For the final installment of this week's Listography Jr. series, we're "ranking" the two studio albums by the highly influential band, Slint.
****
Slint was an American rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, formed in 1986. The band consisted of guitarist and vocalist Brian McMahan, guitarist David Pajo, drummer and vocalist Britt Walford, Todd Brashear (bassist on Spiderland), and Ethan Buckler (bassist on Tweez). Slint's first album, Tweez, was recorded by engineer Steve Albini in 1987 and released in obscurity on the Jennifer Hartman Records label in 1989. It was followed two years later by the critically acclaimed Spiderland, released on the independent label Touch and Go Records.
They have reunited sporadically since 1990.
****
Thanks for watching! Let us know what you think of Slint by leaving a comment below.
Next week: U2
After that: The Jam, Gene Clark, Don Henley

Fun fact I like about Slint is that PJ Harvey wrote them a letter asking if she could audition. It was never read by anyone in the band until after they had stopped making music/her own career took off

I got heavy into Slint just out of high school and was immediately drawn in by the shadowy, mysterious atmosphere of their sound. Something very cinematic about their sound. At the same time I was also getting into other post-hardcore bands like Quicksand, Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu and Sunny Day Real Estate, so maybe I had a better context to place them than trying to absorb them in a void. Still, I enjoyed the conversation.

Well that was great. Joe's song list was probably my favourite part. I have never been able to get into Slint. I've tried to listen to Spiderland a number of times over the years and I've never enjoyed the experience. A lot of what is written about it has always irritated me because I really don't hear what these people do who praise it. Oh well, I tried. All that usually comes of me listening to it is me being mad, so it's not worth it. I will say that this has lead to lots of fun discussion and memes over the last few weeks so I can praise them for that. 2. Tweez - 2 (4) 1. Spiderland - 2.5 (5.4) Songs: Nah

For some reason, when I looked at the list earlier in the week who was up for today, I thought I read it was the Slits, who are a 70's riot girl group from Britain, ala the Raincoats. Since you guys have taken a few interesting detours doing this channel, I didn't think much of it. Boy, was I surprised when I tuned in, since I was expecting something quite different. 1. Spiderland 2.5/5 2. Tweez 2/5 I'd never heard of Slint until this channel's Album of the Year series. Their albums have some decent playing on them, but are just not song-oriented/melodic enough to hold my interest. I didn't come across any tracks I'd be likely to revisit. MY RATING SYSTEM: 5.0 = major classic (consistently great *and* stratospheric highs) 4.5 = minor classic (consistently great *or* stratospheric highs, but not both) 4.0 = great (more than 50% is worth revisiting and it's an essential record for this artist/style - passes my "it'll make a fan out of someone who's new to this artist" test) 3.5 = seriously good (more than 50% is worth revisiting) 3.0 = nominally good (less than 50% is worth revisiting) 2.5 = decent (competent but uninspired - not worth revisiting) 2.0 = poor (difficult listen) 1.5 = awful (can't finish it) 1.0 = historically awful (musical apocalypse) *Note: "Consistently" does not mean "flawlessly." I allow for a few clunkers if the rest of the songs are good enough. Also, I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore.

@zantera

I think Spiderland is a 5/5 album but Tweez is more like a 3 and it's possibly one of those situations where a band disappearing into the ether after a fantastic album just creates this unique legacy. As much as I love Spiderland - I'm not sure if they had continued that they would be able to make anything as good again. Lightning in a bottle? There's been other bands like that, Neutral Milk Hotel or even My Bloody Valentine comes to mind, even if the latter had a sequel album decades later.

Yeah I'm not huge on Slint. It is funny how overhyped they are and people act like Spiderland is the greatest most influential album ever. They seriously think it's way ahead of it's time and I just don't see that. How could Spiderland have been that impactful when so few have heard the record? Especially when it came out it was ignored and even still so many other bands were doing the quiet/loud dynamic, odd tunings, weird structures. Tweez seems kinda interesting so maybe it's one to spend time with but Spiderland is largely quite boring and uneventful. The talking is the most annoying thing but the guitars aren't that great either. Drums sound good though. And the ending is cool.

I gave Spiderland a listen, fully expecting to hate it. I really didn't hate it. It reminded me a bit of Patti Smith's Horses album, which I thought was revolutionary. I would characterize this album as more reactionary than revolutionary. It seems like a reaction to rap to me. What happens when you use free verse poetry rather than rhyme and use the instruments to set the atmosphere rather than the beat? I didn't hate it. I could actually grow to like it I think.

