Derek is his 1st record not a full blown classic? Every track is a hit like THRILLER. were kinda close in age but in 1987 or 88 his tape stayed in my walkman. He was the first to be comedic on a rap album. I was crushed when he went behind bars.

@@justinb954 I LOVED his debut album and all his music! When I started listening to Slick Rick, almost no one in my neighborhood of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn NY had much familiarity with rap music and nobody in my school had heard of him or his songs. So my classmates came to the conclusion that Slick Rick was my imaginary friend. I insisted that he was real but they'd just laugh at me, and would jokingly ask me if I was hanging out with my buddy Slick Rick last night 😂. Finally after a few months I brought in my Slick Rick cassette and everyone was shocked! They all said "What? He's actually a REAL person"?? LOL

LOL -your a cool dude! That album hit me at just the right time, i was with my 1st love & also What I loved was his sense of humor. (Indian girl) + his off key singing (like ODB did so well 8-9 yrs later) he even talked about having a job! how many MCs have ever said that? BTW --yo, my whole fam was from right next store to you. IN sheepshead bay!! lol Also andy warhol when to sheepshead bay high. We were lucky to be there from the beginning of Both the 1st and 2nd raps golden eras.

ditto - i was in like 5th or 6th grade and they used the 'Inspector gadget' sample on the show - so we just loved it all. they have made soooooooooo much money off of sample use from the show & la di da di it kept ricks pockets full while incarcerated. Snoop covered lodi dodi on his 1st album and that record went diamond plus 1 million. 11 mil and still selling. now thats love.

I’m so happy that she mentioned Lodi Dodi’s historic record for being the most sampled from Hip Hop song in history. Slick Rick is exceptionally kind to his fans as well, so this it’s great to see the Legends stay fresh like this. His voice is iconic, his flow is iconic, his vibe is iconic, and it’s rare to someone who comes into the game with all of these things in place. The thing new artists lack, as a Dj of new and classic Hip Hop, RnB, and Pop, is longevity. The newer artists also have such a manufactured style that when a label decides they’re mo longer in favor, they manufacture another artist to fill that void. Look at Slick Rick, you could always bump his hits and get love through every genre from its original release until now. Children’s Story may be old, but it never sounds old. Think about any song you hear all the time on the radio now, it’s hot for a min, but if you get caught playing it even one to two years after it comes out, you look out of touch. You can still bump the top 90s Hip Hop artists into new school DJ set, but again, if you want to stay hot, even playing Cardi B’s Money is seen as whack 7 months after it came out. That shows you in real time how most of it isn’t going to hold up. You could still get people to grind to LL Cool J’s Doin’ It, now give it a few more months and City Girl’s Twerk and Act Up, which are still somewhat hot now, won’t even pack dance floors. They won’t be played 10 years from now and still seen as hot. It’s not 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. dying that made them icons, PAC sold 6 million plus copies of All Eyez On Me while he was alive, and it’s sold well beyond diamond now. It was packed with hits, How Do U Want It, California Love, Scandalous, All About U, I Ain’t Mad At Cha, All Eyez On Me, Picture Me Rollin’, and I can keep going. It’s the same thing with Life After Death, only the second Hip Hop double CD after All Eyez On Me. Basically, now it’s a singles driven market, so most Hip Hop artists don’t care about crafting an album with different moods for different kinds of Hip Hop fans. It’s mostly all trap beats, even if you’re a New York rapper, an LA rapper, Up North or Down South Rapper. The beats are so easy to blend with new rappers that it doesn’t take the same Dj I.Q to blend almost any current Rap song into another one. It does take skill to blend classic Hip Hop and RnB into current RnB and Hip Hop and maintain the right vibe because some old school artists don’t sound right being played before or after current artists. You might get away with putting DaBaby after B.I.G. in a smaller venue with mostly younger Rap fans, but in the right club, it’ll get you side eyed for disrespecting a legend, and that would be warranted.

It's a tired message, but it's a tired argument against all the bullshit in the music industry for the past 13+ years and you voice it so brilliantly. I recently came across Sticky Fingaz' debut LP and could not believe what I was hearing and yet of course, WHY have i never heard of it? 2001, mind you, but one of the greatest HipHop albums i've ever heard and gobsmacked nobody else talks about it.

@@Hysteria98 1999-2002 was a hell of a hard time for music because of NAPSTER & free downloading albums. And maybe because he wasn't with ONYX ? They were a brand new style. Then Sticky was always more prevalent than the rest. in movies and in onyx.

@@anthonyarcanumsanctumregnu9551 huh??? Clarks were made popular by Jamaicans. That is why Rick wears them. Outside of America people associate Clarks with Jamaicans. We have been wearing them since the 40s, and brought the style to NYC. Every New Yorker from those days will attest to this. Even the Wu. I would say the Wu made Hip Hop heads outside of NY know about Clarks. There is even a Clarks commercial about Jamaica, none about the Wu.

LOVE TO Slicky Ricky D. Aside from the gaudy jewelry hes always had the greatest style. (Even with his little, horribly timed detour in 1991) Hes for sure an x large GOAT! making one of the best albums of all times "where hes the only one rapping on his record" and early use of skits in his songs. Not a skit as a track but, he built his songs with his own skits. (Skits became super important for some reason) Rappers would say yeah the records done but the skits ain't ready. WTF? If you didnt buy "Da art of storytelling in 98 or 99" you are missing out. Its a small departure for him because of trends but, its a solid banger. We have the ruler & outkast remix that just destroyed the airwaves.
