I have 2 experiences involving sleep related scares: one is old, another is recent. The most recent one involved my first experience with sleep paralysis; I had an idea what it was, I relaxed, and then I could move again. Apparently, though, I wasn’t awake when this happened, and as I walked around thinking I’m awake, I see this giant 8 armed creature with some sort of insects face climb my apartment building. I woke up after seeing it. The second time was when I was about 4 years old. I had a super hyperactive imagination-my mother always said I could see what others couldn’t however-and my night terrors would persist into being awake. My most memorable one was I woke up, looked to my closet door, and saw a mass of human faces and arms reaching out and pleading for help. I screamed for my parents and they sat their comforting me as I continued to see the faces and arms. I still have no idea what I saw or how I managed to form something like that.

If you ever have curiosity about sleep paralysis and want to make yourself experience it (despite the fact that it can be very horrifying), the best thing is to fuck up for your sleep schedule for a bit - get very little sleep at night for a few nights here and there and regularly take naps at odd times of the day (naps around 5-8pm was what I used to do). Every time your in bed, keep practicing to pay attention to your body and try to keep your mind in the moment, focus on your breathing, pay attention to what your body is doing and don't let your mind drift too much. Keeping the lights while you're falling asleep helps too, if you are able to sleep with the lights on.

I've never had sleep paralysis, but one night when I was 14 or something I was sleeping on the couch in the living room. I awoke in the middle of the night in the darkness, and the bathroom door was slightly ajar. There was this very slender silhouette, like a clear cut into the void, much darker than the surrounding dark. It had a small head atop a long neck and these very long pointed fingers. It was tall, if it were standing up straight, I believe it would be taller than the ceiling. It was peering directly at me, hunched just below the threshold with its long fingers gripping the doorframe. I was terrified. And then it moved into the bathroom, but the way it moved was terrible. It didn't hunch under the doorframe. It slinked, I can't describe it, but I can imitate it. I immediately got up and called my dog and turned on the lamp. I couldn't get to sleep that night, but the next I slept with my arms around my dog.

I was fucked up listening to this and the descriptions of the sleep paralysis monsters scared the shit out of me. I sometimes have extremely realistic dreams where I'll wake up in my actual bed in my actual room, something scary will happen to me, and then I'll wake up for real. Sometimes the dream will loop several times. When I was a teenager I had one where I woke up into my perfectly dark room and stumbled out into the hall and towards my parent's room, not being able to see anything, with a weird sense of weight slowly increasing and making it hard to move. When I got to my parent's door it was locked, and I would feebly knock on the door and scream for them, but my voice was extremely weak. This repeated like 4 times, with me aware of each previous time, and in the last one I was pinching myself, crying, and begging to wake up. Then I woke up for real, and thank God I left my lamp on because it let me know immediately I was actually awake. None of the other ones were that bad, but I've had similar.

Two instances of me knowing its real. The time it did crawl in my mouth I was reaching for a rosary on my desk, it climbed in me. And when I woke up it was on the ground. Later when I had moved, and we had warmed up to each other, I wouldn't be scared when I would see it and could actually move (I'd normally just roll over and go back to sleep, or I'd tell it to fuck off cause I needed sleep) I was on my side looking at it, and it zoomed up to me and punched the bed in front of my face hard enough that it was audible and my head bounced up. It was so fucked. I used to travel between sc and nc every other weekend and objects I had packed or left would spontaneously be at the other location. Its hard being skeptic and facing so many different instances of these things.

When I was in the Army, we had sleep deprivation training. Worst fucking thing. After about hour 72, shit just starts happening and you see monsters and demons and ghosts and shit, all while trying to stay aware of your surrounding. My fireteam partner at one point got so scared that he wanted to run of the trench and hide in a bush.
