My family is decently broke. Thrift stores are great, and it sucks that people take things that are cheap and sell it for way more.

Big companies do this all the time. They over work there labor and pay them pennies compare to how much they sell their clothes. Marshall is a discount store but I'm sure the clothes they buy from other brands they brought it cheaper than what they sell it for

Saint Vincent de Paul usually has cheaper prices instead of goodwill, and local thrift stores can be too. The Saint vinnies by me have a half off on everything once a week which is incredibly awesome. And I've found adorable stuff there. 😁

There was a time when I thought that thrift stores in my city don't have anything good, but then I found out about resellers. I couldn't afford buying clothes new or spending a lot of time and energy on going to the thrift store when they bring new stuff, and it was so frustrating trying to find anything nice looking and in good condition. I remember this one time I needed a sweater for winter. I went to the only thrift store that was close to me and found nothing suitable for the weather. Then I went home and googled some videos about thrift stores in my city. There was a huge haul from a reseller from that exact store, and she was bragging how she snatched some items before the other reseller while showing some footage, and there were people with mountains of clothes bought clearly not for themselves or some charities

For all the re-seller haters, most of the people in the thrift who are doing actual survival buying, aren't looking for a Reformation dress. People who actually do need the thrift are generally buying your Target style clothes (like everybody else in life) or t-shirts, jeans, suits for work. The thrifts in my area aren't upcharging for everyday items, they are upcharging for the Reformation dress they know re-sellers are looking for. Also don't assume that all re-sellers are rich entitled teens. There are so many who buy to support families back in other countries, elderly people on fixed incomes selling to make some extra money, moms working from home, people trying to pay for college, and the list goes on. It is not just "poor people" out there who are trying to survive the best way they know how so don't be so quick to judge. I myself re-sell so I can pay for my expensive a-- medications due to chronic illness.

Everyone saying that clothes in thrift stores will go to waste and re-sellers are just helping out are wrong. None of the items they resell would’ve been going to a landfill because they specifically go for items they know will sell for more, which are the items that people are most likely to buy at thrift stores.

I don't know why this girl resells thrift shop items, but I hope it's becouse seh needs it or she uses it for a good cause, although unfortunately I feel like she is using the money for personal splurging (if I'm wrong, please correct me, I don't want to sound accusing)

People are blaming resellers for Goodwill charging more. Nope. Goodwill is charging more because they want to. I’m fortunate to live where I have different thrift/resale stores close or pretty close to visit. I bring that up because for that reason I’ve found that going elsewhere is far better due to the prices. Not to say that some stuff goodwill sells isn’t a good deal, but I’m more likely to find better deals, better things, and in better shape elsewhere no matter what they’re selling.

What do you mean??? In my local thrift stores resellers will literally come in first thing in the morning after a new delivery and buy everything that is high quality/fashionable by the standards of current teens. The only things left after that are the biggest and smallest sizes of jeans + workout pants. Oh, and also stretched out sweaters... When the inflation in your country is insane, people throw themselves at thrift stores and everything nice *would* get bought over the course of the week, even if resellers didn't exist. A lot of people from my school visit every thrift store that they can possibly walk to once or twice a week. The problem is resellers buy out everything actually *nice* in the first hour of the thrift stores being open... And then sell it for more money. Which means that usually finding something good in a thrift store takes a couple weeks of constant visits. I'm sorry, but reselling is just selfish, especially in areas where people are generally not well off. It's just robbing the overall community out of quality clothes for one's own personal gain because some reseller can afford to buy out half of the shop the day new clothes come in. Fun that you love vintage shopping online, but all of those reseller's online posts could have gone to people who can't afford them anymore after the mark up the resellers put on them. At least that's how it it in my community where thrift stores are heavily depended on

@@kuerta I always find cute stuff at my thrift stores and there’s always so many clothes. Employees are constantly refilling the racks so much that it’s hard to get the clothes out of the rack. There is a surplus of clothing in this planet, not a shortage. Did you know that most stuff in thrift stores never sell? I bet not. What you consider nice stuff at a thrift store is relative. Some people go to find exclusively certain vintage styles, others go to find modern brands, etc. This whole thing in which resellers are being demonized is a very recent thing because of ignorant tik tok people as if vintage sellers haven’t existed since forever. Tik tok just told you to be triggered about this when there is no issue. You’re mad at a problem that doesn’t exist. And some areas have better thrift stores than others. If you’re from a big city, yes, thrift stores are going to suck because there’s more people in big cities. Thrift stores always get picked over during the morning, again, this has always been the case but tik tok is telling you that this is a new thing. Don’t be a sheep. I haven’t seen a reseller that became rich from reselling. Rich people don’t have a need to do this. Many thrift stores are for charity. They don’t care about who buys their stuff, they care about the money that goes to charities. But as I said, you would rather thrift stores get less money for charity because you are jealous of what resellers do. They do the work that you don’t want to do. They wake up early, spend hours on thrift stores, they keep up with the dates in which there will be sales, they talk to the employees, etc. This is all stuff that you can do yourself. No one is stopping you. This is all jealousy from women to women, very sad. And it’s veiled under the guise of “I just care about the poor people!” No you don’t. You would be more than happy to have charity thrift stores sell less ,get less charity money, and have more clothes end up in landfills in third world countries if it means that the “evil” resellers can’t make some cash. Thrift stores are for everyone, that was always the point of thrift stores. To say that only poor people should buy there is classist and elitist.

