being said, an original Hemi 4-door would be like the proverbial halo car as evidenced by the street Hemi's legend and mystique.

My ultimate sleeper is a '66 Chevy Biscayne wagon with a big block. In the late 70's/early 80's made a ton of money with it on the street. I could go on all night with stories about that car. Fortunately I kept it and today it has an easy life mostly in storage.

The 1969 Olds F-85 W31 post coupes was one of the ultimate sleepers. They only made 212 of them and I was lucky enough to own one. It was equipped with the legendary high performance ram air 350 small block putting out 325 hp mated to a muncie 4 speed with a hurst shifter and 4:33 rear end. It's black hood stripes, and black W31 badges on the front fenders against it's dark green paint and F78 14 black wall tires made it the most unassuming muscle car. It routinely surprised 340 Dart Swingers and 396 Chevelle's by beating them on the street.

These are like the 67 Chrysler 300 my dad had. He loved to tell the story about cruising between Winnipeg and Portage Manitoba when some tuner car would blow his doors off and think it was all good except dad would stomp on the pedal and open the 4 barrels on the 440 in the engine compartment and wipe the smile off the other guys face as that big old land yacht went sailing by and just keep on going. There was no badging anywhere to let anybody know what was under the hood.

@ Dale Sands, In 1975 my mom had a "67" "300" 440 4 Barrel auto trans. I was 17 in my senior yr. I used to drive it to school now and then, had a lot of guys with their mustangs, camaros, torino gt"s, etc, etc. I would blow them away in any race over a 1/4 mile,(most i could beat in the 1/4)(on the highway, none of them had a chance) it was a big boat, but was quite the muscle machine. On graduation night(i had told my friends i was going to leave something to remember me by) The walk in front of the school was approx 300 ft long, i totally burnt the tread off the new tires my dad had just put on the car( my friends thought it was, "FAR OUT MAN")(my dad on the other hand, well lets just say, i learned how much tires cost.... Wish i had that car now.

Yes,Chrysler,Dodge,Plymouth fullsize cars until 1971 had POWER,they were fullsize muscle cars...I owned them all 383 4bbl,440 4bbl and 440 TNT ..C bodies had 2 different 440's one was base and the other with the hotter cam/heads/intake/carb it was Chrysler's Magnum/Super Comando version. I even owned a 4 door 1968 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 4bbl non high performance 2.76 axle ,single exhaust (super quiet couldnt hear it run,new cars are much louder yes a new 4 cyl Camry idles louder) and I blew the doors clean off of my buddies 1989 Mustang GT with off road exhaust/tune and another's New at the time 1992 Camaro 1LE ...I even couldnt get traction,the car spun for ever,you had to not floor it,then lean into the gas/on/off/on/off until it hooked.. I own a late model used car dealer and got a clean ,mint condition Chrysler,so I drove it for awhile..It had 2.76 axle ratio made for highway,but off the line I blew everything away...It was a low 5 second 0-60 car even with 2.76 gears ! All stock and original.. I also own a 68 300 2 door with a 440 TNT and it runs side by side with my 2010 300 SRT8 6.1 Hemi(sold the 2010 a couple years back to get my Hellcat Challenger) !!! Super fast ! I also bought and still have my 68 Charger RT I bought in 1972 at 16..It ran 12.60's all stock just with wide 275 tires when they came out in 1976 ,also had traction bars,still spun alot but they were solid 12 second cars with 3.23 gears and automatic,bone stock carb ,engine,exhaust all stock as new !! It ran 13.70's with stock white wall 205 75 serires 14 inch with magnum 500's !! So that tell you right there all old cars times recorded were wrong as they ahd zero traction !

Oilsmoke Jones I'm a Mopar guy, but I agree with you oh, because I knew somebody that had one of those Chevy 2s with the engine option you mention. And also there are other sleepers... I think they need to do a little more comprehensive study on this subject LOL. I owned a late 60s Buick Centura with the 428 high output. And then of course there are the Buick Riviera's with the 455. And I have seen production figures of the Chrysler VIP cars that were built with the 426 Hemi in them. Another friend had a 65 Chevrolet that came with the 396 that I thought was pretty amazing. Definitely do not think that Ford had the ultimate sleeper although this video was pretty fun to watch

Got you beat there. I have a 2017 Camaro SS with dual-mode exhaust. I usually run it in Track mode (straight pipes full open), but, if I'm in the mood I can set it to be controlled by the master mode switch. When I see a mark at a light, I click down into Snow-Ice mode, which invokes Stealth mode on the exhaust. I give a couple of wimpy revs, then 1 click into Track mode and 2 clicks on TCL, and it's ready to ...er... surprise... My car is blue with blue hood vents and blue "SS" logos (it helps)