Oof. Poor Joe! I discovered Slint maybe 12 years ago. I heard about them because of the 90s Norwegian weirdo black-ish metal band Ved Buens Ende, who cited them as an influence. In the 2000s VBE's drummer switched to guitar and they sort of put aside much of their more metallic qualities and morphed into the band Virus, who are also real good. I really have listened to Spiderland a lot more. Need to give the other record some more time. I do really enjoy teh sparse, heavy, rhythmically fascinating sound, but totally get why someone might not as well.

I tried with Spiderland again this week. Nothing. As a full album listening experience, I found it as boring as all the numerous attempts I've made in the past considering the high praise. I enjoy a couple of songs, particularly Washer. They're often referred to as connected with slow core bands I love like Codeine or The Palace /Will Oldham records, but for some reason they don't fully connect with me. Maybe it's me. Curious to hear what's the view of the TLM guys and the commentors.

02) Tweez (2 stars) 01) Spiderland (3 stars) 0 stars - irredeemably terrible/insultingly bad/the worst .5 stars - terrible 1 star - bad 1.5 stars - pretty bad 2 stars - fair 2.5 stars - meh 2.75 stars - "It's OK, but quit playing it." 3 stars - OK/decent 3.25 stars - pretty good 3.5 stars - good 4 stars - very good 4.5 stars - excellent 5 stars - scattered remnants notes: *This is the strangest band choice the TLM guys have made yet. Never would I have guessed they would cover this band. * I actually like some post rock, but this doesn't turn me on much. * They often hit those Sonic Youth notes that sound off key which I don't appreciate. * I think these albums have more merit as art than music. Some of these songs kinda take you on a weird journey that goes up and down, so that's kinda cool. * There's a guitar figure in "Nosferatu Man" that is appropriately creepy. * I likely won't be revisiting these albums. Not by choice anyway. * Cheers mates!!!!!

They borrowed the concept from Flipper but lacked the POWER. Their albums sound like a rehearsal for Sex Bomb Baby with the volume turned down so that the neighbours do not get disturbed. If "pretentious" needs a description, why not look here? Or is it simply boredom? 3. Tweez 2,0 (The ideas are there, even if others had them before. The implementation of those ideas is on the level of a school workshop - again others did that before with the necessary skills. Can a 30 minute record be too long?) 2. Untitled EP 2,0 (Both tracks announce themselves big and dribble off into nothingness. And then it is over.) 1. Spiderland 2,5 (All the time I wish that Bruford and Fripp would step in to ignite these tunes. There is a vision far on the horizon but all they can do is to vaguely outline it for us as they lack any talent to capture it. After 39 minutes you are still waiting in the same place as before.) None of their "songs" is worth noting.

David Pajo, formerly of Slint and Tortoise, is now with Gang of Four on their current tour. He does a great job filling in for the late Andy Gill. Gang of Four is fantastic. Slint is good. I like their experimentation but would take Tortoise over them 95 times out of 100, which I suppose makes me very very cool but also very very pretentious.

Listener suggestion: a guest host (friend, musician, youtuber, patron) asking you music trivia questions. I'm envisioning little white boards where you write your answers (or multiple-choice selection) and then reveal them. Given the amount of shit you all sling at each other whilst engaging in completely subjective activities, I think a little actual competition would be high entertainment. It would hinge on the questions though. For instance, you couldn't have someone continually grooving shoegaze fastballs that Kramzer hits out of the park. Food for thought, not that you guys need any help. Everything you do is worthwhile IMO.

Talking about "experimental"... Jack White's new album Fear of the Dawn - is it experimental, is it good? I would say, at least it is "interesting". He experiments a lot with new sounds and a lot of effects. But I am not sure if it is really an album - to me it sounds more like a collection of sound effects that wait for the incorporation in some context where they may fit. At least, it is not as boring as much of his other stuff but I doubt that I will listen to it very often again... (Thinking of White as a producer - this at times sounds like an advertisement to possible customers "see what I have in my trick bag, you can have that on your next album...")

I am not enjoying the Kramzer/Joe feud. While I don’t often agree with Joe, I appreciate his perspective and feel he expresses it well. Kramzer, who I do tend to agree with more from a review and rating perspective, is starting to come across as a gatekeeper. I don’t care to hear your judgement and disdain of Joe’s reviews. I don’t agree with Joe’s reviews of Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, or Slint, but I found his reasoning interesting and respect his differing perspective. Our tastes are subjective to our life experiences. It is what I like about this format. You are encouraging us all to listen along with you and make our own judgements. But perhaps Kramzer could tone down a bit and spend more time reviewing the album than he does reviewing Joe.
