3/8 inch for lightning connector side and 1/2 inch for USB-A connector.

Why not just use a very long shrinktube for the entire length of the cable; seems a lot easier, requires no soldering not sure I understand the justification for all this work; just for fun of the craft?

heat shrink tubing typically does not come in sections that long - also it does not come in this 'unicorn' type of coloring. this is all about customizing to fit your own personality.

the sleeving likely adds durability / a bit of customization. Heat shrinks would help in most cases though and is less tedious to do
