Sat with Slim around a campfire in Katherine in his last year. That was a very special night. He was a genius.

Actually after all this time I should mention that my two sons were there, and we were eight around the campfire. We had driven a long way, and by chance went to that campground. The people there told us that we should go, but they didn't give any clues. We were still new Australians, but we knew that this was extraordinarily special. We saw him go on to do the Olympics, and spread the word to a multitude. But to me Slim epitomised a special night in the outback with just a few mates. I will always remember the blazing fire, the cloudless night, and the night sky, and a genius making his peace with the country.

@@alanjeary7317 Hello Alan, Alan was my Late father's Name🙂and it's my Only sons Name too. So, I can just tell that you're a Nice Bloke Alan,!😊and I don't, and have Never Patronized People Alan, it's just that Dad was my Idol, and I idolize my Son! AND I Absolutely Idolized Slim my friend!!🙂and so Did my father, and I went too 1 of Slims concerts in our home town of Coonamble in N.S.W, But!! When I asked Dad to come with me, he declined my offer!!😮and just said..'I've seen him so many times before Pete', and I would honestly rather just Listen to him, on all of the records and Tapes that U and I have of his, and, just 'Use my Imagination' BECAUSE he 'Always Paints a picture', of whatever he's singing about Pete!! Anyway, I came home from the Concert, with an Autographed Poster I had of Slim, With ' Too Alan, from your mate Slim Dusty' And Dads only, an Elder Sister, My Aunty Linda was visiting, and having breakfast with Dad, the next morning, and when I showed Dad the Poster, He just said, 'Hmm..very good Mate!' And before I could say anything else, Auntly Linda said..'Will YOU tell the poor little bugger? Or will I Alan!!' So, Dad told me that when him and Slim, were both 19, and Dad was still living in Yetman NSW, Where he Grew up, Slim was with a Travelling show, with Gordon Parsons I think, and Shirley Toms, And, it'd been raining for weeks, and the McIntyre River rose, and Flooded and cut the roads off, out of Yetman see? So, Shirley and Gordon stayed for the night at my Uncle Jacks home, and Dad invited Slim Dusty to stay with him and his family!! BUT!I still don't know if Slim Dusty DID stay with Dads Family for the night, BUT! I can tell you, That Slim Dusty turned up at the local pub, which was, and Still is, the 'Codfish Hotel'!! AND Sat down on the stool next too Dad!! And Slims only REALLY Famous song at the time in 1946, was 'When the Rain Tumbles down in July'!! So, after shouting one another about 20 beers!! as Dad put it!!🙂Dad told Slim,he'd buy him a bottle of Rum, if He'd sing 'Rain Tumbles'? And Slim replied,' I'll go and get my guitar Alan, and I'll sing it for u anyway!!🙂But!! U don't have to buy me a bottle of Rum Mate!!😊but, Dad DID buy him a bottle of Rum Mate, and told me, when Slim Dusty came back in with his guitar, And tuned it too suit, u could've heard a Pin drop!!, as the at least 100 PPL in the old Pub fell silent! Because they ALL wanted too hear Slim Dusty sing Alan!!🙂and, after he sang the song, Dad said the Applause was deafening Pete!!😮and then He sang about 5 more songs too!! So, Slim said too Dad, I'll SHARE that Bottle of Rum with u mate!!😊which they did Alan!! AND even though I think, it was 6 o'clock closing time, The local Policeman 'Turned a blind eye' And let the pub stay open until 4 am the following morning Alan!! Because the local Policeman got just as Drunk as everyone else in the Pub did!!🙂and, I just couldn't believe that Dad had Never told me about it before Alan!! But, Dad NEVER big noted himself mate!!😊and he was a very brilliant man in his own Right!! AND was a Wheat farmer for 25yrs, Until he became A self taught, Air conditioning Engineer, and a self taught Mechanical engineer, and a self taught Welder, and, Dads welds NEVER broke Alan!! AND, he was very well known for that Alone my friend!! I did feel just a bit sad, and offended that Dad had Never told me about it before Alan☹but, at least I did find out about his meeting and, very big drinking session with Slim Dusty Alan!! AND I still feel so very proud to tell people about it Alan, Because Slim Dusty was a genius alright Mate!! I appoligse for the long post Alan, but, it was worth telling u about!!🙂 And, I hope, and feel certain, that U love Australia Alan!! As I THINK u said, u were a 'New Australian' When u and Your 2 sons,met Slim Dusty, All the very best too Your loved ones Alan, Kind regards Pete.

I'm an American and frankly, just discovering Slim Dusty. When I ran across the video of his state funeral it was quite a surprise. Those aren't just thrown for anyone. He was an icon, not just any old very popular country singer. I'm listening to as much of his music as I can find and so far, not a bad song in the bunch. He's like Hank Williams Sr., when he wrote a song or sang one he could do no wrong and unlike Hank who was a wreck of a man in his private life, Slim is someone whose life you could point point out to your children as an example to follow. Way to go Australia !!!! G'Day from the USA.

Every time I listen to Slim I think of my childhood on a dairy farm on the north coast of NSW, listening to his songs as we milked the cows. I have lived in the city now for the past fifty years but I still listen to Slims's songs and dream of those days gone by.

Right On !!, griminisivic. Old Slim was Australia's genuine version of America's great legend, Hank. And even more - he was also our Slim Whitman, and a dozen more of America's greatest country / folk / bluegrass artists & storytellers. But at the same time .. Slim was uniquely Australian, and a unique Aussie music legend. We will not see men of his stature & calibre again, I believe.

@caseysmith544 2 жыл бұрын
@@keithschmidt6418 Yes I like his stuff It is from the Early to Classic Country Era or if made later in 1980's to 1990's like those styles. It is cool to hear Music outside USA that feels so familiar in a genera. A few of songs are like here, in South Dakota they have on and a bit off the Native Lakota/Dakota Tribes Reservations the 7 different tribes that on most they have wild dogs called Res Dogs Res short for Reservation Dogs that are similar to the Dingo in style but actually closer to the most common Coyote in North America. This from the first hit for Dusty, Bar With No Beer with the Wild Dingo's Call. I can imagine the Truck Driver songs, Like Bent Axle Bob very well. Some people Doing Cattle Ranching in South Dakota have old smaller semi-trucks like the story song or big cattle trailers that are not in the best of shape they need to replace or throw to the scrap yards/use for extra spare parts on a new of the same model when parts are needed for the new one. Lights on the Hill I see some parts going into the River valleys of South Dakota after being on flat ground for miles they forget going into the zone out and have this happen to them.

When Slim sings the verse-line .. "He sat there Hillbilly Pickin, on a cracked & battered Gibson .. & the songs that he sang were all his .. every song told a story ... " - I feel sure that he is really singing about himself, in his OWN entirely-legitimate self-image. For, born & raised in the Sugarloaf Range hill-country, in the mountain-hinterland up behind Kempsey NSW, he WAS real country.

I won a poetry contest recently, in which at the end of each verse I quoted lines that had already been written by others. The judge said that, with those lines, I had generated an "Americana." One of those lines was, "He sat there hill-billy picking on a cracked and battered Gibson." If only he was an American.
