Being raised on a working ranch on the island of Maui, I tip my hat to Duke and the Phillips family, it just reminds me of how I was taught about ranching and the humbling feeling that was instill by my elders of my family. Ranching is a tough business, I remember some years ago, where the drought was so critically bad, that cattle on my own family's ranch was literally dropping dead! There ain't to many truly dedicated cowboys/ranch-hands who's willing to work full-time on a working ranch, it's mostly family members, and maybe a few close friends that love this life. And there are the others, who just want to be the weekend warriors, and when Monday comes around their back at their 40 hr. work week doing another trade of work. You can't blame them, you have to have live it 24/7, 365 days, and love what the ranch life is all about, and knowing that it's never about the pay!

Proud feedlot (mostly cattle a few pigs) brat here. Respect the way you guys keep the traditional style of ranching alive. I do believe there is a place for both styles of livestock production in this world. Glad to see that there are still real cowboys out there.

We didn't always use cradles we often penned them in the branding yard then put them in race an pulled out onto the ground for branding and marking and anything else that needs doing since it was done in January we would also treat all pink eye and scours.

There is always a great feeling of reward and contentment to see what you were taught and learnt over there years passed on to the succeeding generations. It's is its own reward knowing that another generation is going to live to carry it on and pass it on.

The biggest difference is that many places are being bought up by companies especially tthe Chinese and it's a very bad thing land should only be owned by families who live on it and have the interest of the land at heart and are vested in its interest.

A rancher told me that one ranch of theirs was so remote it took a certain person to want to work there And don’t forget the low wages lol I want my own remote ranches to come and go to as needed that has me frequenting town and gets me back out in the near wilderness but with a house and some facilities to make working my livestock easier lol that’s a good cowboy way of living lol But if you’re too superstitious there’s too much Brahman blood in a herd and people won’t rope out calves to mark our brand and want to use calves chutes

I understand that branding is traditional, but surely chipping them makes much more sense. You can have information programmed into it up to the point of selling it, for any buyer. And the data would have the full history of the animal

Chips can move is probably the biggest problem for ranching. Other problems would be that there would have to be a standardized chip throughout the industry because not all chip readers can recognize every chip type. That's one of the biggest problems in the pet industry. Also, chips sit in the muscle which I imagine would cause problems for meat later on. Brands are also easier to recognize on sight without having to catch them and go get your chip reader, which can be dangerous depending on the animal. So if you have an animal that's not yours, you can get them to where they belong. I do think that they mentioned something about an ear chip (not tag) in a later episode?

Some people put electric earth's in but they fall off or break. A brand is always there, also someone could pop someone else's off an put one of theirs on

It aint "super hectic" having them in the pen using chutes. Thisnis some self righteous and fake B.S...how are they soo clean? Tables and chutes are amazing tools that allow ranchers to do the work of 20 wirh 5 or 6 people. A table worker, a leg holder, a few calve pushers and a vet or someone who doea yhe shotts. You dont need teams of ropers. You dont need horses. None of that f&*keration.

Messianic Hebrew ambassadorship neighbors and friends come help out and than you go help them at their branding. On really big ranches they hire cowboy crews that go out with a wagon. Their aren’t many corrals out where they are

Apparently you’ve not spent much time out here in the west. You invite people to brand the way you do here and your “help” is going to be high school kids from town and some drunk guy you met at the bar. Branding, for us, is as much about spending time with our friends and neighbors doing something we all enjoy as it is getting the work done.

Remmy Mills and your neighbors know the routine which makes it safer. Ranching communities always seem to be closer than most. Neighbors help Neighbors which is a beautiful thing. They watch out for each other. From what I've heard most ranchers don't have a lot of extra money to hire people unless they have a really big operation. They did say their partner with nature conservancy which would be funding a lot of this stuff obviously.
