Three years ago Andy had a really bad day at school, and we picked him up midway through the day because we thought it was the right thing to do. He didn't go back to school for 18 months. In today's vlog, we got a phone call from school saying he had had an autism meltdown at school, including him taking off his clothes and swearing at teachers, something he's never done in the past. He's not had an incident like this in a long time, but watching this vlog back as I upload it, I think it's pretty clear why it happened.
The day started with Andy having an early doctors appointment for a health check, which meant a change to his normal routine - he'd be missing the school bus, going to the doctors and then we'd drive him in to school. He didn't have a great time at the doctors (who does?) and then when he got to school, they were in the middle of a fire drill, in the rain (we didn't know about this until later in the day). To top it off, the ongoing issue with the school iPad and computer pushed him over the edge, and the meltdown followed. He did stay in school for the full day, but spent a long time in the sensory room calming down, and he wasn't himself when he got home.
We hope this isn't going to be the start of ongoing issues with school again, but we remember how insignificant the original issue seemed 3 years ago, so we've got our fingers crossed for a return to a good school experience. This whole episode is an important lesson in not getting complacent - even when things are going as well as they have been for Andy for the last year, one bad morning can cause all manner of problems...

ABOUT THE CHAPMAN FAMILY
Hello folks and welcome to The Chapman Family! We are Kevin (dad), Anna (mum), Lucy (age 16), Andy (age 14), Amy (age 12) and Dave (around 35 in dog years).
We're daily family vloggers with new videos out at 5pm every day UK time. We vlog about our daily lives, including life as an autism family (Andy is autistic) and lots of nerdy stuff because we just can't help ourselves!
We'd love to have you join us on the road to 100K and share our journey with us! Hit SUBSCRIBE and don't forget to TURN THE NOTIFICATIONS ON!
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHAPMAN FAMILY
When Kevin left his full-time job as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, Anna was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw him because he was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today we're full-time content creators and Kevin is always at home when the kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey as family vloggers! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs and Kevin Chapman.

Its not just his parents, in the UK they have socialized health care so his health needs are covered in their taxes. Big difference than here in the US! The school and medical providers are even checking his health and making sure his needs are being met and everybody is communicating and working together. I have autism and can use VC(Verbal Communication). All I can imagine is this scared and upset little boy and just glad he does'nt live here cause meltdown like this usually ends with the kid Baker Acted or even just thrown in jail(especially if the parents don't pick him up).

@11 11 Yo my mom was a teacher and I am autistic. She was the reason I did'nt drop out of high school( without her I definetly would have) and the reason I have not been arrested or shot! Basically if my mom had died from complications with her diabetes my Dad would have thrown me out or most likely would have been a runaway. Here in US homeless kids are common especially kids with special needs. Because of my mother's training and diligence I turned out better than alot of my peers(Not to mention less spoiled too).

I have high functioning autism and I understand a lot about these situations. When I have meltdowns like that it feels like everyone around me is trying to deliberately hurt me and it makes me very emotional and upset. I then feel that if I don't protest this anxiety and anger, the suffering won't end, therefore I start lashing out. It's basically a cry for help because I feel physically irritated and sick. It's a terrible way to feel, it's like you're trapped. I don't know if this is similar to how Andy feels however I can relate to this situation very well. If that happened to me I would have the same reaction.

Poor kid looked so tired( I actually could tell he was not well at all.)He had dark circles under his eyes and sounded very groggy which of course he probably was crying too. Of course when he got better he perked right up and his couloring was alot more pinked up cause he was pretty pale too. He seems like he's got a very bubbly personality when he is happy. Fire drill always does it; not fun when it's on surround sound!

I am just glad in the UK they don't pull the same crap like they do here. In three different states they threw little kids in jail(I am talking about under the age of legality 6-9 yrs old) for meltdowns or another case; the school hired cop tortured a little boy in the principles office. The worst abuse cases involved children of color with special needs. I am just glad I don't attend public school anymore and that I survived unscathed.

Im on the spectrum with attention deficit and psych issues and i have days like Andy's was sometimes. I struggle when things i cant control change. It all gets too much for me and i just want to hide and sit in bed watching youtube. Im not sure why Andy started using the F word. But i know i have done it when im overwelmed and need to escape and people keep going on at me about what i need to do or wont listen to what i need. I dont set out to swear. But i just feel like im in an emotional emergency and no one is helping. Its just like i feel like i need to step up my behaviours or i will be at risk of disaster. Its not conscious at the time. At that point i am likely to self harm to try to lower my distress also. I dont really have the best emotion regulation skills. I wish i could get help with that. But im assessed as too high functioning. I guess on my good days i might be. But on bad days i really arent.

I'm going to therapy to get a diagnosis. Meanwhile i refer myself as autistic, because i relate with it. I actually have meltdowns and hit my head and pull my hair. And i can get oversimulated really easily actually. Like at school when the teacher is speaking to another student while i try to study , i get oversimulated. This comment doesen't say everything that happens to me. I'll edit this when i get my diagnosis

Poor Andy 😢. It goes to show that Andy is very complex and no-one not even experts can explain why he had his meltdown. The saddest thing is he can’t tell his mum and dad why he had his meltdown or what triggered it. I hope he didn’t hurt himself or others. You don’t have to answer this question but, does the school know that he strips naked when he has a meltdown? Just wondering because of all this child safety and protection and incase the school report the incident to the police and you and Anna get accused of horrible things involving Andy.
@roycropper698
@roycropper698 5 жыл бұрын
FLGalpha didn’t mean the actual meltdown itself but, the whole stripping incident. I hope the school know that’s part of his meltdown routine and not anything else. Due to child protection and safety the school would have a duty of care to report that sort of behaviour to the police and the social services would intervene. Of course, I’m not accusing Kevin and Anna of anything but just nowadays social services and schools have to report the simplest things.

FLGalpha I know they would’ve. I also know the school would’ve also had experts and experience in meltdowns and challenging behaviours and have probably had incidents similar to Andy.

Its illegal for a School to make a Doctors Appointment on behalf of the Child here in the USA unless its something to do with Child Protective Services and there is a Baker Act which allows an involuntary 72 hour admission to a Mental Hospital in case of a suspected case that requires this intervention. How is it in the UK? BTW I love Channel 4 Documentaries!

New subscriber! I have a 4 year old with non-verbal Autism, severely blind and half deaf. This past week he has been going naked. It's stressing and also upsetting at the same time how I have to stress about him not getting cold, then worry about the publics respect of seeing a naked 4 year old boy... I'm 23 keeping strong but he is a strong boy and hope to have some advice.

I’m not sure I’ve got any good advice to offer unfortunately - Andy was 7/8 before he started regularly wearing clothes at home, and still strips naked when he’s stressed now sometimes. All I can suggest is keep persevering with it, and hopefully things will start to get better

Even with anxiety meds, he’s bound to have bad days-as we all do. Who knows what could have made him upset? Being a teenager doesn’t help with mood swings either, I’m sure. It was probably just a bad day. Glad to see he cheered up in the afternoon!
What caused the meltdown at school?
