What a huge disappointment the RAV4 is on this matter, and also what a nice surprise the new CR-V is. Thank you for this test, I am considering buying the new CR-V in about a year and I need decent 4WD performance, but I heard that Honda didn't quite excel at this on their previous models. Good to know it does now!

My mind is still blown away by a previous video where a FWD Suzuki beat the AWD Yaris Cross Hybrid on rollers. You have to be downright inept to have an AWD system programmed so poorly.

Amazing the engineers can't make this work. Every wheel has a sensor, so the computer knows which ones are spinning and which are not. What a fail. On the other hand, it's just amazing that nearly every manufacturer allows the wheels to spin dozens of times before even trying to add power to the wheel that has not been spinning. I don't understand this. They could engage after just two revolutions, but are there any that actually do? Anyhow, thanks for testing. Good stuff.

To be honest i didn't expect the rav4 to do too well. But seeing that particular one and having in mind that in 2021 toyota reprogrammed the awd and esp there must be a problem with that car. I think however, and i have seen this on other videos. That under full throttle and trail mode for some reason. The rear axle disconnects and it becomes fwd or even it only works for starts... I don't know but something weird happens that it just kills the rear

We did give you a TRAIL mode... let me laugh! It was a JOKE. At this point all it seems down to electronic tuning. And they both seem fine but Toyota played a very bad joke on their customers and possibly one that can leave you stranded in the middle of trail if you don't know any better. Software update, anyone?

As is often the case with the Awd-i Toyota, the results and reactions are beyond comprehension. With its more traditional transmission, the CR-V does very well, but as is so often the case with only one grippy rear wheel. Paradoxically, while the dual-engine architecture with no linkage offers all the possibilities, since on the Rav 4 there is no problem of engine power on the rear axle, the result is, in my opinion, disappointing. Especially as other vehicles with a similar architecture (such as the 3004 hybrid 4) do much better. I'm not even talking about 100% electric cars...

That model CRV which is the 23 and up has an electric motor on the rear axle with the standard connection to the engine vs the pure electric rear axle on the rav 4. the 2022 CRV hybrids only have an electric motor on the front axle with the standard connection to the engine which made slightly more power than the 2023 CRV hybrid.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Lemme restate that. The new CRV actually does have an electric motor on the rear axle because the clutch is hydraulically operated by an electric motor. The Front has the dual motor system which are side by side which is interesting to me. I did read somewhere that there was a motor on the rear axle but is stated the wrong reason.

​@@HaydenWagner-p1sElectric motor, responsible for hydraulic pressure on the clutch pack is there since gen 4. It's just an electro-hydraulic coupling, like Haldex or Dynamax, nothing unusual.

Honda's e:HEV AWD is mechanical in nature no? I think Honda uses the same or similar driveshaft which pulls power from the front mounted electric motor spline to the front axle.

Honda świetna. Szkoda tylko że w Europie mają ceny z kosmosu. No i przede wszystkim brak AWD w HRV i ZRV (w USA mają) . Nie każdy potrzebuje aż tak dużego auta.

Thanks for the test! Didn't expect that with Rav. I'm currently considering to buy a Rav4 fwd vs awd. Not sure if the last one makes a difference in daily use in a city/highway. The price diff is 2.5k approx.

definitely failed to name or tune the trail mode correctly. But the car, the mechanics and electronics parts have no faults of their own I am pretty sure.

@@m80116 i dont believe that something was wrong with the condition of this Rav4 but i m certain that this allwheel drive system it isnt even worth to be called 4x4. My Toyota Rav4 1st gen would and could go every hurdle because it is real 4x4 system and i m disappointed that these new systems ar absolutely worthless.

The tests show there's apparently nothing wrong with the Rav4 mechanics and electronics. It seems a tuning problem of the specific mode "TRAIL" or a wrong calibaration of the system be that either model dependent or this very car alone. I am sure the Rav4 is a capable SUV.

Potwierdzam, że Cr-Vka świetnie radzi sobie w dużym śniegu. Mam dobre porównanie, bo jeździłem kilka lat Audi A6 Quattro i Subaru AWD i faktycznie napęd w Hondzie jest zaskakująco dobry.

@@shizzydeep6867 The reason for Rav4 is unknown. There's electric motor powering rear axle but it looks like TC is not doing its job well. When it comes to CR-V - rear axle is powered via clutch pack, system must power the axle and brake the spinning wheel at the same time, it's too much for the system.

If I recall correctly, the Rav 4 Plug-in hybrid has 306 hp combined, with 188 hp from the 2.5 liter gasoline engine, 154 hp in the rear electric motor and 54 hp in the front electric motor. Not very impressive performance from Toyota, I wonder if their software can improve the results.

Faktycznie to awd-i ma słaby soft. Bo mechanicznie nie ma powodu by był znacznie gorszy od tego elektrycznego subaru czy nawet tesli. Ale musi być jakoś bardzo nietypowo zaprogramowany ten napęd bo niedawno na polskim kanale toyoty porownywali przyspieszenie takiego rav4 i bz4x i tam widac ze ta ravka lekko tyłem zamiotła. To znaczy że ludzie z toyoty zaprogramowali go do jakichs konkretnych warunkow. Ale trzeba przyznac, ze zwlaszcza przy braku przyczepnosci tylko na jednym przednim kole to smiesznie sobie radzi. A tak nawiasem… jesli jakis samochod wyjezdza z rolek przy wylaczonej kontroli trakcji to oznacza tylko ze ten wylacznik nie dziala, moze co najwyzej przelacza kontrole trakcji w inny „tryb”. Ewentualnie moze jeszcze miec lsd ale to inna bajka.

Różnie producenci konfigurują wyłącznik ESP/TC. Z reguły jest tak, że wyłączeniu ulega ESP oraz engine traction control, natomiast brake traction control pozostaje aktywne.

Conclusions: - CRV has an excellent AWD system that's quite responsive in almost all situations, but its sole weakness is the loss of traction on both front wheels. The torque split to the rear may be too little to move the entire heft of the car? - RAV4's AWD system is mediocre across the board is Trail Mode is borderline pointless because it looks like AWD works worse in Trail Mode and in some cases, it's almost like it doesn't work at all.

@@jswong8200 First conclusion is wrong. Torque sent to the rear is enough to push the car, you can see it in the first attempt. When it comes to Rav4 - in real conditions like snow it is doing fine. It's not the best but not that bad. It may fail in really demanding situations.

I think Honda would’ve passed the 3 roller test on the rear wheel if u pushed it enough in normal mode with traction control off. It was almost about to clear it when you stopped…

The kia sportage hev awd seems to work much better than these 2, I myself have already tested it in some off-road conditions where I was surprised by the result, but in this video you can see how Honda managed to improve compared to its previous models, while the Toyota manages to be a Total failure in the hybrid version.

Widać że naped w Toyocie jest bardzo prymitywny i tylko system ESP ratuje co nieco sytuację, zupełnie inaczej wygląda to w Hondzie ewidentnie program odpowiedzialny za działanie napędu 4x4 działa osobno a kontrola trakcji osobno, dlatego wyłączenie ESP nie wpływa znacząco na działanie napędów, Toyota w skrócie dała DxPY.

My mom drove her rav4 hybrid into a ditch. Back tire in the air. Front tire hanging in the ditch. It backed right out. Normal mode no settings no drama. These videos with rollers are just internet drama. And don’t represent the real world.
