Definitely agree, see if you can find someone that has large rocks (basketball size or bigger) they don't want and build them up the hillside. Then spread some type of grass seed so something grows there, the roots will help hold the dirt. :)
@Omegacron37
@Omegacron37 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, better spend the time/effort now to find as cheap of a source of rocks as possible because with that soil he'll be building a lot of retaining walls to keep this from happening all over the property. My prediction is they'll help for a bit (from the footage in the start of the video this could be only a few days) until the uphill side fills with the clay dirt and then they'll become useless.

I agree. Large rocks or boulders need to go on the slope. Maybe those wattles will work for a short time, but that's a load of water, pressure and weight on a steep slope to hold back. If there was a lot of snow that melted in the springtime, I'm guessing that slope would slide fast.
@darrylhayes9066

Yeah I agree the rocks would be the right thing I was just going a little cheaper.... You could get a hold of a construction company that busting up concrete up and spread it out and plant some Ivory on it

Hey Liz and Mike... coming late to your channel, but I love these builds... so many makers to keep up with; I must follow a hundred of these. I love the whole concept but I especially love that you make the concept your own and that you are flexible and forgiving enough to make and then learn from your mistakes and still love each other. SOOO important... Keep up the excellent work... and in the meantime, I'll try to catch up to where you are now.... BINGE TIME.

You need to cut a ditch alongside the drop off and road to keep the mud off your road. Seed the bare earth with clover and put some bush starts plugged into it to stop erosion. You could bury some bacon in the side and get more dogs,, as they seem to hold stable. Everything looks good!

Yes, cut a trench right above the waddles. Check out “A frames”. Easy to make. Put trenches on contour and then it will catch the water and go in to the waddles. With water you have to sink it, slow it and spread it. Also look up swales and berms, you will probably find the A frame in those videos. Good luck. .

Seeds are a long term solution which can be speeded up by taking-up clods of grass from other areas of the property and planting fist sized clumps across the bare earth. The roots then spread into the surrounding dirt. Dead cheap as the material is already there. Best done as the weather warms in the spring.

I'm concerned that when they are full of water the weight will pull them off the stakes....and it still doesn't address the water running off the top of the hill - which is where the highest volume of water/snow is coming from. you almost need a french drain along that ridge line, along with planting ivy or some type of cover crop in the exposed soil so the roots can bind together and keep it from sliding, and boulders/railroad ties, something large and heavy to act as a retaining wall along the bottom 8-12 feet. Otherwise, I'm concerned you'll have a ton, literally of mud on your driveway along with trees that used to be supported by that soil

By the way that soil looks even planting wont help that. You may need to dig and put it on the downhill side. You also dont have a high side ditch. That's going to be a problem.
@jacksak
@jacksak 3 жыл бұрын
Mike, That's a tough problem. Essential Craftsman laid boulders on a steep slope to help erosion, but he also had thick retaining walls. Maybe you've seen his "How To Stack A Boulder Wall: Ep 20" (Feb 27, 2018) showing what he did for a permanent fix. ~~~~ I hope this doesn't turn into the problem I think it might. But, I'm guessing that if you have a big snow Winter. the Spring runoff will be pretty bad.