Yeah right!! I had a 1974 Oldsmobile Omega (which looked like a beat up Nova) and college kids would pull up on me in brand new IROC Z28 Camaros (this was in 1983) thinking my car was some pile of junk!! Little did anybody realize that, that rumbling exhaust note from the pipes was coming NOT FROM A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY but an Oldsmobile 350 Rocket Motor that car actually CAME WITH!! And was even topped with a Rochester Four Barrel to boot!! I SHOULD HAVE installed ladder bars on it, because when it launched the whole rear end of the car would sink (as I twisted the rear springs and compressed the air shocks) but "spooling up" took just a split second as the thing grabbed traction immediately and would "launch" like a rocket it was!! Sure many a Camaro got mere INCHES ahead of me off the line, but not even 20 feet later I was blasting by them like a spaceship on rails, and all they saw was tail lights of my little Oldsmobile!! I had a few guys follow me and pull me over to ask "What the hell do you have in that thing?" and when I would open the hood and show them my "handy work" they just rolled their eyes not believing what they saw lurking there!! And sure I got all kinds of questions then too!! Like you said "Judge your mark by the sound not the looks" and my Omega was never a "pretty car"!! Bondo on the fenders, the trunk lid and hood in primer, a rought spray painted black stripe down each side....I never meant it to "look pretty" I just wanted it to do what it did....launch hard and leave Camaros in its wake!!! And the real kicker was I bought it from a guy who was selling it for his elderly Aunt!! And it came with the 350 Rocket and Four Barrel right off the show room floor originally!!!!

I had one and her name was Blue as on the license plate but it had only one four barrel with the 440. A Fury 1 that was fully loaded with a/c, power disc brakes etc. It would still tromp on a lot of cars that would think it was just another 4 door company car with a big whip antenna on it. But if they would have looked at the rear of the car and saw the 2 1/2" dual exhaust and listened to it just a little they may have thought twice about biting off more than they could chew. That 727 with posi traction rear end really turned the tires.

Plymouth never made a 440 6bbl Fury in 1970. But you could get a six barrel intake manifold and build your own 440+6 Fury. That would be a really cool full size muscle car, like the 409 and 427 full size Chevys and the 406 and R-Code 427 Ford Galaxies

I wish someone would get the rights and revive them, at least as a 'kit' car, but with a modern suspension. By kit, I mean manufactured like what Superformance does with their replica Cobras, continuation GT40s, and '67 Corvette continuation. They sell them as rolling chassis, and while there are a few authorized Cobras out there, the GT40 is licensed and used as an actual continuation car, as well as their 'Vette (continuation of a racing car, not necessarily a rank and file street 'Vette). If they, or anyone else, obtained the rights, they could offer an authorized continuation of the Avanti. There have been a few revivals of the Avanti, but they have come and gone. I recall seeing a couple of the mid-80s ones based on the Caprice chassis, and I believe in the early 2000s based on the Camaro/Firebird chassis. But how cool would it be to have a modern interpretation, once again? A modern chassis with sport suspension, sport interior, and a modern engine; but keep it lightweight since 'kit' cars don't need all the modern BS safety factors, and voila! A new Avanti!!

In 1962 I worked for Seyler Motor co in Reading Pa. The owners son ordered a 1962 Plymouth 4dr sedan with the 413 engine 2x4s auto ,headers with cutouts. It was all blue with small hubcaps and black wall tires. We used to go into town and have a ball racing unsuspected muscle cars. RT

Back in 1986 one Saturday night I was at a stop-light in my orange 70' 383 Cuda when a guy pulls up next to me in some plain looking new car and motions that he wants to race, Ok the light turns green and I chuckle as I'm over a car length ahead by the time I cleared the intersection. well I was about to let off the gas around 40-mph when I heard a whistling noise and tires skipping traction as the guy pulls by me in what turns out to be a new Buick Regal T-Type.

What year did the Buick Grand National come out?There were only 7,896 Turbo Regals produced in 1986. In 1987, when Turbo Regals reached their peak in popularity, a total of 27,590 Turbo Regals were produced through December, with those models produced between September and December of that year window stickered as "1987½ Buick Grand National" vehicles.

Regal T type was the low trim version. Grand National was basically the same car powertrain wise but had more options and only came black where T-type cars came other colors (makes them wicked sleepers). GNX was a Grand National that was sent to McLaren I believe to be worked over. They had suspension modified, more power, different wheels, vents at the back of the front fenders and a few other bits. They were also black exterior color only and quite rare due to the price and limited production run. The turbo Grand National was produced from 1984-1987. 84-85 cars were hot air turbo, 86-87 were intercooled.

I've always preffered " sleepers" to flashy cars. It's why my street racing days in high school was so profitable! I had a '73 Chevy Kingswood estate wagon, complete with woodgrain decals down both sides. 400 small block, turbo 400 trans, mild cam, headers. I did however, put magnesium slot mags, with Mickey Thimpson street 50s on the rear! It just made it easier to get people to race me!

