Why don't young bands like this get recognized by the industry anymore? In the 90s, great rock like this was everywhere! Major outlets are only playing rap....aren't people sick of rap by now? This rock is so creative and fresh

Third Herd Because the “industry” is dead. Major labels only help bands that have a pre-existing following with mass-appeal. They don’t work for the bands anymore, the bands work for them. That’s why the only mainstream rock bands right now are the same bands that were around 20 years ago. Now anyone with a MacBook and GarageBand can create music, and anyone with networking skills can get noticed online, bypassing the labels altogether. Fuck the industry.

I'd say everything's sort of decentralised. Though the big guns like Universal and Warner still have a majority control on the market, most genres have sort of broken off and become their own ecosystems. You see it very distinctively with Jazz and Metal in particular. There's a backbone of large mid-tier labels, venues, promoters, recording studios, sound techs, managers as well as artists all maintaining things within their own genre. So they go off and do their own thing, and the mainstream does theirs. It's how everyone's listening is fractured. There's a list of artists I know very well that you may never heard of, and vice versa (and it's not like said artists are even obscure either). Pre-internet, everyone was more or less listening to the same artists from the same sources. Everything's decentralised, and the mainstream just latches onto what it can sell for the most common denominator. And that's certainly no bad thing if you just seek out the stuff you want to hear. You find what you like and you roll with it. That's my thought anyway.
