This is the best Stivot technique video I have found.

Hello from Utah. Great video. Your comments were precious. You kept me giggling, but the message was spot on. I call unweighted skimming transitions "Feathering." I've been using that technique pretty much since I became a ski bum 40 years ago. I've never trained or raced, but I've made literally a few million turns free skiing. When skiing groomers I feather, or brush, most of my turns. Why? Because a feathered transition is a lot quicker. Depending on conditions, I might feather the turn just for the blink of an eye & you might not notice it. Or halfway through the turn, which would be obvious. Either way, my skis are unweighted & I can set my outside edge back on the snow precisely aligned to the intended path & stomp full pressure on the ski instantly for quick turns. Or I can lay the pressure on later and at any rate to suit my fancy. I have very good balance & for me the risk that comes with feathering seems very small & well worth the result. Since I never have to make gates, the rhythm & radius of my turns are simply the organic product of the terrain & my vision of how I want to ski. Turns out, most folks who I ski with assume I grew up racing until I tell them different. I figure if a ski technique works for a self taught ski bum free skier from Texas as well as it works for elite ski racers from all over the World, it's a keeper. Thanks again. Liked & subscribed.

The first time I saw this was from Ted Ligity on steeps after FIS reduced the sidecut on GS skis. He would slide his tails and lock his edges once he was aligned. I thought he was making a mistake and scrubbing speed, but his run times were crazy fast. He dominated that first season of sidecut reduction. Eventually, Marcel Hirscher became even better at it.

Sometimes it is because of a mistake, but once i saw him training i realised he was doing it on purpose.

A pivot can be thrown in for recovery of line. Wish I knew that in my racing years. On course inspection, they must be deliberately choosing which gates to add a pivot. They use it pre-emptively rather than out of desperation.

Excellent video. I found this very difficult to do on soft snow, or when the ruts are huge.

Thank you! When the ruts are too big this isn´t really an option anymore, and on soft snow it´s difficult because it´s more difficult to transition from sliding to craving. It takes a lot of patience andd practice.

The other name for this maneuver is a stivot. The trick is to not loose too much energy in the skid until you can get the edge lock. You want direction change without making it a hockey stop. At the World Cup level there shouldn't by any more 35m radius skis or coaches that don't know how to set a course. Nonetheless I have even seen Shiffrin do this to make a gate. At lower level races a cause setter does occasionally make an error where this maneuver will have to be used just to make the next turn. This maneuver should be in every racers bag of tricks. Ligity was the master of this turn when 35m skis first came out. What was the FIS smoking when they adopted the 35m skis?????

I think the course was intentionally set tight, so that Victiria can practice the stivot. Thank you for mentioning it!

I actually remember their justification for introducing the >35m GS radius rule. They were trying to take GS back to a more across-the-hill discipline, make it closer to "real" skiing done by the public at large and less closely related to SL. I think it worked TBH, although there was no way I could have handled a 35m ski hahahaha.
