Our Gatlinburg shenanigans is over and it's time to fly back home to Chicago Aurora Airport. Jaime and I discuss the trip for you guys. Then she decides to crawl in the back and take a nap. While being lonely I discuss my thoughts on MOA's (Military Operations Area) and flights within.

I've seen them on the chart more frequently out that way but didn't realize they were active at our GA altitudes. In your case I'd go through than not fly! :) Around us it's easy to turn 20 left and add 2 min to your flight to go around them. Looking forward to our west coast swing so I can show the folks some of the differences.

I don't mean to suggest how you manage your site, but it strikes me that a lot of non-pilots (and some pilots) might not know how to manage displaced thresholds. In fact, I think this may be the first aviation video I've seen that demonstrated taking off from within one. Well done. This also leads to a question. I seem to have noticed a lot more displaced thresholds around the country than what I remember from when I was flying (stopped back in the '90s). What's up with that? In fact, I remember ARR 27 as not being displaced. Just checked my 1987 edition of the State of Illinois Airport Directory--no displace threshold at ARR. Of course, back then, there was no 15/33, either...

Is that really true? With all that engine monitoring going through sophisticated computers, there isn't a function that can tell you if your engines are out of sync?? You have to take your headphones off and listen? That seems like such an easy function to program into the engine monitor!

I took a trip down to Rantoul to the old air force base. They have a courtesy car to run into town to eat. Really interesting to see all the old buildings and to think about all the jets and military aircraft that has used the runways.
