Locksley Wellington Hampton was, fortunately, given the nickname Slide early on as the trombone player in his large, musical family. His father wasn’t sure how to set up the horn for his son which caused Slide to play off the “wrong” shoulder his whole life. Slide did everything right-handed except play trombone.
