YGE is using outdated templates. The Batter Up MV doesn't offer something new aside from the members. The music and aesthetic has been recycled from year 2010. YGE is just wasting their potential much like how JYPE is doing to NMIXX. I'm not sure if the producers are living under a rock but YGE's current dance style and music is just some hand-me-downs from the senior artists. They have not innovated any new sound or MV aesthetics. The MVs from the recent YGE artists are just superficial or materialistic, they don't even tell a story like MVs of Newjeans. If YGE is still considering their company as a hip-hop house, they should have taken a look at how XG has produced new sound, dance styles, and aesthetics. YGE is slowly killing their own artistry.

Wasting potential? They just debuted how is this wasting potential? You are talking like they are 1-2 years old group. They already have Pre-Debut song DREAM which charted billboard when released. Was it the best DEBUT? NO, but it was a decent debut, a YG debut to be precise as it was to show that it's a YG group. And it was a hip-hop song with hip-hop choreo with SWAG which YG are know for..where XG dances are more like Street Hip-hop group with raw energy. Every MV doesn't need to tell story, Sure NJ Ditto was beautiful done but that doesn't mean everyone should throw away their things and do same as NJ. This Debut is to introduce the Group not to tell a script movie. If you want "story" listen to their DREAM which were their story about debuting. And YGE is 80% IDOL 20% Hip-hop after Bigbang debuted under them. YGE is now IDOL focused more and the term YG DNA is used because of little flare of Hip-hop which they still have. I'm not defending Baemon as I think this group will be best suited for R&B focused more as the group have alot potential in that than POP. And Debut was good but nothing masterclass.

I agree about the point that YG should prolly start exploring the artistry side for their artists/groups to let them actually showcase their talent and skills. Clearly people are starting to not eat up the YG formula milk anymore otherwise there wouldn't be this current controversy in the first place. The fact that this song is not even charting in Melon is a huge jaw dropper.

YGEs fault is the fact they stopped their recent groups from having control of their artistry as they did for BigBang, Winner and iKON... Treasure is a mix at this point but the girl groups music and image is the same just with different talents and personalities.

@@x.Rhymiie.x groups like Bigbang, Winner and iKON all produced their own music from the very beginning of debut so they clearly had their own identity right off the bat. But YG girl groups such as 2NE1 and BlackPink have always been produced by Teddy mainly together with other YG producers. CL only got to release her own song I believe after 4-5years of her debut which is crazy. I just think their producing team needs to switch thing up at this point cos the cookies are stale.

Now, people are saying the same, 😂😂😂 Babymonster look up to Blackpink, and Jennie and Lisa mentored them, so, the support from YGE is all in, and the world got curious because Blackpink participated to their introduction, how can you beat that, and now the Blinks supports Babymonster, not only because Jennie and Lisa are not lying in saying they are good, but, because Babymonster are all talented. Why should AKMU be saddled with this group. It's YG's job to hire producers for this or any new group. They have money. Leave AKMU alone, your comments about the brothers hair is unwarranted. You don't like their looks, but their voices and talent are so good that they should be used as music teachers for children. Baby Monster is another all girl group who is being exploited when they aren't even old enough to take calculus. By the way, Baby Monster is the most ridiculous name for a group when they all are 21 years old or 25 or 30. YG BM is a miss.

The kindest thing I can say about this Is it a bunch of teenagers didn't have any ideas so they plagiarize the works of others in paragraph form put it into a blender and called it their own. Derivative is 5 steps up from where this is. This is blatant copying. There is nothing unique or rememberable about this work. It would have been better if they had taken the Weird Al approach to copying someone and made a parody song instead. That at least would have been rememberable and possibly amusing. This makes me sad The group of very talented young people have such poor leadership around them that they didn't realize that copying someone else's art is not creating art. And I realized that it is a flagrant attempt to get the Western media to cover their artist but we are rich with unique music here. The western music scene is full of unique music We don't need copycat Korean music. The same reason we aren't deeply resonating with Jungkook's latest music. If We wanted Scooter Timberflakey PDiddy abusers well we would go right to the source we would listen to P Diddy and Timberlake and Usher. That stale has been sound doesn't work for any of us. Pass.

