Why Ranchers Brand Their Cattle!

-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

What’s really special is when your son starts crawling chasing you room to room, then the first time you hear dada, then they walk you can hold their hand, before you know it dad becomes a REAL life Superhero and kisses can make anything better. Watching your offspring grow is beyond incredible bit clears up real fast if you ever wondered what your purpose was in this world

Carson, great to see your grandpa today also Silas . Your dad is correct if there were only honest folks . Wouldn’t be no need to brand . That is also why locks are made . To keep the dishonest ones out . Angus needs some chores, some training on something simple. Them Heelers are meant to work . Show him what to work or he will start working and heeling you. Your ranch is in such a beautiful place. Here in Central Indiana we are in a flat area. Our area is called the “12 Mile Area”. Very flat. It is though it is beautiful when our corn and bean fields are swaying in the breeze. It seams that whether ever you farm or ranch it is the most beautiful area in Gods Land. 🙏

Carson, ear tattoos are also legit, from what I have been told by the brand police. Our cows are tattooed. Now, I do run registered cattle, so they are documented quite differently than just stock cattle.

It's been a long time since I helped with branding but watching this I can still recall the smell of singeing hair and hide. We drug calves to the fire and being one of the younger ones was always on the ground crew, but wouldn't trade it for anything. Thanks for taking the time to film this and get that Angus out for a long run before he wallows you to death (gotta love those heelers).

Hi Carson, really enjoyed the Drone footage of herding in the calves and the music was very fitting. Branding is one job I would have a really hard time doing as that hot branding iron pressed on the skin can't feel good. Hopefully cows don't feel as much pain as us humans would experience. Silas is growing fast and seems like a healthy and happy little guy.

Your analogy fits… bc I have two boys and they aren’t traumatized by being circumcised. So that makes sense to me. As long as it’s done when they are babies. But I also know cows do grow faster then us. But I understand why you have to do it. I didn’t realize that there were so many cow robbers. Great video! Question - on the branding, which I know ZERO about... I noticed they are "zapped" with the iron multiple times. I don't know if it's because of the design or what. Yup cattle rustling is still real! Up here in Canada a Rancher in Alberta just had over 25,000 $ worth of cows stolen, some of them were located one province over in Saskatchewan but some of them weren't recovered!
