Slightly scary old express lift

One speed with a simple relay controller which only has enough logic for the lift to go directly from A to B without picking up any other calls on the way.
Notice that the floor position only lights when at the floor? Reason - simple one speed controller! When the lift passes a floor it rotates the floor selector to the "AT FLOOR" position. This is when the bulb lights. If this floor is the lift's destination then it'll stop. If not, as soon as the floor has passed the floor selector moves round to the "BETWEEN FLOOR" position and the bulb goes out, until rotated around again at the next floor, and so on.

It still amazes me just how tough old express lifts are. It has been really abused but still works ok.

Listercurt Good point - if you look at all the major manufacturers like Otis, Schindler and Express, these old lifts are still out there and working and could probably work for longer - it's the knowledge of how to fix them that's disappearing. Fixing an intermittent fault with a relay controller must be a nightmare, but a processor could identify where the fault is.

Schindler is actually one of my favorites because even their modern day stuff works quite well even though theyre not as good as back in the old days they still are quite nice even on the inside

I have a lift with a similar relay logic and it always stops at the furthest floor called. So if you are at G and press 4 and before it stops you press 6 it goes directly to 6. The reason is the floor selector cuts supply to the corrresponding latching relays as it steps thorugh floors and the motor continues to run until all relays are unlatched. The floor selector is similar in concept but a different design, it is a stepping half arc that opens-closes contacts as it steps. It also has some logic to disable the relays on the opposite direction it is running, so calling a floor that has already passed is ignored.

Interesting. So when you say it stops 4, some lifts have a timer to prevent another floor selection for like 10 seconds to allow passengers to leave/enter. Maybe this doesnt have it to instantly it picks up another call?

Sorry to inform you that this is not a real lift :) For many reasons... 1) no gap between the inner and outer doors... actually...2) there are no separate inner and outer doors. 3) the way the doors open..seems they are supported from below rather than above _sliding across the floor.

I'd love to know where this was/is - I currently live in Camden, where this was filmed! I'd hazard a guess and say that it was replaced a long time ago, as it was not in the best of conditions.

I did have a quick look for you. Couldn't find it. But it could have been one of the blocks that was demolished at the top of Stanhope Street to make way for the new HS2 tracks.

@@mrmattandmrchay Ahh thank you very much for this information! From what I've heard, Camden did carry out a mass modernisation scheme of sorts, but even then I have found one or two older lifts - not as old as this one however.

+plateshutoverlock I will be because it costs more money to keep replacing the glass everytime it's broken, and easier to put a blanking plate over it and "job done" - glass will never get broken again!