I personally love this song. I am here for the MUSIC and in my opinion they are targeting a younger audience who probably don’t know much about kpop rather than the already kpop fans or older fans. This is only the beginning, it’s their first song and it’s obviously that they want to appeal to the younger generation because they have minors in the group. They are very young and they can continue developing their color and having a versatile repertoire in their music. Btw the guy from AKMU also participated in this song. BLACKPINK also had a pink school bus in their debut 😂 I think many are being too judgmental and making comparisons not only with BLACKPINK but also with other groups. Gladly there are still people out there who don’t care about the comparisons and keep playing the song because it’s super catchy and a banger. I guess I’m not the “usual” kpop fan since I don’t care about concepts and all I care is for music. Music is subjective and if their song is not for you then just don’t listen to it. So simple.

I have to be honest... I've always found it a little ironic that Yang Hyun Suk gets most of the blame for YG's decline even though that all happened AFTER he was basically forced from his leadership role. I think people that became kpop fans during or after Burning Sun don't realize that when he was still CEO and actively involved with the artists on a day-to-day basis, YG ran smoothly and their image as a company was actually pristine. Whatever you think of him in terms of legal issues, fair enough. But I have to say the downfall of YGE, in my opinion, was likely in large part because of his absence... including the mass-exodus of artists that thrived when he still led the company. When former artists talk about him and their time in YG under his leadership, it's almost always positive. CL was an exception after her proposed solo album fell through (I think that whole project was just way too ambitious for the time) but even she's changed her tune since then.
@TEAM__POSEID0N Жыл бұрын
Actually, I don't believe there has been any point in time when Yang Hyun Suk was not the top boss at YGE. People get confused about that because he did indeed stop his public appearances and interviews during the Burning Sun and FX violation scandals (and didn't really start appearing in public again as the top boss until the pre-debut promotional videos for Baby Monster started coming out in May). But, behind the scenes and out of the public eye, I'm sure he all along still kept his office in his building and everyone, including the CEO(s) has been answering to him and required to follow whatever instructions or orders he has wanted to give in any matter of importance. People forget that the CEO (including his younger brother YMS and his long-term employee Hwang) literally work for him as his employees and were hand-picked by him to handle the boring and tedious aspects of management that he didn't want to bother with. YHS stepped away from the formal CEO position long before the scandals happened. But he was always still the top boss (as founder and holder of the largest block of shares and the person who controlled the board of directors). I'm quite sure that he never stopped being the ultimate boss who has the final say and as much say as he wants in any important decisions concerning artists, groups, production direction, etc. We just didn't see him in public acting in that capacity or speaking for the company. When the Baby Monster pre-debut promotions (consisting of 61 videos) started rolling out in May, we saw Yang Hyun Suk in almost every video. That's just because his legal problems seemed to be behind him and he felt it was safe for him to begin stepping into the spotlight again, instead of just ruling from the shadows. Now that the appeals court reversed the lower court's decision and decided that YHS was guilty of the crimes he was charged with, YHS has stepped back into the shadows, which is why we don't see him anywhere talking about the debut or hosting debut-related events (which was probably what he planned to do before the appeals court somewhat unexpectedly reversed the lower-court decision). That's also probably why the debut-related promotions seem so anemic for the group. They probably had all kinds of plans and videos and things prepared, that involved YHS being prominently featured. It's not just Ahyeon who is missing from the debut. It's also YHS.
@peppyluscious Жыл бұрын
@@TEAM__POSEID0N Listen, even you know this but "I don't believe...", "I'm sure...", "that's also probably..." are conjecture statements. That's the majority of your argument, mere speculation. YHS only has a 25% share in YGE; 28% combined with his brother. These are not people who have anywhere near a majority say in YGE's operations. Furthermore he's been involved in legal turmoil that preclude his day-to-day presence in YGE. If you want to get into the muck of that, I'd be happy to as a law student, but it's certainly noteworthy that the defendant is currently imprisoned for her own crimes; the nature of the trial regarded her accusations of intimidation; and in the end YHS was given a suspended sentence, not jail time as implied here.
@TEAM__POSEID0N Жыл бұрын
@@peppyluscious Of course it's conjecture to some extent, probably less so than your own conjecture (unless you actually work at YGE, which I doubt). For one thing, it appears that, "as a law student" (nice attempt to appeal to your own perceived authority), you still haven't developed enough familiarity with corporate power dynamics to understand how "only" a 25% share, combined with the shares owned by relatives and close friends, is certainly enough to have a controlling interest (also combined with the fact that the majority of the board members owe their positions to YHS, as well as the fact that the CEOs (co-representative directors in actual Korean parlance) were hand-picked by YHS and are obviously very loyal to him. Meanwhile, the majority of shares are divided and dispersed into the hands of numerous and varied small shareholders and retail investors who lack the organization, unity and day-to-day involvement (both structurally and constitutionally) to challenge, second-guess or override the managerial decisions made by the largest shareholder, in cooperation with his hand-picked CEOs. The concept of largest shareholder and major shareholders in terms of actual control are so important that an entire regulatory framework exists to provide transparency on such holdings, and their interrelationships, for listed companies such as YGE. In numerical terms, the vast majority of shareholders are individuals and entities who each hold very small percentages, in many cases much less than 1%. In aggregate, it would seem like they would have control. But of course in reality that's nonsense. They don't have meetings and leaders of their own. Even in annual shareholders meetings (the meetings being completely controlled by the BoD and managers) where all shareholders are given the opportunity to vote on a limited number of proposals related to very general structural or organizational matters, the small shareholders (who only in aggregate hold the majority of shares) are rarely united or organized as a block for anything and tend to follow the recommendations of the managers. I already understand the nature and particulars of his current legal situation and I was explaining what a suspended sentence means to other people long before our conversation here. I did not imply that he was in jail. When I said he was "missing" from the debut, I was referring to the fact that he again has felt the need to step back into the shadows and avoid any public appearances in relation to the debut due to the embarrassment and bad publicity. The gist of what I was saying was that he has been in control all along. He is still in control. The main difference in perception is due to the periods when he has found it necessary to stay out of public sight versus the times when he felt that he could be in the spotlight as the top boss. He was feeling confident about public appearances during the pre-debut promotions and likely would have planned to be involved in debut promotions, with interviews and more videos in which he would appear. That all would have to have been scrapped pursuant to the appeals court decision. It's easy to see in the pre-debut Baby Monster videos, most of which were recorded long before May of this year, when they started being uploaded for the public. It's easy to see that, last year too, when for all everyone in the public knew he was not doing anything at YG, he was actually supervising and controlling everything related to the development of the new group.

