I just wanted to mention something to everyone having an issue following the pattern. I'm a beginner. Have never crocheted a hat/beanie before and my beanie came out perfectly. It's honestly not that hard to follow. She explained it perfectly, at least to me. If your issue is missing stitches, get the little clip markers to remind you of where you are so you don't get lost. If your issue is that the hat is too small, there is also a modified version of her pattern in the description box. Follow that pattern and perhaps you will come out with a bigger hat. That's what I did, using a size K rather than a J hook, plus a yarn needing a size K hook. It's a bit big, but I have a hat that fits my head. And believe me, I have a pretty nice sized head LOL

I LOVE this tutorial. Don't be deterred if you've never crocheted a toque before, it is REALLY easy to follow if you even have minimal crocheting experience. This was my first attempt at crocheting a toque and it turned out great, so good that I have made almost everyone I know a toque because I've gotten so many compliments on it. The only thing that I would mention is that I have omitted the dropping of stitches in the brim because it turned out way too tight...and I wear a smallish hat size. The good thing was that once I finished and realized the brim was too tight it was really easy to undo those rows and redo it without dropping the stitches and it turned out perfect. Now I always make it without dropping stitches and it turns out perfect every time. Thanks for a great tutorial Melanie!

I never use a magic ring but wind my tail under the stitches going into the circle. When i slip stitch I just pull it tight and no hole. Easier for me than trying to remember how to do a magic circle. Great tutorial!

I don't understand the comments about this hat not fitting adults. I have made three of them with different types of yarn and they have all fit multiple adults. I do agree with the comments in round 4, but it didn't deter me from figuring it out for myself. I think this is a great tutorial and I am absolutely in love with this hat!!

Cindy Dwyer Hi Cindy! This is what round 4 says... Round 4: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 2 and repeat) , sl st (24 stitches total)... So 2hdc means 2 stitches in the same stitch and hdc 2 means 2 consecutive stitches. So you do 2hdc and then hdc 2 and repeat going around. Does that make sense?

I tried this tutorial and I think it came out how it was supposed to given the yarn and hook I used. My hook might have been too small, and my yarn might be too stiff. My hat came out to be too small and way too stiff for it to slouch or even fit on my head. I'm going to try again because I think it's a great tutorial and explained pretty well. Hopefully using a different yarn and hook will give me a cute beanie!

Hi, Melony, I haven't crocheted for a number of years and the crochet I did do previously was pretty basic. Since my Mother and Grandmother both did crochet, I was taught as a young girl as well. I was taught to do basic stitches without the knowledge of following a pattern. I tried later to follow a pattern only to become discouraged at my lack of understanding. I have always done sewing and quilting so that is the area I focused on. I decided to pick up the yarn again doing only basics again. I made two other beanies and now I have finished this one you have demonstrated. Your instructions were very easy to follow even without the print out. Thank you for your turorial. Try this.... If this was your first hat ever that you were attempting to make... Search "crochet beginners hat" and select one the looks simple and easy... Then watch the video before you make it that way you can kind of figure out how it might work

I'm making this hat right now for the second time. First time it was far too small and a bit short. Big enough for a child not an adult. I'm not a beginner, I've been crocheting for a number of years. I've made some adjustments. Instead of using a J hook, I went with a K. I also added a few more rounds of the puff stitch and it's working out great. I don't know that I'll be decreasing as I haven't gotten that far yet the second time round. If someone seems to be having a tension problem try the next size hook and see if that works for you. I don't see it being a tension issue for me. I don't crochet tight and I don't feel any tension while I'm stitching.

First, Thank you for the video and the pattern. I was not using the same yarn (I was just using what I had) so I went up to the K, did 11 rows of puff stitches instead of 8, and did not decrease for the band. Not quite as "slouchy" as I would have liked, but my girls (teens) seem to like it so I'll call it a win :)

I was having the same issue; I'm going to add a few more rows of the puff stitch to see if that helps. I am using the same brand of yarn as in the video. Plus, I have a big head so I won't decrease on the band just to be safe. It's such a cute hat, I hope it works out!

