A test that has been asked many times in the comments - and rightly so - Alfa Romeo Crosswagon Q4 (156) vs Alfa Romeo 159 Q4. And rightly so cause there's a weird situation - both awd systems are based on torsen C but the traction control in the 159 model only works between the left and right sides, not between the axles. To rule out a coincidence or failure, we checked two 159 cars.

I think its not a matter of differential type but manufacturer/software of ESP/ASR unit. That used in 159 seems to be bad implemented - I wonder if that changed in later models after facelifting. As turning off ASR/ESP via button does not disengage ESP totaly (especially for 4WD management operations) I think it would be nice to see a test of such a vehicle with central torsen differential (this Alfa156 or any older Audi) with ESP pump fuses taken out - so ESP/ASR/ABS completely disengaged. It would show us how it works on purely mechanical level - i assume it wouldnt be able to move with even only one wheel on a roller.

It's normal. 156 crosswagon was made for the off road, 159 q4 for the streets.

I made 1200 kms to buy a nice 159 Q4, and I realize already that the Crosswagon is much better. Need to find another Crosswagon... damn!

My feeling is that the 2007 159 Q4 is better than the MY08 version (I have owned both).

per quanto sia bella la 159, premetto che ne ho avuta una 2.4 JTDm 200cv, faceva schifo sotto tutti i punti di vista. è un assieme di parti assemblate dalla general motors (GM) l'unica cosa buona era il motore, che nel caso delle versioni benzina (tranne la TBI) facevano cagare. la 156 era costruito molto meglio, seppur era FIAT.. ma almeno non era GM

The same center diff - torsen C - but no TC between the axles, just left/right.

But the same question could be asked for example to Audi 1987-1995, center torsen differential with no electronics.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers exactly, no electronics. I think that some systems could kick power to the other axle using hydraulics rather than TC. The CRV used to do that. But here? No excuse, there were good enough electronics. And its a street car that may encounter some icy starts on traffic lights, should be better. It feels like lazy engineering honestly but idk, just an opinion hehehe

@@pablomoreno1999 CR-V has on demand awd system, here we have permanent and fully mechanical. Furthermore - Alfa knows how to do it cause older 156 passes all tests so the question is why they decided to limit the TC in 159. Costs, driving dynamics?

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers exactly, it's the basics of awd that. I understand they only cared about torque vectoring because it's a car set up 100% for roads. But again, if an axle loses grip (oversteer for some reason). It's just gonna keep getting all the power instead of kicking some to the other one. Which again defeats the whole point of awd... Even in conditions where you don't really need it