we will not be able to see their "own" talent if yg stays on their comfort zone.....all these comments are not against these girls but how viewers are fed up with the same music/tune/concept etc....the "debut" is supposed to "introduce" these girls but we just see other established groups performing...yg might step out and just "change" a little hopefully on the next but "maintaining" a change is knock on wood... congratulations to these girls on their debut 🎉

9:16 huh? Sitting in a chair in a fur jacket isn't exclusive to some show. How can you call that a knockoff when that's so basic to begin with? Also twice doesnt own a baseball theme. Some of the things you mentioned are not owned by one group or another. I don't particularly like the song or video at all. But to say that something so basic like a fur coat or a bus is knocked off from this show or this group.... That makes no sense whatsoever and is REALLY reaching. Most of the themes and motifs used in the video are unoriginal to begin with so claiming it's knocked off from a specific video when that exact motif was used in a thousand videos before THAT video you're referring to is just misrepresentation. You should just say it reminds you of this other song or this other video. Not it's "knocked off" because that's not true.

Guess it's hard to get a new BTS -- RM and Suga write their own music and that changes everything. They were also underdogs, they also really allowed ARMY to follow along with them as they trained, as they developed as brothers over time. Their process took years and this is something that is so hard to recreate. Probably why Stray Kids is doing ok because Bang Chan writes music, Hyunjin is very creative/artistic (dances very well and also paints), and Felix's very unique voice as well as his dancing, his visuals, and the fact he has had quite a bit going on in terms of social media (remember his ASMR videos?) -- there is plenty in social media going on in that group which seems like they will have good longevity as well. I haven't been into K-pop long and I could already tell how thrown together that was. K-pop is so crowded that it takes not sounding like everyone else to have staying power. YG did them no favors making them sound like BP Jr. with a lyrically weak track on top of it. With all the delays with the debut and saying they wanted to pick the perfect song, YG still gave them no musical identity to build on and somehow managed to rush tbe video. I too hope they can get a better creative team. As for the sets and such, I've seen the same sets so many times in MVs. The Paradise Cafe is a running joke at this point. And stylists all copy each other. They probably did reuse a dress. Not great, but not the worst thing. From a visual standpoint -- and visuals are a huge part of K-pop -- there were bigger issues with the overall design as dissident as the song. Dragging your nails to a lyric about stinging like a bee? What?

