Lotta people complaining about this being too slow or simplified, comparing it to systems that have big auto loaders and such on planes... But the reason the Apache is designed like this? You can land a helicopter on any flat piece of dirt, use normal people with no equipment to reload it, and send it on it's way again. It makes the apache more versatile, not requiring all the crazy amount of infrastructure like most modern weapon systems require. And if it takes a while to load one gunship, that's fine because there's more support capable of filling the gap while one is in service. Its the same principle right down to squad level infantry tactics, and no matter how sophisticated we are sometimes the simplest solutions just work better.

From what I understand, this wasn't just reloading the gun but dealing with a jammed weapon. They don't usually have to break open the gun itself nor plug in to override the safety like that. I'm also pretty sure they don't take out fed ex boxes during a live mission nor just load in 44 rounds when the weapon holds 300+
@wreckincrew2714 Жыл бұрын
I also looks as if they had an issue with the loading mechanism since they had to resort to manually 1 by 1 hold and align those auto fed like stripper clips that came out the ammo box. That was pure skill and problem solving at it's best from highly trained and skilled soldiers from the guys on the ground tot he pilots in the seats. Love it!!!

@D0WNT0WN9 жыл бұрын
Joel Z. Williams same with the marines, man. Even in the infantry. But shit is a little different on deployment. I do understand why it's so stupid when you're in the rear though. It's so we can learn the proper way to do things. Then when you're out operating, you can place reality and safety on the same level. That's the theory at least. Doesn't always workout like that though.

I was in the USAF for 25 years, our career field was Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist. We loaded/unloaded all the munitions on fighter/bomber aircraft and did all the maintenance on the Bomb Racks, Rocket/missile launchers, gun systems, etc, we were called Weapons Troops back then, 462's now 2W1's (career field number/MOS for you soldiers). I worked on F-111E's, F-4's of all series, Reccy F-4's, OV-10'S A-10'S, F-15C/D/E STRIKE EAGLES, F-16'S, and B-1's.Loaded several millions of pounds of munitions over those years. Even after making rank and being a shop chief I still got myself qualified to load the training munitions, flares, rockets, AIM-9 missiles, 20mm/30mm ammo. We even loaded/maintained the M-60 machine guns on the OV-10 Bronco aircraft. I hated the office and wanted to be on the flightline with my troops, helping them we were short handed, not answering phones and stupid questions from 2nd Lt's fresh out of the Academy (you know who you are)!!! Even worked on some Navy aircraft when the diverted to our base in the sand box. When I was stationed in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) we worked on South Korean F-4's, OA-37's, F-5's and F-16's, Worked on the A-10 up at Eielson AFB Alaska and we pumped thousands of rounds of 30mm in them puppies. Interesting video there. I assume that was a gunship coming in for a hot reload of ammo and then back out to do more close ground support. As a 0311 grunt myself it gave me a greater respect for our own air wingers and the Army etc..Aviation Ordinance...you know what I mean. You could see the care these guys take in maintaining that gun...that gun that will be a great help to some grunt. Those 30 cal shells are devastating. The views from those gun cams above don't do them justice. From the ground it looks like a small cal mortar going off but coming in at super sonic speed. I was always glad these were on our side...they can see what is just ahead and all around you and be your eyes and big brother. A 10 Pilots are my personal favorite. Those guys fly so low you feel the heat from the engines. Always liked all those Pilots ..but you have to like the guys who maintain the weapons etc too....feel the love POGs' ..hehe
@allencowan669210 жыл бұрын
That'd be 30 MILLIMETER, not " 30 cal". Geez, you make grunts look bad.
@7410n010 жыл бұрын
Allen Cowan Caliber is just the internal diameter of the barrel and can be used in different measurement systems. 30 cal is still correct as long as he means 30 mm cal and not 30 inch cal or whatever.
@camperben10 жыл бұрын
7410n0 exactly....and the purpose of communication is to get the idea across...and you knew exactly what I was talking about it. Allen is correct regardless....the Caliber of that weapon is 30 millimeter.
@allencowan669210 жыл бұрын
Seriously, who in the US (other than perhaps mathematicians or engineers) sticks "caliber" after a metric round, regardless of how 'correct' it is? Regardless, omitting "millimeter" from his post leaves an uniformed reader no idea the actual caliber of the Apache's gun. But hey, he's a Jarhead, so I suppose that's understandable. ;) And Spiked, "rounds" are not necessarily "metric determined". The US has long used the English 'Imperial System' for a variety of things, some weapon calibers being one of them. Also, the second number in "30x113" is not the diameter of the casing, it's the height (or length, I suppose). You didn't specify, just wanted to clear that up.

I was infantry so my job had nothing to do with this. Everything I know is 3rd hand knowledge. Having said that: 1. Aircraft stays on because its faster to get it back out on mission, or they're just topping off so they are ready the next time they go out and they go park it from here. 2. There probably is a faster way but sometimes the mechanics don't work properly, you can see in the video he tried to load the whole clip first and was unsuccessful. 3. Cuz fucking freedom that,s why. 4. He probably just used a GoPro. Not sure if this is sensitive material but its been up for a while so I'm guessing it's fine. I had some Bradley vids back in the day but I lost em all, would love to have put em up.
