Absolutely. I see Karl as a whole real person, completely separate from BBT. That doesn’t happen often with roles, not quite in this way. BBT created this gorgeous character seemingly from something outside himself. As many times as I watch it, which is every other year or so, I never see anyone but Karl. This is truly one of my top two fave films ever made. And because I grew up in the south and knew people similar to him and the other characters, it likely hits me in a different way than it hits people who grew up elsewhere.

@Alicemudgarden90Lived in South Carolina for over sixty years. We notice that northern transplants have a noticeably different walk and faster pace when they first move down here. A few years in the heat and humidity and they learn why we tend to take it easy and move at a slower pace. It's not as noticeable now as it used to be before air conditioning was common. I was 13 when we got our first window fan. LOL I had moved out and started my family when my father bought their first window air conditioner. We had two channels on our TV and it was in black and white. I didn't owned a color TV until several years after leaving home. When I was a kid everything was closed on Sunday. Back then you had very few choices in occupations. If you had land you farmed. If not, you went to work in the textile mill, grocery store, or pumped gas at the service stations.

My favorite line from one of my favorite movies. " I studied on killing you. Studied on it quite a bit. But I reckon there ain't no need for it if all you're gonna do is sit there in that chair. You'll be dead soon enough and the world 'll be shut of ya."

Whenever I see this movie it makes me want to live a simple life in a rural town in Arkansas.

Until you actually do, then the realities and difficulties of the situation sit in. Nice place to visit but living there sucks. My parents live in a smaller town in Arkansas than this, less than 2K people there. Great to visit but glad to not have to permanently stay.
