Did Someone Try To Steal Our Cow?!

Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

I do not know about the neighbor that tagged your heifer but there are always people that work harder to be deceitful than if they worked honest. When I was young one of our neighbors was caught stealing cattle and went to prison for it. Little man looks to be growing fast, cute smile. I hope Damaris is doing well. Stay safe and healthy.

Back in 1973 there was a beef shortage or so they claimed, we caught rustlers a few times ! They even backed a semi up to our loading chute at 2 am! Truck radiator got shot up! Nowadays here in Arizona several have been caught stealing cattle! Stealing someone’s branded animal is strictly dealt with!

As you said ,its a natural process for all milk -fed offspring . Even humans have to wean the babies eventually off Mum or bottle. Several years ago brand inspectors in South Dakota called and I had a cow and a calf the southeast area of Ellsworth Air Force Base this guy got scared and let the brand inspectors know that we had we got our cow n calf back just tell me that my family used to run livestock@ Cement Ridge and I think several times because the cattle in the area I was told that they would go down to your probably your grandfather's their West Spearfish to get cattle the wouldn't stay with the rest of cattle in same pasture around Cement Ridge n Tinton Mine

What ever happened to right and wrong? I guess maybe things should go back to the ways in the 1800's. Rustlers were hung and left there hanging as an example. Worked for them and so maybe needs to be looked at again. If somebody went after our horses a warning shot will be heard. A friend with milking cows once fired a warning shot over the heads of deer hunters and Jane could have nailed them quite easily with that 30-06. She was mad as heck.