Just because they sound the same they were created by the same people not like they look the same they are twins or relatives as you can see even with the same concept if you apply your own identity you can create your own style that is what YG trying to do.If the things aren't broken why fix it. It was not easy to change what you done traditionally.As a YG stan we are the only one who could understand this because Out of all kpop entertainment only YG has maintained their trademarks/identity concept and all others lose and just follow the trend. That's why Baby monster is hated at this exact moment. when a key Korean member cannot participate. The early debut project seems to be only a small part of YG's plan (who knows). But one thing is that these children don't deserve to think negative things. They are only 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 years old. And this song is not at the bottom like what many Koreans reacted to. Someone please introduce Kpop idol music to those 61 million people. Baby monster just flop😂by Korean said .

i agree with everything i felt it was BP the second. nothing new at all and the MV´s is always the same for girl groups i feel like. it´s always a blank screen with props and proper light. you know studio vibe. but with new jeans they actually filmed outside and i think even in foreign countries. it was just new and Unique even the music was totally new. and that is what they should have done with these girls they have the talent to be great individual artists. but i also feel like there may be to many talented people so they dont get to shine and grow more. it feels like a waste of talent. normally a group grow and get better, just look at BTS who all the vocalists haven´t sang before they became trainees. and jimin didn´t even got vocal training before debuting. but look at them now. they all grew so much because they had the freedom to do so. they felt they had opportunities to do solo stuff and they changed their style so much so that each song a new member could shone more. at first it was mainly hip hop because of the rappers who was better. but now they do all sorts of genres. they are really free in terms of what music they want to make.

Did YGE personally wrong you? I am not sure how a girl group that just debuted can be this upsetting to someone lol They are no more formulaic or manufactured than what seems to be your favorite band newJeans. You are entertaining but seem more conspiratorial and tinfoil hat-y than usual.

I’ve been watching you since you began, love your videos! Off subject, but I wish you would do a segment about skinship amongst Korean young men and women. I believe it is misunderstood completely in the west, and fuels a lot of shippers and hate in the fandom. Also, with enlistment around the corner, Jimin especially is getting a lot of toxic attention. Thanks for considering this topic.

Wow that was beautifully produced and executed by the girls, but the vontent was underwhelming! I watched this on my way back from a gig at Heaven in London - DJ Pool, Blase & Gemini. @ Area are doing a great job (whether you like Jay Park or not) of letting their artists shine authentically. Although @ area nominally skews towards rap I would say Big Naughty, DAWN & Gemini are producing some great albums. I am looking forward to seeing what Mirani and Hyuna release next. I've also been lucky enough to see B.I, The Rose and Kang Daniel this year in London - they also all seem to be making good music in their own styles outside of the big agencies. I think the big agencies have a lot to learn in order to stay relevant with the groups they keep churning out. They seem to throw stuff at the wall in the hopes that something will stick. Some of it is getting so tired. Surely the public will stop caring at some point ignoring all the hype for debuts which would be catastrophic. I'm exploring so much more 'indie' music than I ever did before. You're right the members of BabyMonster seem to be individually talented let's hope they find their direction. I really like AKMU too and think it would be great to see how they could help shape BabyMonster. I'm a big fan of K-pop and want to it to evolve & remain successful for generations to come.

I keep seeing feeling/seeing CL in Ruka and one girl (Chiquita, I think) kinda looked like my (America) Kpop girl AleXa for a second. And not to be mean, I got dizzy watching the video. Too many things going on. Too many...themes? Nothing flowed for me. I couldn't concentrate on the girl's vibe or song. It's like that one person wearing 4 different patterns in 1 outfit. First, they need not start a 'shade off' with New Jeans. Get a few bops under their belt, get some traction, BECOME BABY MONSTER. If you're talented, the rest will handle itself. These ladies have talent, they just need to be able to breathe and do what they do best. I watched New Jeans the other night and was amazed at how much they have grown. B.Monster can be right there with them, if and when they get a chance to find the lane they want to drive in. When they find it, the fun will begin (with the right guidance, of course)! I want to see ALL GIRL GROUPS SUCCEED, so YG, DON'T F THIS UP! LOL!

