I had a neighbor who drove a navy blue 79 cadillac deville on trues an vogues. His system would bump this hard for about a year on his way home from work. You could literally hear him coming 10 blocks away. It was like waiting for the ice cream man. I loved every minute of it. Its crazy because i just realized what he was doing. He was trying to send us kids a message. He was the 1st young man with a wife an kids that i had ever seen buy a home. At 1st we thought he was a drug dealer but he worked for GM. I saw an article today about Slick Rick curating a hiphop jewelry show at the museum of natural history. And that inspired me to take a look at this video again. I was the cinematographer for Young World and seeing it all these years later brought back a lot of memories. I was shooting a lot of hiphop videos at the time and Rick liked one I just did for KRS-One, also with a strong ethical message, “love is gonna get you”. Probably NYC in 89 or 90. It was very low budget, shot in a day, but I’m happy to see how good it looks. I love the colors and dark shadows. The “drifting” and “Dutch angles” were a time capsule/cliche of the era. I remember the “Batman” gels, rosco midnight blue and lighting the paper backdrops with colored lights so they’d really glow. Mostly I remember the dancers, how beautiful, energetic and stylish they were and are. The long montage at the end was probably faded out for TV because the lyrics end but the track keeps going. There’s a slow motion close up of one of the girls, her head moving one way while her tongue goes the other. Wow. God bless them.

Lost my mum few months ago, she was quite young. Very sudden. We had a complicated relationship and were never really close. I secretly always had this song in my heart for many years. That I would make her proud, solve her debt problems, see her happy with someone who respected her. I know this song isn't about all of that but it always gave me the drive to do better and to make things work for her. Anyway, special piece of music.

That's how I felt about music from my parents' era. They played everything from Bobby Womack to Curtis Mayfield to The Temptations to Otis Redding and so many more. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized how good the music is. If you really listen to the lyrics to the songs from that era (Bobby Womack is my favorite.), they will put you up on a lot of game.
