One detail that I experience and nobody talks about is the 'warm up time' For example I have two -15c bags, one weights 1kg (2lb) is high quality down, the other weighs over 3kg (6lb+) and is cheap synthetic. If both bags are at ambient temperature and you climb into them, you need to warm up all the trapped air AND the material of the bag. If you climb into 4kg of cold synthetic bag it takes a good amount of time to warm that up. So... A light weight down bag will get you to 'cozy' much quicker than a heavy synthetic bag with identical thermal properties. Dont assume that weight alone means more to carry, it does, but its also more 'plastic' to bring up to body temperature.

Nice work on the intro! Lots of good info here. Having a solid quiver of bags is a sign of a busy outdoors person. Well thought out investments.

Another option for super cold temperatures is to throw a quilt on top of your sleeping bag. Often a synthetic quilt is used so that the moisture will fall on it instead of the down sleeping bag. The reason not to layer sleeping bags inside each other is to avoid compressing the insulation.

I have a roomy 15 degree down bag and 30 degree down quilt. I'm thinking of combining them for winter camping in new england, total down fill weight comes to 30oz of 850 power.

Thanks for the insights. I would appreciate a video discussing your bivy sack sleeping system. I have spent a number of nights shivering nights using a liner/bivy/light weight pad.

Hello! Great review! I'm thinking of buying the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Alpine 30f/-1c sleeping bag since I can buy it cheap. I'm interested in this bag because of its weight but its comfort temperature seems fair to me. Would you use a thermolite liner mummy inside it if you get close to -5 degrees? Greetings and thanks!

i have a question, with what clothes do you sleep inside the bag? assuming the temperature is on par with the confort rating. thanks

I just sleep in the clothes I wear for the trip, if it's a little chilly with the comfort rating then put on a jacket and you'll be warmer in the bag.

Hello, first of all sorry if you explain on the video, but english is not my native so... Im lookikg to buy the phantom 0, but Im not sure because of the down. I've seen that a lot of bags use hydrophobic down like nikwax treatmen or similar. Do you think is neccesary to buy a bag with it? Or you'd never have problems with wet down with the phantom that doesnt have hydrophobic?

All that waterproof down stuff isn't really a selling point for me, if the environment is wet, then your down bag is going to wet out. You're almost always best with a synthetic bag in that case. I also don't really use a 0 degree bag unless it's cold enough that you'll only get snow- in that case a hydrophobic down bag will work great because snow is easier to deal with than water. A lot of subzero bags come with a lining on the outside of the bag which provides a lot better waterproofing treatment, of course that adds bulk and weight. In conclusion I don't think the nikwax treatment is really worth it, most of that stuff wears off in time anyway (like sometime within a couple of uses.)
