Founded in the 13th century, the fortified town of Chinguetti was known for its scholars and its numerous libraries. Thanks to the conservation efforts of librarians, the precious manuscripts of Chinguetti, the Sorbonne of the desert, have resisted the onslaught of time.
But nowadays, the libraries themselves are threatened by the desert advancing. Ouadane, a 14th-century fortified city listed as a cultural heritage site is also suffering from the ravages of time, desertification and the rural exodus.
But just like the inhabitants of Chinguetti, the locals there have sworn to preserve and protect their ancient city.
