Written after the suicide of his first wife Phyllis. The baby he references was his then one or two year old son who he was left to raise alone. Been a massive fan since I was 10. Seen Jackson over 100 times and my most prized possession is a picture of him and I at a benefit concert for Rawanda. Beautiful person and for my money the greatest lyricist of all time!

After hearing his music for many years, I am truly in a place in life where I can now feel the meaning in his words. I am hearing songs for the 1st time and I simply cannot get enough. The entire album made after that tragedy. One of the most profound groupings of music I have ever heard
@stargazer67537 ай бұрын
@@jamestohill8287 Yes , indeed , but the problem is people assume that all of the songs were written within these horrible circumstances, which is just not true. Only one song was written after the suicide and it was “Sleeps Dark and Silent Gate.” You can find it out with Google. It is all very sad. Some of the songs seem prescient , but there is no evidence of such. We have to take Jackson’s word.
@DeenDesperado5 ай бұрын
Yup. I actually read about it in an article in the Time magazine in the early 80's. They were kind of reviewing his latest album at the time, Lawyers In Love but also touched on the suicide subject that he wrote on one of his previous albums. Never heard the song before, got curious and went to get the particular album. I listened to Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate and the rest of The Pretender, and became a fan ever since.

I discovered this when I was 17. The songs of maturity and sorrow were beautiful. But they were abstract things that happened to "somebody else" at that age. Now, some 40+ years on, whether sadly, beautifully, or happily, the things Jackson Browne wrote about in those songs have all happened to me in one way or another.

Oh yeah, Julie Faqir : I read in Rolling Stone that LATE FOR THE SKY was one of the best LP's of 1974, so I bought it in January of '75 and it didn't leave my turntable - we had record players then - for a good 6 months. Nothing else played, because nothing else mattered. Fountain of Sorrow is the best song ever written or felt or lived. Fountain of Sorrow is as real and basic as the breath in your lungs or the humanity in your soul.

The best way to express something is to tell a story, like this, of a moment in time... this moment lasting six months... He does does lay it out there for us to grab and hold onto, like the loves we lose I suppose. He inspired us all to think poetically. I love it. Love man. It's so vital you want to just die than do without it, once you've found it.

Rainy, warm Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, NC. Stretched out on the bed with my bf at the time. He put on "Saturate Before Using". Right from the first note, I was more in love with the music that I could've ever been with him. I'm devoted enough to have seen JB in a hurricane. Stood ankle deep in rain in the VIP tent. We were all drenched through to the skin. One of the most memorable nights of my life.

I did not know why he wrote this song. If I could ask him one question it would be, "Do you realize how good a songwriter you are and how many lives you have touched?" I'm 65 now; been listening to his songs forever; have every one of his albums; took my three sons to see him in Albuquerque years ago - their first concert. I guess I'm a fan.
@stargazer67537 жыл бұрын
I know why he wrote this song.
@stargazer67536 жыл бұрын
He wrote this song as he was finishing up the album " the Pretender" It was the only song on the album that dealt directly with his wife's death. The lyrics , "And the only time I seem to cry, is when I see the kindness in my baby's eye" related to his baby boy and Jackson's feeling of desolation. Many of the other songs on the album appear to be related to her death, but they were all written before. An example would be " The Only Child". It starts out " Boy of mine" and then I start to cry. "I found my love too late" refers to coming home in the wee hours of the morning after working all night in the studio recording "The Pretender" only to find his wife had died and he was too late to save her. Scott Thurston's background singing refers to the song "Your Bright Baby Blues". Every word of this song is heartbreaking.

Discovered this album (this, Dewars, and a few other things) when I was 16 in the record collection of a woman twice my age. She hadn't had an easy life; she was both hard and vulnerable - bent but not broken. And a redhead. There were.... complications, lol. But I became and remain an instant fan of Jackson's music. As with so many others, it has helped me through some rough times - but also facilitated some really satisfying reflections which have now morphed into mellowed, bittersweet but pleasant memories.

The simple and basic words of " Oh, God, this is some shape I'm in " and it says all that you are in your frail, weak, mistaken and tragically mis-timed human life. Then, you hear, " The times when we were happy / Were the times we never tried " and it's all here and now and up close and personal and so very lucid and easy to understand. So you tear up, and your throat lumps, and your heart throbs with the intensity of the realization that you're special, and unique, and exceptional, only because you're like Everybody Else who's lucky enough to grow up and experience a Life with the fun, joy, challenge, excitement, regret and Loss of those times when you never tried. Thank you, JB.

Lately I've been drawn to Jackson Browne's songs and life story. I don't really know why. My dad loved his music when I was a child and often played his tapes in our car in the 70's. I had a difficult childhood and adolescence that has stayed with me well into middle age. I've been thinking about my past, reflecting, and the memories of listening to "Running On Empty" started echoing in my mind. I started researching Browne's life story and tragedies and felt such a rekindled connection to his music. "Shape of a Heart"is my favorite; so haunting and raw. His lyrics could have been my written about my childhood, even though they are about his beautiful 1st wife, Phyllis. I hope Mr. Browne has found peace all these years later. I'm sure he will be reunited with her in heaven and they will complete the shape of a heart together.
