Actually showed results from the process! Everyone else just shows the hassle but not the results to confirm it’s merit of effort.

Unfortunately, many times it's tough to get back to the job site to take after photos. But if possible I'll do it when I can. Thanks for watching

I hate nimblewill, only grass killer works on it (tried many things through the years). Had to kill off half my yard in Gahanna this year (2024) and replant. Used the HomeDepot slice seeder to prepare the soil, and then had to rake a lot of the dead grass out (too much to leave on even after mowing low). I manually through seed down since you can't trust the drop box on the rental seeder, then I ran over the yard again with the slicer to cover it the seed up. Came in pretty good and survived the hot dry summer this year.

Thank you very much for your time and expertise to help me with my lawn. It was getting a little frustrating with that Nimblewill but this really helps! Thanks again! Brian

Yes sir. You are welcome, keep in mind that it will try to creep back in so be sure to get on it early if you do a renovation. Good luck!

I was actually wondering if the excess thatch provided benefit in that exact way last week. Thanks for the confirmation.
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
When slit seeding I suggest about a 1 inch layer of thatch on the renovated area. It helps to protect the new grass and keep it moist. However, more than that can suffocate the new growth.

Great video. I’m curious about the amount of seed I would need to purchase for slice seeding as apposed to over seeding. I’m doing an acre with about 50% grass coverage.

I have a 6000sq ft area that’s patchy, I’ve been working to correct soil deficiencies. In fall after I aerate and slice seed would it also be necessary to spread top soil? Thanks for all the help
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not, but sometimes topdressing can bring good nutrients into the soil. If you're using a good compost blended mix.

Thank you for your videos. I live in Wisconsin and have a 1.5 acre parcel. I have areas scattered that I want to slit seed. Do you do both vertical and horizontal passes when slit seeding?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 6 ай бұрын
Generally yes we will go in two directions. However it also depends on the amount of existing turf base.

Super helpful. Thx for the explanation! Do you think slice seeding is much much better than using a drop seeder? And does the slice seeder actually drop the seed precisely in the slices? Or is it a seeder that is simply cutting lines in the ground and some seeds happen to fall in those slices and a lot don’t?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers Жыл бұрын
The seed openings are placed right above the blades so the machine will cut the seed in. There is still a lot of seed that missed those slices though too.

Thanks for this! I just hired a company to slice seed my lawn. I have half an acre, I'm doing my best to water it and praying for some rain. How can I ensure I'm watering enough and what will happen if it doesn't get watered daily?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 3 жыл бұрын
I'd you have a hot day and it dries up soon after the new seedlings emerge it can fry them and you'll need to do additional seeding. You you water daily for at least a month. Then begin to taper off slowly.

If you have patchy lawn does the slice seeder damage the good lawn?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 3 жыл бұрын
Slice seeding will thin the grass out a bit, If the lawn is more than 60 percent healthy I recommend aeration and overseeding instead. There's not really any reason to slice seed if you have healthy grass.

Thanks for your video! When you go over with a slice seeder more than once, do you change directions, or stay in the same direction to limit damage?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 3 жыл бұрын
Usually, if the area is mostly dead, I'll cover a second pass at a lower seed rate. Typically on a 45° angle from the first pass. If there is 50% grass or more, I'll only do a single pass to avoid thinning the existing turf base. It takes a little experience in judging.

Coincidentally yesterday I slit seeded about half an acre of my lawn. That rented machine about beat me to death. No kidding that it's a hard machine to wrangle. I will know in about two weeks whether or not it took. I will say that a LEVEL lawn makes the machine work better. It loses traction on bumpy lawns and it's really heavy to manually push it. Just wish they had an attachment that could go on my riding mower.

Well, did your seeding work out?

@@ColumbusLandscapers Thanks for following up. Actually, yes, it did. But if I had known when I did it what I know now, I would have doubled or tripled the number of seeds I planted. The grass has come up, but is thin in places. I think this is due to two things. First, is the amount of seeds that the machine dispensed. It wasn't uniform on all my lawn. But secondly I think I planted some of it too deep. My soil was hard in some places and soft in others, so the machine dug in too deep in the soft places and not deep enough in the hard soil. Also, I would have fertilized. At this point the new grass would be burned by fertilizer, so all I can do is hope for the best. A sidenote: I also did the backyard with a different type of seed because it is sunny and my front yard is shade. NONE of the sunny seed germinated. I think it was just a bad batch of seed, so I will have to do that again. As a matter of fact, I am sold on slit seeding. It works better than anything else I have tried. But next time I will fertilize and use more seed. Thanks for turning me on to this method.

