It just dawned on me that the Mavs are MUCH more dangerous than last year. We have to remember that Grimes & Klay have essentially replaced THJ's role. He was supposed to be that 6th man. That 3rd scoring option that can drop in 20 on any given night. And the Mavs got NOTHING from THJ from like Christmas through to the Finals in June...MAAAYBE they had 5 good games from him in that span. But this Mavs team has TWO guys who can fill that role and I would be willing to bet they will NEVER go MIA for MONTHS AT A TIME like THJ did. And 1 of them may go into a slump but BOTH at the same time? Highly unlikely. On top of that, they're both better defensively than THJ and it's not even close. I am starting to wonder if Grimes might not be a better defender than DJJ. Obviously DJJ has more height, length & athleticism to get up there for the blocks. And I realize Portland is turnover prone. But 28 points, 5 steals & 3 assists. How many times did DJJ have a statline like that?

Dont forget big man Naji. He is the replacement forward for DJJ, has better ball handling skills. His perimeter defense while not at the same level, is no slouch either. He can pressure the ball handler quite well. We replaced Green, THJ and DJJ with Klay, Naji and Grimes. Clearly a much better squad

I wonder if we weren't comparing the 3 new Mavs with the wrong Mavs that departed? Everyone was counting whatever Klay brought as an upgrade over THJ. That Grimes would be the Josh Green replacement & Naji could hopefully replace DJJ. The Klay one still holds true. He's that 3rd scorer that could likely drop in 20 on any given night that THJ was supposed to be last year but never really was. The only thing that's changed is that he doesn't NEED to be the 3rd scorer. We'd all love it if he were but there are other options too. But Grimes with his 28, 5 steals, 4 or 5 boards & 3 assist night has me wondering if he could be even better than DJJ was on defense. Obviously he's missing the height, length & athleticism to jump out of the gym for those wild blocked shots that DJJ can get. But 5 steals? That is some really nice POA perimeter defense. Then there's Naji and Green. And if you think about it, Naji is playing Green's role. A guy off the bench you want bringing that POA on both halves of the court, the team's 4th ball handler. I would say that Naji is well on his way to being better than Green. Maybe not in 3pt % yet but certainly in every other aspect...rebounding, defense, scoring, passing.