Hi +Harmony Perry, I was having the same problem. Here's what I did: I added the recommended stitches per row (so 12 hdc for row 2), then slip stitched into the ch 2 like Melanie did. When I started the next row, I did a ch 2 then SKIPPED the first stitch next to the ch 2 before adding the hdc. Counting backwards from the direction I crocheted, I count each stitch and then ignore the last stitch which is next to the ch 2. I've ended up with the correct number of stitches every time and there's even a straight line where the slip stitches meet. Hope this helps!

Use a larger hook (I used a K-size or 6.50 mm hook) and don't decrease when you get to the ribbing. I made a hat for myself following the pattern exactly and it fits, but my mom and sister have larger heads. Those modifications worked perfectly for their hats. :)

Second attempt at making a hat and this turned out almost perfectly. I have a big head and the pattern definitely fits adults. The only issue I had was my tension on the last few rows of single crochet, but I was able to just unravel and do slightly looser.

Your stitches might be to tight. If your counting is all correct but it's still too small, your hook might be the problem. IDK if that helped but I hope it did

I just finished my hat and I'm pretty happy with the results. I used the same yarn and hook as you recommended. Unfortunately, it was too small for my sister, so I ended up making it for myself. It's much stiffer than your hat and doesn't droop as much in the back, is that just because my stitch is tighter? Anyways, I'm happy with the results and will use this pattern with modifications to make a hat for my sister.

Melanie, your written instructions state round 9-16 are rows of puff stitches, but according to your pictures of the hat that show the measurements beside the ruler, I looks like it's more rows 9-20 are all puff stitches, then the single crochet starts at row 21 and not 17. Can you confirm?

I am adding 4 more puff stitch rows then finishing with the same single crochet stitches like she did. Mine is also a lot stiffer... I need to wash it and soften it up. your explanation needs work round three 2 double cr in one stitch then two side by side in there own stitch. I had to rewind and look 3 times before i could understand what you where trying to say. This is not my first but its strait forward if you could explain a little better.

I was so confused as to where she was getting 18 from when she makes it sound like you’re only adding 2 st to the 12. It makes a lot more sense if she had just said do 2 HDC in the next three stitches. Meaning your actually doing 6 more to the 12 (and then you get 18).

Pearle Dyre hmmm. sounds like you are doing it right.. this is from the pattern - Round 4: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 2 and repeat) , sl st (24 stitches total)... So 2 hdc is 2 stitches in the same stitch and then hdc 2 is 2 consecutive stitches.

You can slow the video down yourself. On you are computer bottom right, click the settings icon change the view from normal to 0.75, 0.50 & so on. You're a "Visual Learner" 👍 try this.

I also am making this right now and it is very small. I believe she must have a small head. I will be adding more rows of puffs and maybe even adding on some puffs to make it more slouchy. This hat is definitely not big enough to even be a snugg beanie. I love he pattern though, so I'll definitely be using this as a base for more hats. 😊

I just got finished crocheting this hat. I have crocheted quite a few of your other designs and never had a problem, but this one didn't even come close to turning out right. I used the same yarn and hook size, counted every stitch and each row came out exactly as it should have. Unfortunately, my hat turned out so small that it won't even fit my 8 year old. I really don't want to rip out all my work and start again, but my oldest daughter really wants this hat. I will try going up a hook size to see if that will help. I am hoping that will solve the problem !!!

With the 46 row of puff stitches where it says 9 puff puff2 (46) I keep getting 42 and I have done it 3 times with no luck.. What am I doing wrong and will it effect the finished piece if I leave it as 42 and just keep working? Also what does it mean when it says to not sl st or sc i(i forgot what one it was) but to continue the puff stitch? Thank u for your time.

Am having a problem with row 4: 2 hdc in each stitch (18 from row 3 ) would be 18 x 2 = 36, I have watch the tutorial but you dont count the total stitches, any idea why am coming up with such a difference? Row 3 there are 18 stitches and am not counting the ch 2. Thanks

I loved this, my first one turned out super small but the second one was perfect I am a tight crotcher spook once I loosened up a bit it turned out great!!

