Darton Sleeves are the best. Been to their shop at Carlsbad, CA. This is guy is right about the cost. But its totally worth the peace of mind knowing the cylinders aren't going to crack no matter how much you beat the shit out of them.

sleeved vs. closed deck, pros/cons and or proper applications for each?

Umm with closed deck you will never have issues. Sleeves ? Installing iron sleeve in aluminium block is just asking for trouble, i had nothing but issues with blowing headgaskets and pushing coolant.

yeah if you have some one install sleeves properly and make sure they dont drop then they are fine ive had darton sleeves in my 2.5l sti for 2 years running 30 pound and never had an issue. and i have had people that have closed decks done to there engines and have and heaps of headgasket issues just your luck of the draw really both good methods. depends how much you wanna spend really.

I have never seen oem block holding 600whp, for the sleeves I'm sure Darton will hold 1000whp but make the sleeves stay in place without drop or movement without a better support it's very difficult for us, what are your trick?

Sleeved block is hands down better in every way as long as you get a quality install, It can't just be done by anyone hence why you can almost never find them and you're paying big $ for it. You get stronger block, better coolant flow, can push way more power safely and reliably. Closed deck blocks are a decent solution for lower HP builds but what the closed deck insert does is it strengthens the top of the cylinder from distorting, but it doesn't do anything for the rest of the cylinder. It also restricts coolant flow but it has also been proven that it still gets adequate cooling. The other issue with just a closed deck is that you still will crack the cylinder walls and when the walls are destroyed its a new block. If something wrong with sleeves you just re-sleeve the block, or bore over depending on what you're doing. Sleeves are also much much stronger if you want to run 100mm pistons and won't have to worry about cracking a cylinder wall from the thin walls. The guy who had coolant and head gasket issues sounds like he had a shitty block and whoever did the work did crappy work and didn't know what they were doing. Darton sleeves you don't have to worry about them dropping either as they have a multi-step side to them to hold them in place and a big step around the top that really increases strength and makes it literally impossible to drop the sleeve. Sleeved blocks are expensive but they are the way to go if you want to build your motor right and do it reliably and push big power or just have piece of mind.

So to clarify, any build running under 550 hp only needs forged pistons, upgraded rods, and bearing? Is this correct?

I am wondering about the ez30 or ez36 with a turbo SWAP on my 2012 sti which engine is the best to build up ...I'm digging that gt3 Porsche sound. Will Those blocks handle 550 or six as well??
@BP-fx3qc

By the time you're done with a proper built ez engine swap you would probably be able to buy that 911 gt3 with all the money spent. Not worth it in my opinion.

Can deck along with sleeves be done? Or one or the other?
@E92M3
@E92M3 6 жыл бұрын
Rather just close the deck honestly. The amount of flex after you have bored and sleeved a stock block is asking for trouble.

What about closed vs semi vs open deck blocks and the pros, cons?
@mbdulka
@mbdulka 5 жыл бұрын
Closed inserts into stock engine will hold more power than the stock semi-closed ... reliable up to 700 HP. Outside of that, the iron sleeves will handle more power. They might get "hotter" than the stock alu cylinders as well, so you might get more heat (and they're heavier). If you're building a drag car or want big boost for short periods, sleeves are best IMO, but a closed deck 2.5 properly tuned will probably be more reliable if you're racing the car hard. Tune, oil quality/type, and proper oil clearances play a bigger role in longevity than sleeves or closed deck though (unless you're going 800+ HP). Just my amateur opinion (I built my 650 HP E85 engine with sleeves, no issues yet ...).

if i wanted to do about 400-450whp but my block bore would be 100mm oversized, should i sleeve it or stick with the 100mm bore?

FNP Tuned well i guess ill let the shop know tomorrow to go ahead with the sleeves. instead of going from my 99.75mm to 100mm. Thank you for reply. the shop also told me 100mm for my power goals is a risk

MLS Style head gaskets helped a lot with head gasket issues. We rarely see issues with them on sleeved, o-ringed builds.
