BTW, this episode reminds me of the stories my dad used to tell me. He raised fancy and homing pigeons. He'd sell them to the feed store for feed. Then he'd go out back and let them out, and they'd fly home. Then he'd resell them. He also raised Nuns, birds with sharp, black & white markings. He used to paint the black with ink to even out the markings. He was a real character. I miss me old da.

Hi, I got 11 quails and usually I get 5-6 eggs daily. I have tried incubating and follow the process you have on youtube but the hatch rate is terrible. each time i put 56 eggs and the result was 2 to 3 chick. not sure what i am missing here? I heard eggs should be fertile so I have waited to grow my chicks and now i am trying again to incubate. hopefully this time it will be better. Any suggestion?
@Slightlyrednecked5 жыл бұрын
If you haven't already I would suggest getting a couple of thermometers and calibrating them (make sure they are calibrated and accurate first). Put them in your incubator and verify that it is reading the temperature correctly. Most of the time, a poor hatch rate is tracked back to the incubation temperature being off. I hope that helps.
@singleman19866 жыл бұрын
Chris.....Serious question.....Does amortizing the cost of the incubator and hatching/brooding electricity factor in? NOT being "contrary" here. Just curious how YOU do the math. I know full well I could buy, (garbage), food a bit cheaper than what it costs to raise my own, but if I factor in the yearly cost of having/using a vehicle to go to the market, I'm WAY ahead. (Try explaining THAT to family and 'friends'). They do NOT want to listen when I tell them I only paid a quarter for the last crock pot full of rabbit I "harvested" on my place. I stopped giving my Freedom Ranger chickens purchased feed years ago and just let 'em run wild. Literally FREE eggs and meat. Can we do the same with quail?
@Slightlyrednecked6 жыл бұрын
Well i didn't factor in the cost of initial supplies or electricity (which only factors in during incubation and 2 weeks of brooding). I wish you could just free range quail but it would be incredibly hard to keep them from running off and even then they would all most likely get eaten by something pretty quickly. Sounds like you have a good set up.

I don't have much luck with selling rabbits but the birds seem to always sell at least enough to cover my cost.
@iwantosavemoney6 жыл бұрын
Slightly Rednecked then can you not just increase the amount of birds to carry the cost of the rabbits
@Slightlyrednecked6 жыл бұрын
Possibly. But there is a point where the market just isn't there. I don't think i could sell that many birds in my area.

Can I use foxtail millet bran for quails with other proteins? I get a lot from other bird's food waste!
@Slightlyrednecked4 жыл бұрын
Millet is fine to use as part of their regular diet. Like you said, they will need other things too though.

Sorry! I asked abt the bran! I get lot from other bird's food waste! That contains 20% millets and 80%brans! What can I do with that? Don't want to waste those 20%

Please pray for me. 💜💕❤️🙏🌈 Pray that I can start a homestead and rescue animals. Pray I can train the dogs I rescue to become service dogs as ptsd dogs that I can donate to veterans.
I had a system where I use some dinner scraps, catch some catfish, put them in my compost bin, open sides of compost bin to release a plague of maggots. Sit back, grab a glass of fermented quail foam (after determining if they identify as: male | female | democrat) and watch the poultry enjoy those maggots like it's 1999.

hi,,i have 75 quails..they never want to stop eating whenever i feed them they eat a lot and just become replete for 1 hour or less then again they become hungry and act as if they did not get food for 2-3 days...they want to eat all the time 24 hours and they never get full or replete just few minutes...and the second problem they try to not eat vegetables or any food.they only want to eat pellet..and third problem they are so nasty even sometimes they ignore food and act they are hungry they jump and fly to me and to my face..and many times i got so dissapoint and angry i catched them and throw them to wall with force..even the eggs i just receive 1 or 2 pieces a day..over 50 are females among 75 ..do you have any solution for these nonsense quails..
@Slightlyrednecked5 жыл бұрын
Well, the first thing I would suggest is to not through them against the wall. If you don't have a proper cage I would build one. They do need access to food 24 hours a day. And they need about 14 hours a day of light to lay consistently.
@davidpiazza71745 жыл бұрын
What you may have are bobwhite quail. These are quail that produce small white eggs. It takes them about 18 weeks before they reach laying status. These birds usually are in the wild and they are very fast. They don't grow to be very big birds. What you are probably looking for are the Japanese Coturnix quail. They start laying at 6 weeks and at 8 weeks they reach mature status almost a pound. their eggs are spotted and are a little larger than the Bobwhite eggs. I hope this was helpful.
@davidpiazza71745 жыл бұрын
Look up coturnix versus Bobwhite.

Chris, some other people have suggested saving their egg shells, to re-feed for protein. Sounds a bit cannibalistic. How do you feel about that?
@JasmineCherie6 жыл бұрын
I feed duck eggs back to ducks..it's only cannibalism if the egg is incubated. An egg is just an ovulation.

@@mayhemschild Your tag name is "mayhem" so i feel kinda stupid replying to you; however, here we go: the video author says: "You could raise mealworms, fodder and other plants for your quail to eat, but that's all to hard and I don't bother with that..." He goes on to say how he sells his birds to make extra money for feed. WTF!?!?! people like i, have come to get tips on what he deems to challenging. What happens when the lights go out and you can't get on Craigslist? How do you feed your birds if you can't get the money from the bird sales? Smarten up man; people want solutions to learn how to survive the apocalypse, not navigate craigslist. THIS VIDEO IS CLICK BAIT to anyone interested in solutions outside of the prescribed system.

@@nomochances777 i get what you mean. his solution to get free food is to buy food lol. kinda like bidens build back better program costing $0 because all the trillions would be paid for by taxation lmao. but you might look into a movable quail cage you could place ontop of long grasses and they can eat the seeds. maybye with a small waterer with a bucket on top. maybye anchored for security from predators, or maybe a mesh bottom but idk how that'd work with the grass. maybye, best of luck.

@@mayhemschild That's not what feeding your quail for free means. He pays a feed store to get feed for his quail, none of the feed is free.
@LilacDaisy23 жыл бұрын
Ah, so they have much higher feed needs than chickens.
@joshbeasley3112 жыл бұрын
From my understanding, it works out pretty close, if not equal to chickens when you account for the higher protein content of the quail meat as well as greater nutritional value of quail eggs.

I didn’t find this misleading. I guess it depends on how you interpret it. If you sell the birds, you get the money to buy the feed, it’s kind of like getting it free, like trading birds for feed. I like this idea and am going to try it. Feed is costly where I live. If I can get a way to offset costs, I think it’s worth a try.
@abseiduk Жыл бұрын
Its misleading but it is a very practical and realistic solution, there is no magic bullet in this game.