This pattern was too small for an adult but works for an 8 year old. Unfortunately, I was making this for an adult so I had to unravel to the last row of puff stitches and tweak the pattern a little bit. Here is what I did; Where she stops the rows of puff stitches, I added 4 more rows of puff stitches to make the hat floppy for an adult. 1 row of SC. 1 row with 5 Sc, 1 SC decrease. repeat until row ends. 5 more rows of SC. Hope that all makes sense.

I have a question: when you do a half double crochet stitch, does it matter if your first pull through (after first yarn over) if the hook comes down in front or behind the yarn? I've tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference, yet for some reason its much more comfortable for me to hook from the front on that part. Thanks! I just made the cutest beanie....but it's wayyyyy too small for my head :( I followed the instructions exactly and my head is an adult small/medium. So I don't know what went wrong. My yarn doesn't stretch much if at all...that may be what caused it

Round 3 ended with 18 stitches, if round 4 then requires 2 hdc in each stitch- how are you supposed to end up with 24 stitches? The way I'm looking at it- I would end up with 36. She didn't say 2 hdc in each stitch. She said 2 hdc in first stitch and a single hdc in next 2 stitched and then 2hdc. The pattern for that round in 2hdc, 1hdc, 1hdc, 2hdc, etc

I used hook "I" for this project because I did not have a J hook. My hat turned out so much smaller. It barely fit my 4 year old and I even added an extra row for the puffy stitch. The hat in the picture seems to have more rows of puffy stitched than what the pattern calls for. I was hoping to make this hat to fit my 16 year old. What might I try differently to make it for because I do love the look of the picture shown?

Great tutorial! I have never done a hat before (or anything except blankets really!) and found your instructions super easy to follow even for a novice :) I did use a much thicker thread and so I had to remove a few rows in order to make it fit my head. Also, it didn't slouch the way I was hoping it would. However, my cousin did say she'd like a French beret styled hat, so I think she will love this! My profile picture shows the finished product! In your tutorial you stated that in round 3 one should have a total of 24 stitches in that round....how do you get 24 if there are 18 in the previous round and you stated to hdc 2 in each ? Please explain and thank you.

Pearl Franco Round 3: ch 2, (2 hdc, hdc 1 and repeat), sl st (18 stitches total)Round 4: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 2 and repeat) , sl st (24 stitches total)... 2hdc means 2 in the same stitch and hdc 2 means 2 consecutive stitches in separate stitches. Does that make sense?

I'm having such a hard time with row 3. I believe it's the same problem LINDAN96 is having. For the life of me I cannot get 18 stitches. I always end up with 16. I have started over half a dozen times and get the same result. What am I doing wrong?? How can I fix this and move on so I can finally finish this hat? ??QUESTION?? Hello, in each round, it says to begin with 2 stitches. In this case, it is a HDC, however, in round 8 it doesn't say to begin with 2 PUFF STS. and then to continue with 9 puff sts. it just says " Puff 9 and then Puff 2 " So this means no Puff 2 after the chain two, correct? I just went through the whole round and was left with three extra sts. which would be, the first 2 and the last one? Took a while to do round 8, only to have it come out wrong. I checked the video before I commented and it skips or has been edited right where it would show the first 2 sts. Please consider looking this over for those of us who may need a bit more help.....thanks.

Make sure you use a size J crochet hook or a 6mm...I used a 5 mm thinking it would make a huge difference but it did....I'm still concerned by hat won't be "slouchy" enough so I'm debating if I will add a few extra puff rows..before I finish. I consider myself medium/beginner crocheter I understood the concept but still had a bit of trouble. it's easily a day project so I'm willing to play around with the pattern to end up with a result I want.

another question (and idk when you'll even see them.. lol..) if i wanted to make this for a larger diameter/larger head.. would it be best to do 2HDC/6DC (kind of like your regular beanie pattern) before you do the puff 9/2 puff increase? i'm making one for a guy whose head is 24.25 inches around. following your pattern here, i made one that fits me, but doing the decrease stitches made it almost too tight to put on, so i'll probably do less of those for this one, too.
