Excuse my ignorance, but is it ok for his foot to lift for a moment from the end of the strip (the blue part)? In my mind that would be out but I'm not familiar with the exact rule
@SlicerSabre
@SlicerSabre 3 жыл бұрын
Lifting is fine so long as the foot is not behind the line. It's often advised not to though because from the angle the ref is at it can look like you're out when you're not

@@XandrestarX I fully agree with @Slicer Sabre. Another way to describe it is 'on the strip' is defined to mean having (part of) a foot within the volume above the strip. It seems counter-intuitive but works because we want fencers to be able to use the full length of the strip and change direction and you don't want to punish a fencer whose back foot is behind the end line but has their whole body over the strip and lifts their front foot to move forwards. Oh just has the athleticism to take advantage of that rule definition to the extreme. Arguably it would easier to ref (especially in an environment where we don't have video) if we instead said anything grounded beyond the end of the strip is off. It would be much easier to see definitively, but effectively shortens the usable length of strip by a lot.

The second time the refresh gave me this video. I wonder how did the Koreans train? Or is their performance (mainly of Oh, Gu or Kim) just out of talents, or there is something special about their training that let them do 4m lunges? I hope I can have that athleticism as I fence :)

It's really not helpful in a sport that is down to the milisecond when the screen overlay shows green before the player even made his hit. I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on at 1:59 then realised the screen overlay was signalling green at least half a second before the score display in the footage went green. Is the screen overlay psychic?

The leg muscles used in this alone will have you going wtf at most fencers if you had actual basic health knowledge, let alone realized how he is even doing this. I like nothing about Oh Songuk. He is just too tall, too fast and too dumb. Look how Szilagy debunks him. Oh Songuk just attacks like a true idiot, and ca 85 % of other frases he loses. He's been a disaster to the sabre fencing in general, and it took too long for the opponents to call him to shorter distances, where he is close to zero.

@@raoulkurvitz6305 Sorry I was a bit coarse, but if you don't see Oh's brilliance then you simply aren't watching properly. You claim Szilagyi has debunked him yet Oh has beaten Szilagyi more than he has lost to him. There are many fencers as tall and even taller than Oh, yet none of them can move as sharply as he does. If Oh attacks like an idiot then I can't begin to imagine what you think of the fencers who he beats
