Absolutely. I see Karl as a whole real person, completely separate from BBT. That doesn’t happen often with roles, not quite in this way. BBT created this gorgeous character seemingly from something outside himself. As many times as I watch it, which is every other year or so, I never see anyone but Karl. This is truly one of my top two fave films ever made. And because I grew up in the south and knew people similar to him and the other characters, it likely hits me in a different way than it hits people who grew up elsewhere.

@Alicemudgarden90Lived in South Carolina for over sixty years. We notice that northern transplants have a noticeably different walk and faster pace when they first move down here. A few years in the heat and humidity and they learn why we tend to take it easy and move at a slower pace. It's not as noticeable now as it used to be before air conditioning was common. I was 13 when we got our first window fan. LOL I had moved out and started my family when my father bought their first window air conditioner. We had two channels on our TV and it was in black and white. I didn't owned a color TV until several years after leaving home. When I was a kid everything was closed on Sunday. Back then you had very few choices in occupations. If you had land you farmed. If not, you went to work in the textile mill, grocery store, or pumped gas at the service stations.

You ain't kidding. Movies these days are seriously shit. That's not just me being grumpy now that I'm 30 either. I love almost all genre of movies from black and white 40s to about the year 2010. There were plenty of greats. Everything since then has been pretty bad and tbh movies were on a bad decline since around the time the 90s ended. Now they're unwatchable. Nothing but stale PC superheroes and rinse and repeat romantic "comedies." It's a shame really but at least we always have classics like this one!

I've heard many slang terms for mental institutions but until this movie, I had never heard "nervous hospital" before. I was a lot younger when this movie came out so when Carl said it the first time, it made me laugh, but it stuck with me over the years. I now live fairly close to a mental institution in my state. Every time I drive by the main entrance, I instantly hear Carl's voice saying "nervous hospital". It's much nicer than some of the other derogatory terms I heard growing up...

Saw this in the theater when it first came out. I thought it was a horror movie bc of the title. Was pleasantly surprised how good it was. Have watched it, prob 20 times since.

"I killed some people a while back"...that is some heavy stuff to lay on a kid...especially one that showed ypu exactly where he lives. And yet, Frank showed no fear or judgement, just an honest curiosity and gratefullness towards Carl.

My grandma's brother got put in the nervous hospital for a spell. He was kind of a drifter. Kept himself to himself. The kinda guy you'd see in the corner of a dive bar, wearing a twenty year old suit, drinking alone. From what I was told, he got into a fight, pulled his switchblade, stabbed a guy in the arm. My grandad knew the judge, pulled some sort of strings, got him in the nervous hospital instead of jail.

Until you actually do, then the realities and difficulties of the situation sit in. Nice place to visit but living there sucks. My parents live in a smaller town in Arkansas than this, less than 2K people there. Great to visit but glad to not have to permanently stay.
