SMW was just so good to play. The level design, the huge "open" world, the secret Ghost houses, the Star Road, etc. SMB3 came close, but Mario World just blew it away. There's a reason why the Kaizo Scene from SMW took over and made Nintendo release Mario Maker 1+2. I like the NSMB entry on the DS, too. Here's my Top 5: 1. Super Mario World 2. Super Mario Bros 3 3. My response to the auto scroll complaint is that at least SMB3 keeps them engaging with a lot of obstacles thrown at you. Compare that to NSMB2 where they’re just painfully dull and lacking in substance. Yes that super giant boo was cool for like, a few seconds. But yes, choosing between World and 3 is a very thin line. I’m in the Mario 3 camp because I feel like the secret exit hunting slows the pacing in World down sometimes, but both are top quality.

I approve of the majority of this list, except for the unfair treatment of Wii. The stupid fun of 4 players is really, well, fun! And, let’s not forget this is the first 2D Mario game that allows more than 2 players, and it really was my childhood, as I always used to play the game with my dad. I am definitely biased, but I thoroughly believe it deserved to be ranked higher than Mario Bros, and New Super Mario Bros 2. I respect your opinion, but what confused me is how you really only criticized the boss fights, which let me remind you, are almost exactly the same as New Super Mario Bros 2 (minus the mini-castles), along with being the first game since Super Mario Bros 3 that brought back the Koopalings.

I like The Lost Levels in the same way I like The Perfect Run from Super Mario Galaxy 2. It requires you to play perfectly and it gets creative with how to make levels more difficult. The thing is Lost Levels shouldn't have been its own game. If all the levels from it were just bonus stages that you unlock after beating the original, it'd be great, but by being a standalone game the difficulty curve is wrecked from the start (unlike The Perfect Run which is the final level in Galaxy 2, giving the player 241 stars to master the game)

Even if you put it at number 7, I'm glad you actually gave appreciation to Mario 2. Seriously, what IS it with people looking over Mario 2? Like sure; it is a re-skin of Doki Doki Panic, but if it's fun I don't think it should be overlooked even if it is a re-skin. Besides, Doki Doki Panic didn't even have a run button. Mario 2 added it. Plus, I don't even think it's a stretch to say it's the best looking NES Mario game, and one of my personal favourites visually.

Not at all, the chapter doesn't really do anything to test your platforming skills, it's just annoying. Unlike other mechanics in Celeste, this one doesn't let you have a slimmer of a chance to pass a hazard even if you have technically failed, in a wind section you're either frame perfect or u have to wait for her to fall in a bottomless pit

Honestly, I actually think NSMB2 is the worst out of the NSMB series because it’s just so unoriginal. Like, the only new gimmick is the collecting a bunch of coins, but other than that it just feels like a handheld version of NSMBW and I would argue that the Wii version actually had more new ideas since it was the first home console 2D Mario game in a long time, you can also play with 4 people for the first time, the koopalings made a return after not seeing them in a long time. Like, I feel like it does more new things than NSMB2. I don’t hate NSMB2, it’s a fun game to blast through, but I would rather play the other NSMB games. Also, NSMB DS is no doubt the best game in the series. It has the best level design, has unique, it has mini games and the multiplayer mode (something I unfortunately never got to try), and it was the first 2D Mario since Mario Land 2. Like, NSMBU is good, but I don’t think it should be higher than the DS version.

Good list. I'm surprised you put Wii so low on the list. I agree the game is over-rated but I personally put it in a medium tier. It's just "ok" to me. If you swapped Wii with NSMB 2 I would agree. NSMB 2 on the 3DS is just "bleh" to me. I didn't like Super Mario Land 2 as much as the first one. I'm not sure why exactly but I like Super Mario Land more. As for the "war" between 3 and World, as much as I enjoy World, I find it didn't do much extra...if any. Sure it has Yoshi and ghost houses, but the world map just seems bland. Mostly different variations of green and brown. Too many grassy plain levels and an over abundance of underground levels. Super Mario Bros. 3 is better in almost every way. I completely agree with your list. By that I mean, it is completely correct based on your opinion, as you stated. HOWEVER, I would like to point out a couple of things. 1. The *3* Super Mario Maker games (everyone forgets the one for the 3DS), came with pack-in levels designed by Nintendo. SMM 2 has like 100 levels, and a "story mode" tying them all together. I would say that it does qualify as a mainline Super Mario 2D platformer. (and they have their own unique mechanics - for example, the Shellmets - which I pray will be included in the next mainline 2D Super Mario game, regardless of it's Maker status.) 2. Super Mario Advance 4 - Super Mario Bros. 3 with the eReader levels has it's own... levels. And those levels combine elements from SMB 1, 2 (both versions of 2), 3, and World in unique ways that even with the 3 Maker games, we still haven't seen done again. (There is no grass in Super Mario Maker 2.) As such, I think that *THIS* game is better than World. 3. I didn't know about the multiplayer for NSMB for the DS. Mind blown. Thanks.
