I have been a fan of Alvin Lee for over 50 years. I learned that both of Alvin Lee’s parents played the guitar and he started playing when he was 13 ( he was born in 1946); that might explain the influence of the music in 1950’s on his repertoire.

I went to Bogart's Nightclub in Cincinnati, Ohio back in 1990 to see the mad albino himself, Johnny Winter live, and man did he ever blow the doors out of the place. But the best part of the entire night was when he came out for his final encore, he said he had a friend from the old days backstage that he would love to have come out and play with him on a couple of songs. After a little prodding, Johnny finally grinned like a possom as the late, great Alvin Lee walked out and joined the late, great Johnny Winter onstage. The two broke into a medley of old rock classics. I remember Whole Lotta Shakin', Blue Suede Shoes, and Jailhouse Rock being among them. Then came a powerhouse performance of Johnny & Alvin paying major homage to Jimi together in a mind fuck cover of Red House. The guitar licks traded between the two during Red House was incredible. It left me nearly speechless to see 2 of rocks all-time great blues-rock guitarist not trying to outdo each other, but rather feeding off of one another's playing. The energy between them was on full display and both of their playing was flawless. After Red House Alvin left the stage and Johnny played one more song. He then had Alvin come back out and take a bow with him and the band. It was the only time I ever saw Alvin play live, but that collaberation between Johnny & Alvin on Red House is enough to last a lifetime.

I have been a ALVIN LEE , Ten Years After fan for 40 years , never got to see Alvin Lee play , but got a bunch of their tunes . Got to see Johnny Winter live three times , the last time was two weeks before he passed away . The first two times he had help getting out on stage , the last time he walked out on his own and ripped that guitar apart , incredible show . That would be awesome to see the two of them together !!!!!

And this is why rock and roll will never die! I am from this era and have passed this great music down to children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren! They all say we had the best music and their Playlists are full of classic rock. They won't even bother with what they try to pass off as music today. Back then it was pure, raw talent! No autotune! No gimmicks, just talent!

The Led zeppelin medley were derived from TYA they had seen them in London in 68 and Jimmy Pages jaw dropped to the Flppr. After Woodstock ended Hendrix stated that Alvin's playing scared the shit out of him. After Alvin died Tommie Iommie said there would be no Black Sabbath. Van Halen saidwithout Alvin as a model he would never have become a shredder.

Yes Paige "stole" many licks from Lee. He used to stand backstage and watch how Alvin did it. According to what I have heard. And yes Lee was a big fan of Elvis! Thanks for your reaction, you notice a lot more than most other people that react, very nice to hear!

Blue Suede Shoes first was done by Carl Perkins in 1956 which acc. to Wikipedia was his greates hit. I saw Alvin Lee live in Hamburg, Germany, back in the 80's. He never lost his fastness and was just as incredible as in Woodstock. Of course my first time coming across him was watching the famous Woodstock Movie in a theatre and I was immediately mesmerized by this guy, even a little more than with Jimmi Hendrix who played Voodoo Child in the movie. While I turned to be a big Hendrix fan as well of course. I just loved anyone handling their guitars like raging thunderstorms and those days brought forth quite a plethera of these. R.I.P. Alvin Lee.

Don't hurt your jaw, Mike! Dropped real far then stayed open during the first 2 minutes! You bet that bassist -- Leo Lyons -- kept up the beat! Performed the role the drums usually do. Can you believe the high quality of the sound recording at a live, out-doors concert in the late '60s?! Love to time travel listening to the whole Woodstock album. Cocker, Santana, Janis, Jimi, Johnny W, Creedence, Sly, and all the others -- gotta be in the top 10 of all time live albums. "Blue Suede Shoes" written in 1955 by Carl Perkins, a caucasian man. Thanks, Mike, for a heartfelt, professional analysis. This was my college-days, alcohol-induced, air-guitar go-to song that got lots of laughs from my house mates.

When Alvin Lee announces the song, "I'm Going Home - by helicopter" - it was a joke - meaning, when they left Woodstock, they'd be flying out by helicopter. So, it's not a cover of a song by a band called Helicopter. :)

There were many groups brought in and out by helicopter. This is Woodstock. In an interview, Joni had a visit from CSN at her Hotel Room, trying to convince her to come. They tried to entice her by saying they were taking a copter from the Pan Am roof. She was doing a television show and said her producer that was more important.

Further to my previous comment, I strongly recommend listening to Petter Green’s playing on I’ve Got A Mind To Give Up Living with Fleetwood Mac - the original group . The first album I ever bought was Mr Wonderful by Fleetwood Mac and on the video I mention Green is just extraordinary - just as stunning as Alvin but in a different way. The video to watch shows Green wearing a light coloured shirt with a devising on the front and playing the guitar. It is a live recording - an old BB King song. Green is regarded here as one of the greatest ever.

Mike, you nailed it right on the nose. back in the day Alvin was way ahead of all the "other talents guitar wise w speed fluency and the rock and roll voice neither Clapton, beck?, Page or Townsend had period. I've been following all these bands since I was a Beatle fan, and loved cream, still like most of the who, zeppelin etc, but Alvin could always be recognized with or without ten years after by just his guitar and or voice really. I remember hearing a song on a college radio station many yrs after that was disbanded, a song called " my baby's come back", and I thought (is it true? I knew before the announcer said it was Alvin Lee. then hearing the lead and acusti guitar on the song. I knew no one else was capable or that talented voice an guitar wise. recognizable to any Alvin fan by just the licks and riffs of his. Mike, as you research more into Alvin's music. you will realize what a lot of people missed in this era. no bad to zep, but tya was the best..

A little background info...this was the last day of the festival and the crowd was estimated to be more than 400,000 strong. 1965-1975 a revolution in music. It will be studied by future generations. We appreciate Woodstock as music fans not historians. Go 55 years before 1969, its 1914. Music fans don't listen to that music, historians do. See? A revolution occurred.

The song has three references, Biue Suede Shoes, written and sung by Carl Perkins, I gotta a woman mean as she could be, Roy Orbison, Whole Lotta Shakin, by Jerry Lee Lewis, who wrote and performed the songs, and BTW were white. Perkins and Lewis and Presley all started their careers at Sun Records.

It was a blessing to grow up in London during the Sixties with these stunning guitarists. And bands - amazing for such a small country. I agree about Page who was, after all, a back-up guitarist to Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds. I think the likes of Steve Howe of Yes was another guitarist who was better than Page but Zeppelin have a cult following. I bought the first Zeppelin album as soon as it came out and bought the poorer second one but skipped the rest. They BORED me and Plant’s screeching voice was tiring. I even preferred the voice of Jack Bruce even though he was mainly a bassist.