I remember my dad driving up in his new '64 Chrysler 300K. It was a beautiful midnight green. He said "lets go for a ride before your mother sees it and makes me take it back". It was a lux looking car but was still a sleeper since under the hood was a cross-ram dual 4bbl. 413 wedge engine. He got to keep it of course and even drove it around Atlanta International Raceway a few laps. The guys at the track said " Bill keep it over 90mph to stay up on the high-bank". I shudder to think of that heavy car on bias-ply street tires flying around a high bank speedway. Hey, I'd have done it and loved every minute of it.

I graduated high school in 1987 in the L.A. area. One of my classmates came from a huge Pontiac family; the father was a doctor, yet drove around in one of his classic Pontiacs as opposed to the ubiquitous professional car of the day, a Mercedes Benz. One of the car in their collection was a station wagon. Cannot recall the exact 60s year or name (assuming Bonneville), but it was a 421 tri-power with 4-speed. My friend brought that one to school a few times, but the 'cool' car was his father's '77 TA with a 400/4-speed (an out of state car as California did not allow the 400 engine but rather the 403 Olds) and straight pipes and glass packs. Reportedly, its exhaust notes was dubbed in for one of the later Smokey and the Bandits movies.

What caught my eye was the '66 Impala SS. Back in the early '80's, my brother in law picked up a '66 Impala SS that since the mid '70's was being used as a farm car in upstate NY. The car was identical to the one in this video. The interior was like new and the exterior was in need of a wax job. My brother in law has since passed away and the car is long gone but the memories live on. Until this video, I've yet to see another in that wonderful shade of blue.

I know a perfect example of a sleeper...a friend of mine had an old 1969 coupe mustang...puke green with steel rims with baby moons hubcaps...came brand new with a 351-w 4-berral & top loader 4-speed with 3:50 pos traction rear end!...came like that from factory...not even a hoodscoop...flat hood!...a man came up to his shop one day & started talking shit about it & said that peace of crap wont get out of its own way!....the man that owned the car said come ride with me to the store.....he pulled out the driveway & nailed it...when he got 120mph in 3 gear & haven't even banged 4th gear yet...the guy said....(holely shit get me the hell outta this dam thing!)....long story short! I bet you that man didn't ever talk shit about that car ever again.

Great collection.. brings back memories.. A friend in high school had a 1967 Buick wildcat four door green sedan with a 430ci and an automatic trans... That was a very sleeper-like car...The engine was the most violent in our group.. and we're talking 455s (my 70'442 and my buddies 73 Pont Grand Prix), and a 500(my buddies caddy coupe).... I mean, the Wildcat wouldnt go anywhere.. it just stayed in one place with one back tire spinning as much as you wanted it to.. and when it caught, 25 to 70 was an existential experience. Because of the lack of pos, and only one of the wheels pulling at a time in the back, the front end would lurch under full throttle in a lopsided, scarily twisted heave... heh, heh

No doubt about those wildcats being something special that no one would ever expect. My cousin in Oklahoma got one from the OG owner when we were in high school. Dad & I go back there to deer hunt and he wants to go out in his wildcat. I try talking him out of it since my dad would let me drive his new "California" addition lowered chevy dually which I figured it's the only one of it's kind in Oklahoma we'll for sure pick up chicks no problem. Well, he insured me we'd do alright with the ladies with the old wildcat.. True to his word found some chicks, got in a fight, and burned lots of rubber that night!! One of my favorite memories about being in a 4 door, pink colored Buick wildcat flying down old Route 66 and of coarse the two drunk okie chicks & myself "hanging out" in that huge ass back seat!

I had a 67 New Yorker that would qualify as a sleeper big time. From what I've read, the 67 440 engine...and ONLY the 67...had the preferred free flow heads. I always knew there was something special about that motor. I was out running pretty much everything I raced. A friend with a 427 Camero couldn't believe it. 14 inch tires too.

My friend's parents took a trip to Bahamas, and left him home with their new 1970 Buick Centurian. Had the same 455, might have been a bit lighter. We took the week off of HS, and took day trips all week. We ended up putting over 1500 miles on it, when he tells me he wasn't allowed to drive it. We filled it up with gas (premium was 22.9) and tried to look innocent. The car only had 1900 miles on it when they left - but we didn't know if his parents knew that...

My mom got a new car in 1967...an Olds Cutlass Supreme, a red 2-door with a black interior and a black vinyl top. Under the hood was a 330 cu. in. V8 sporting 10.2:1 compression, and pumping out 320 hp. Coupled with a 2-speed automatic, it would spin the right rear tire until you got tired of breathing the smoke. I loved that car.