Can someone please explain what on earth 'Batter up' means as I know only one answer as is Assult and Battery' which is a criminal term here in the UK that will get you arrested charge and likely result in you serving a prison sentence. As it means to attack someone with a blunt instrument eg taking something like a plank of wood, cricket bat, baseball bat, iron bar to beat someone with. Therefore to 'Batter up' is to beat someone up with a blunt object.
@Sunset553 Жыл бұрын
It’s a sports term in baseball. It means it’s the next player’s turn. The next player comes to the home plate holding the bat and the announcer and crowd can shout “batter up”! to indicate the next play is about to start. It makes more of a statement when a team takes their turn, so it’s like BabyMonster having their debut. This video is their first time up “at bat”. Yes, you hit the ball as hard as you can, so “to batter” and the crime of “battery” have to do with hitting things or people. The liquid for making pancakes is also called batter. Language is fun

Hi Sean! I've watched all of the pre-debut videos as they released and these girls are talented. I will admit that I was underwhelmed with this song. Many of the girls have voices that fit better into the R&B genre and I was hoping that is the direction they were going to take with the group. They would have been able to still utilize Ruka & Asa as rappers in an R&B group too. I think R&B has an untapped/underexposed market in South Korea. Jay Park was once interviewed and he admitted that his fans miss the smooth singing side of him. Taeyang's latest album has more of an R&B sound and his singles were well received. Just my thoughts. Sorry for the long comment! 😅 BTW, I can be called a YG Stan.. I'm a fan of all their artists. Sad to see iKon leave..and now Winner is starting military. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next year for YG. Although they better not try to replace Blackpink w Babymonster. I just don't think they will reach that caliber.

I too find this group to be just a copycat of groups past. Kind of feels like when highschoolers talent show. The video was pretty but the song is BORING. I would never just listen to it without watching the MV.
@HailToTheMeep Жыл бұрын
How is your view count only 12 but you have almost 700 likes 😮 Anyway. The last time YG broke boundaries was when Big Bang debuted no? Even 2ne1 was created based on the Big Bang template. That’s really all YG have I suppose?
@peppyluscious Жыл бұрын
The view/like disparity isn't an uncommon thing. Videos that initially get a lot of views quickly basically go through a phase where youtube checks that the views are "legitimate" (not bots, not people watching the same video on repeat), so they don't all show up right away and get added in chunks once they pass the review process. Funny enough k-pop was pretty heavily responsible for that protocol, after fans figured out they could basically inflate MV views for visibility/popularity.

Definitely agree with your insights. Song choice terrible for debut. The mix of individual wardrobes and the matching outfits was bad - stick to one or the other. XG did matching outfits, but it was so stylish and retro so it stood out. Hopefully their next video will show something different

On one hand, you can definitely see similarities with other YG group productions. And I agree that YG needs to loosen it's cookie cutter approach to "branding" everything in what the company thinks is the essential YG look and feel, so much so that it becomes overly predictable and repetitive. I agree that going more toward greater artistry in terms of musical diversity would be a huge improvement. For example, I know that most of the artists in groups are capable of much more intricate and varied styles (something you get a glimpse of on Blackpink's b-side tracks, which many fans actually prefer musically over the title tracks). OTOH, however, some critics get carried away with the game of "this is similar to that" gotcha game (and the usual haters/fans of rival groups exaggerate the hell out of it), which can be done with literally each and every Kpop music video out there, if anyone is so inclined. I mean how many music videos feature scenes with heavy black and dark crimson color schemes. If you see one, it'll take less than 5 or 10 minutes to find a predecessor with something "similar". How many have sporty themes? How many of them have cheerleader-type scenes and costumes? How many have scenes in gritty urban street areas with graffiti-laden walls in the background? All in all, it was a reasonably successful debut. The current criticisms of BM actually include talking points that are themselves recycled and reused for almost every YG group release...going all the way back to, and including as targets, Big Bang and 2NE1. Talking about "the formula", the "costumes", etc. I remember SNSD fans ragging on 2NE1 comebacks and claiming that their "girl crush" theme was getting "stale" and they relied to heavily on the same formula. (And of course SNSD was not immune to similar flak coming at them about their style and concept). I remember when Lee Hi debuted. Her debut song was a massive hit. But the music video was just kind of weird. Instead of doing something that fit her and her personality and unique style, it just looked like they were trying to fit her into a series of sets intended for a 2NE1 music video, with the same visual concepts even for her outfits. Basically, BM's debut is good enough that they can build on it and do better going forward. But it wasn't so great that it gave them a huge momentum boost. As a result, it kind of leaves them in a neutral position. They scored some points and lost some points...and now the comeback will be as important or more important than the debut was in determining their future.

I can’t even with any other K-pop besides BTS (and Epik High and Seo Taiji, and Balming Tiger- all of whom I know of thanks to BTS). But especially the girl groups are hardest for me to stomach. I’m glad you can see some artistry because I can only see formulaic rehash. And why do the girl groups seem so utterly gender-objectified? So, much as I can’t find anything to like about them, I really value your reaction/interpretation to help me better understand the whole context. But I’m still not buying it.
