From the highest peaks to the shoreline, the Corsican relief is characterised by countless valleys and irrigated by many waterways. The landscape can change quickly from gorges to planes, with routes that frequently butt up against the foothills.
Nowadays, the inhabitants of this abrupt terrain try to maintain artisanal activities and skills, such as making cheese and the traditional charcuterie for which the island is renowned and which are part of the local lifestyle.
Water is a key feature in the Corsican landscape, and it has allowed the rural communities to survive and thrive in the mountainous territory. Some 24 rivers flow across half of the island, including the Liamone, the Rizzanese, the Gravone, the Taravo, the Golo, the Tavignano and the Restonica.