The 66 Chevy Impala SS is a real beautiful car. But no power brakes? Or steering? I had a rag top 65 SS Impala with a 409, but sadly it also has a power glide automatic. But it also had pw/do, with factory a/c! With an am radio with two speakers! The car was white with a white top and red bucket seat interior! I bought the car in 74, with just 67,000 miles on it! But it did burn oil! I was in the U. S. Army at the time at Ft. Carson CO. where the Army had a program was complete auto shop with a dozen lifts and all the tools and machines to do anything you wanted, for FREE use and a discount program for parts! So my buddies and I installed a new GM 396, with a Turbo 400 transmission and 3:55 posi rear. That car was an awesome sleeper! That four door Ford at the end is something else! Later on, in the 80's I bought a 69 LeMans Wagon, that needed and engine, so I bought it for a song. We rebuild the suspension front and rear with HD springs, brakes and the front end. Plus put a 400 4 brl Firebird engine a turbo 400 tranny in it! I also acquired a complete GTO front clip and ended up with a real fine beach cruiser! That was also a sleeper!

Chrysler had over 400 hp in their 300's by then..They ran over 150 mph too !! Yes on skinny tires..that had zero traction..They were powerful cars,just test results are skewed because zero traction,its like testing new cars on ice and recording the 0-60 1/4 mile etc..

C body Mopars with either the 383 hp or the 440 hp (magnum,TNT,super commando) are quicker than most of these cars.. I ran low 13's with 205 75 bias ply tires back in 1979 with my 68 Chrysler 300 440 tNT,still have the car today along with my Charger RT I bought in 1972,bought the 300 in 1970.. My 68 300 bone stock I added 235 15 inch magnum 500's runs beside my 2010 300 SRT8 6.1 Hemi..So,yeah they are sleepers !

The Chevrolet Biscayne could also be a nice muscle car as well and ditto for post 1957 versions of the Bel Air as well, particularly when it became the low-end version of an Impala, Caprice, or Caprice Classic.

I love this. I wanted a cruiser, so my first car was a '66 Caprice with a 396-325 Turbo 400. The first time I ran it at the track, it ran 15.30's on 8.25 x 14 whitewall tires and beat my friend's '64 GTO. I started street racing it and won a lot of races with "Mom's car". It ran high 14's at an NHRA track and surprised a lot of Z28's. Sleepers!

Many yrs ago. I had totaled my 68 Camaro. Friends dad had 66 impala for sale. No biggie. I was looking at 70 nova ss. ( this was in late 70s early 80s. When us teenagers could buy muscle cars for nothing. Gas crunch and kids forced men sell cars ) I really liked the 66 so I bought it. For 2500 dollars. 396. 4spd bench seat. SS. man. Wish I had it now. Or my 70 442 my 67 396 chevelle. Lol. My gf now my wife of 35 yrs went into labor while we at street races. Went to hospital in 70 396 chevelle. On m/h racemaster slicks. Open headers. Huge cam. Tunnel ram 2 660 centersquiters. You should've seen the crowd at the entrance to emergency. We still laugh sometimes. My dad raced so it was just a thing we did back then. Lol. Comes full circle. Now I have nostalgia 69 fed. ( woody Gilmore design ) and the grand babies are my pit crew. Lol. But man I long for back then. 10 bucks get ya gas and some beer but you had to pitch in with friends to get the 10 bucks. Lol

I love sleepers because they can be reborn in a back yard garage. Some rev heads would remove the rear seat, door panels and even wheel hubs in order to lighten the car. I still have my first sleeper: 1967 Delta 88 with a modified 455 and beefed up suspension. Back in Canada in the 1980's I was laughed at for modifying a 4 door car. In California and here in Australia people ask for a closer look. I respect anyone who can modify an old car into something unique.

There's also the Plain Jane '65 Chevy Biscayne you could order with a 425hp 396 and 4 speed. I found one but it was advertised for $75K. Instead I found a '65 Biscayne which had good paint so I bought it. I installed a 550hp 454, Richmond 6 speed, Hotckis suspension, new interior and re-chromed the bumpers. I built my car for $20K.

From 73 to 75 I was a carryout at a Grocery and we had a customer with a 67 Caprice WAGON . It had the fake wood on the sides and a 427 under the hood with a 4 speed tranny, Guess you could order whatever you wanted back then.

I graduated high school in '87. One of my friend's family was a huge Pontiac family. He had older brothers with GTOs and other Pontiacs, not to mention my friend would come to school in his father's '77 TA with a 400/4-speed. The ultimate sleeper however, and similar to the Caprice, was the '6x Pontiac station wagon that my friend would roll up every so often in; 421 and 4-speed, that thing would haul! Funny thing is, the dad was a surgeon and this was in the L.A. area, at a time when everyone with cash seemed to be driving Mercedes Benzs or yuppies driving BMWs. His dad drove his old Pontiac muscle to work, including that station wagon.
