We drove 8 hours 1 way to buy our NZ from an ARBA judge. No one local had any stock with growth rates that met the meat rabbit optimum weight chart.. We have been extremely happy with our investment. You definitely get what you pay for.

Coccidiosis can affect grow rate tremendously, so it's a good idea to address any potential underlying health issues first. This can also present with a rough-looking coat and underfilled loin or lack of muscle development. Just something to throw out there :) Looking forward to meeting you at Quail Con!

How do you treat for coccidia?
@kevywilliams3304 Жыл бұрын
Ummm well yes … you shouldn’t breed rabbits who are infected .
@TealStoneHomestead Жыл бұрын
@@kevywilliams3304 it has nothing to do with breeding infected rabbits. Coccidiosis is a parasitic infection that younger rabbits are more susceptible to being infected with, mainly when they are housed in filthy or wet conditions. It can also happen in a seemingly clean environment that is already infected. The only way to kill coccidiosis on surfaces is by cleaning with an ammonia solution, ideally letting the ammonia soak on the area for a good while.

Had I known that earlier! Our buck was supposed to be a flemish giant, but he has only the size of a new zealand and doesn't get over 8 lbs. It looks like he's a giant nz cross. My doe (NZ/Silverfox cross) had a big litter of12 babies, but they grow very slowly. They are 10 weeks old and just 3 pounds. Now I know why.

Sore hocks can be from hardware cloth which is sharper than regular welded wire cages. I never put rabbits on hardware cloth anymore. And at times, if rabbits are agitated because of dogs, monster trucks or something like that, they'll run around their cages and get their feet sore. We had a neighbor that worked on monster trucks for racing and it was an off and on thing. He kept my rabbits all messed up. Put some resting boards in there to give them a chance to get off their feet.

Thanks Chris. I’m going to try getting a new doe or two. Maybe a New Zealand and/or a Rex. My buck is a Cali and his pedigree had a few wins in it. So I don’t think he’s the problem

We are starting all over tomorrow. 😩 We are switching from “Tamuks” to Californians. Feels like we wasted a year growing out our mommas & buck only to get small kits.
@wildedibles8193 жыл бұрын
We had one doe adopt extra kits + her own 14 lived These were all tiny The adopted ones were new Zealand and she is a giant But all the kits are tiny hers a bit bigger but 15 weeks they are about 3lbs This is a thing to watch for with big litters

We have 12 week old grow outs that are small. We got the mommas & our buck from 2 local breeders that BOTH claimed they were TAMUK’s…we are e about to start all over

@@deidreanderson8968 Really?! What are y’all going with? 4 of our current Mommas are TAMUKS & 1 is a broken blue. We were so excited. Our male is a TAMUK & he is HUGE. All of our babies are small. My husband is so disappointed. I feel like we wasted a whole year. My husband is picking up new stock tomorrow.

I have a lady coming thru tomorrow from east Tenn that's bringing me the real deal. She just moved to tn from Texas. I didn't know when I bought the first time that a broken rabbit isn't a tamuk. 🥹

For what it's worth I had a second person about to sell me " Tamuks" that were broken. I know that she knew better. The first guy didn't know.

I'm in the UK, Flemish are rare here but Conti Giants aren't and I can say, throwing in some Conti DNA does wonders for speeding up grow as I have meat mutts that are NZW x Cali X SRex x Conti and they are reaching harvest weight at 7/9 weeks.

Allegedly, crossing with "giant" breeds makes the meat-to-bone ratio worse. I don't have any personal experience with it, but that's what they say.

My uncle told me that rabbits don’t taste as good if you butcher them less than 2 years old. He was right, the meat of younger rabbits tastes like Cornish cross meat chickens, not a lot of flavor and texture.

Thanks for the info! Question: I often hear people mention New Zealand whites as a great meat rabbit. We purchased blue, black & broken NZ rabbits. This may be a silly question, but are the whites better for some reason? I would appreciate any insight!
@craigslitzer48572 жыл бұрын
If your primary concern is providing meat for your family, then the color doesn't matter. Commercial rabbit meat producers tend to prefer white fur because when fur sticks to the outside of the carcass during the butchering process, white fur is less visible than other colors. For people who keep the pelts, white is sometimes preferred because it can be dyed any color during the tanning process. For strictly meat, the rabbit's color is irrelevant.

Yes giants are slow...new Zealand are faster to grow out When you breed them together you will get faster and slower grow outs