Tryed this just September 5 used slice machine reseeding making a dirt ready not go results ground has to be perfect like a golf course and mine is not. Seed feeding rolls by the level of the ground off level doesn.t work well plus seeds run out way to fast put 3 pounds in made 2 runs it was empty

May be a bad machine, wrong settings or just lack of practice. Keep in mind I have 25 yrs experience, so I can make it look easier then it is. Good reason to hire a seasoned pro. Thanks for watching!

Can you use one of these machines when you have an irrigation system?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you just have to watch for the heads and valve covers. We ask our customers to mark them before we come. Since the machine only penetrates a about 2" the water lines are not an issue.

Great info. Have a similar issue, but my problem is applied too much herbicide and now my entire lawn is Yellow. How long should I wait for the herbicide to dilute from the ground before slit seeding? I’d like to take advantage of the seasonal rains in mid May. Thanks in advance!
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
It depend what type of chemicals you applied. Read the bottle and see what it says related to seeding. Watering will probably help to disapate the chemicals more quickly so I if you're not going to cause a runnoff situation you can water some to speed up the process.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. The day after I sprayed the herbicide (mixed Momentum FX2 and Roundup Quick Pro), w shot a heavy all day and all night down poor and has rains a few days since. Application was done two weeks ago. It looks very- very bad!!😢
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
Water it quite a bit for the next couple weeks. Wait a few days for it to dry up, then do your slice seeding. Be sure to allow at least 3-4 weeks from the application date before the seeding.

How do you determine the slice seeder blade height?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 6 ай бұрын
On this machine there is a selector lever it'll let you adjust the depth of the blades. Normally you're only looking for about 1/2 to 1 in depth.

Great video, are you happy with the LS TR seeder? I’m looking to buy one, just not sure about this one or an older Jacobsen 524 slit seeder. What grass type did you plant?
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
I really like the lawn solutions seeder, but they haven't been made in around 10 years So, no parts or support is available. I have several of them and have done a lot of fabrication to mine. Still one of the best and fastest walk behind seeders I've used. Only when equipped with the 9hp. The smaller units are underpowered.

Columbus Landscapers Yes I know the company no longer exists, from what I gathered online the owner/engineer has created a new company with an improved design called Stinger. I like the older ones since there in my price range. I though you could buy some parts through Toro/Exmark such as the blades and cables? If I can’t get anything than I’ll look elsewhere. Bit of a long shot but you ever use the Jacobsen 524 drill seeder? Similar design to the Ryan Mataway, but I can get a little cheaper used.
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you've done your research. 🤔 I have used the mataway seeders but not the jacobson. They do a good job if you can keep them working and not clogged up. They are also much slower and cumbersome. Yes, I know the guy you mentioned and his new company. I have some stinger equipment and have done some demo testing of that equipment. I've also ran the stinger slice seeder a larger until compared to the LS machine. Good luck.

Well I was thinking about renting one , good thing you had that message running across the bottom . What is a low input Turf Type Tall Fescue brand I can put down with a spreader ? I’m close to Caudill Seed Distribution Center . The slice seeding prices are ridiculous in KY .
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
We'll, over seeding alone will not do much unless you at least do aeration. Don't know the prices there but here it's about $150 per thousand SQ ft. Look into Titan tall fescue seed.

G T somehow missed that. Great video. I have a quick question pls. I have bare patches on my back hard and was recommended slice seeding to make the lawn look even. How intense is this? The last time I did aeration it totally messed up my yard with a lot of unevenness on the ground and I just did not like it at all. If I do decide to go with slit seeding how much time will it take for the lawn to look like the photos? I live in Minneapolis. Also, please recommend the grass seed to put please.
@ColumbusLandscapers
@ColumbusLandscapers 4 жыл бұрын
Grass seed type would depend on your situation and environment. Also the timing will depend on factors like temp, water, and seed variety. The lawn in this video was a 4 week progression.
