Even though this video is pretty old, you welding that rod on the vice grips is actually better than the attachment that comes with most slide hammer kits nowadays because you welded it aligned with the jaws. The attachment threads in the back instead of the screw of the vice grips but that puts you at a weird non straight angle and makes it less effective. I will actually weld one of those long nuts on mine to replace the entire rod at the same angle. Thanks for this!

Jody, I watched this video when you first posted it and have made several of these vise-grip slide hammers in various sizes. Everyone is impressed with them. Thank you for the idea and the how-to video.

Thanks for the slide hammer tip. I'm gonna make one tomorrow as soon as I buy a grip. As always your video has helped a great deal and your welds have impressed me.

@simpleinseattle yep, the aluminum block was a big heat sink...lots of questions about why the aluminum didnt melt too....thats one reason, the other is that the oxide on the aluminum is hard to melt on DCEN. If that pin was aluminum, it would have been tricky

Good video. I was at a flower garden show last week & a backyard welder was selling mailbox & post, arbors, planter he made. He said no one use tig or stick welding any more & only junkyards use cutting torch, everyone uses mig only, now. I am one of 20 welder I know who still use all four types of welding, has the small set-up went to mig only. if so is it lack of skill or because it is cheaper to get set up & ran. I use a Bobcat to tig, mig & stick, but we use the mig less then stick & tig.

Brilliant video, a cluster of great tips. I would have worried about melting the aluminum. Or, if similar metal, welding the stud to the piece. I liked that portable welding table as well. Looks like it could be made by hand. What kind of metal is the base made of?

The aluminum acted like a heat sink correct? Great video. I enjoy shop knowledge tricks. As always, thanks for the great vid.

Hi Jody ! Thanks for sharing your very interesting knowledge. I have seen those foldable Nomad welding table, but I was afraid about the thickness of if. I mean it seems to be 2mm, so doesn't it deform itself due to the heat ? Thanks

Hey jody. Is your filler hand a fiberglass glove? Tig hand?! Also great idea. I love these insider pro tips. I wouldn't mind more of these :) thanks jody

I noticed you mentioned Copper Alloy as a 3rd hand tool. In another video I think you mentioned copper silicon when TIG-ing stainless? Are these alloys used because their composition prevents arching while providing an additional means of holding down the work piece?

Nice video. Wish I could tig weld. It's pretty tough. At least I have mig and stick down pretty good

Just keep practicing. I started out with stick welding with a little everlast welder and have worked my way up. Each is a little different but once you build up some muscle memory it gets easier.

@littlestworkshop I do. I do, but both my tanks have a lot less pressure in between uses.

I baught a nomad table after watching your demonstration? Do you know what coating is on the table because I welded aluminum to it thinking it wouldn't stick. And last do using magnets to hold parts afect stick welding?

how much do these tables cost, looks like you could fairly easily fabricate one from a cheap shop table. just replace the top wood part with some 1/4 or 1/2"

What stops the weld metal from fusing to the side of the hole? Is it because they are different types of metal?

@605manuel... I forgot to wash that sucker off...its a fake tattoo I was trying out for my grand-kids.

Wasn't there a danger of "melting" the aluminum? BTW does anybody out there have a problem with your gas tanks leaking??? I've used my tanks sporadically, both mig and tig tanks, and my tig tank was empty. It's leaking from some where. I'm thinking from the pressure relief valve.

@littlestworkshop I guess I'm an unlucky sob. I'll be upgrading to a bigger tank and I'll check the connections with soap and water before I take it home.

Never mind, cuz it's a heat sink, I see it in the comments now

Wow that is awesome!!! I just loved workin for old school guys that helped me wreck my back and neck tigging inside the box, so to speak!! 8(

Other awesome heatsinks are bus bars from old electrical panels...copper ain't cheap! Just need really good feet on your clamps to provide better surface area sinking around the weld...

I watched my stubborn journeyman struggle with peening a counter top weld with long chisels and no room to hammer and I mentioned a slide hammer with a 180* bend on it and he looked at me like he shit his pants!!! Could've saved three hours of bullshit