@@adriana12995 Constantly refilled thrift store racks? I acknowledge that thrift store resellers might be useful in areas where thrift stores are not constantly full of people, but once again, that depends on the area. In my city thrift stores get a refill every Monday and that is it. There's no sales, and everyone spends hours on thrift stores. I'm sorry, but you sound like you're from a community where malls are more popular than thrifting and thrift stores don't get nearly as much business as in my city. It also sounds like thrift stores function differently where you're from. Here, resellers are a genuine problem, because like I said, they will buy out half of the store on Monday and then post it online. One could say it's a good thing, but I won't when it makes people unable to get their hands on things locally. The fact that thrift stores in your city have an overabundance of clothes show that we live in completely different situations. Maybe in yours resellers are appreciated because they help to get rid of the overfilled racks - but in mine they only add to the problem of people not being able to buy clothes. Resellers sound great when the community is not making use of what they have available and the clothes need to go somewhere else to avoid being thrown out. But not every community will be like that, thus resellers are not needed everywhere. Oh, and also, I don't use tiktok... My opinion on resellers is personal experience
@kuerta
@kuerta 2 жыл бұрын
Also, once again, from what I've seen: resellers only ever target things that would be bought anyway - for example perfect condition, with a brand logo, or something a teen/young adult would wear - since they're buying them with the intention to sell as quickly as possible. If resellers were to help the issue of clothes going into landfills, they would have to go in and grab the few clothes left on racks at the end of the week, the ones that no one locally wants to buy... Which is just bad business practice because they probably won't be able to sell those online either. Fishing out the best clothes before anyone locally can is helping no one except the reseller. It's also not helping landfills because resellers only buy things that would be bought anyway, since those are the things that they will be able to sell. Well, unless you don't live in an area where thrift stores are nearly empty by Friday. Also - "I always find cute stuff at my thrift stores." Once again we live in a different reality and situation because here, that is definitely not the case

I try to be considerate, and if someone seems to be interested in something, I just keep going. If I don’t find anything good… no big deal. I can usually find it brand new at Hobby Lobby or Target for almost the same price. Especially nowadays. 😂😂I grew up so so dirt poor, but now I can afford to buy an item new if I really really love it. The main idea here, is consumerism mindset is taking over our lives.

Ok, so. I've been reading comments: Nothing is wrong with reselling. 1) if people don't see the value of an item to buy it (I've seen some really expensive good brands that have been there for over 2 weeks closer to 2 months by the tag color) then its not your fault you DO recognize the value and want to sell it for a profit 2) there's a market for the bands, and people are always looking- ie like me I'm always looking for Her Universe brand clothing but often my sizes get sold out online immediately new, so second hand is my only option. If someone found it in a thrift store and didn't resell it resulting in me never getting it I'd be extremely disappointed because I've never seen that brand at my local stores (some areas just don't get certain brands and more of a different; like I have a fabletic store in the same city so there's usually at least 5-10 bottoms each time I visit at least) 3) it's expensive now for 2 reasons. A is that it's become a trend and corporations are jumping on the band wagon of increasing prices for more money because people are gonna pay it anyway. B is because they don't want people reselling stuff; they are more than able to price items at what they sell online second hand but they dont/haven't until recently and THATS what is making people mad. (Basically the companies are realizing the value of the FREE product they have) its their prerogative to do so and was more than likely going to happen even if people didn't mention how the made money reselling 4) if you're getting mad at reselling, you better be mad at every other corporation like target, walmart, sams club, grocery stores and such. They are the same thing- they get the product (sometimes not even directly from the manufacturer) and they increase the price. Thats no different than the reselling- in their case they spend hours (I've spent 3 hours just skimming 2 clothing types and books for myself) looking for quality products so others don't have to. They are merely a "middle man" between the buyer and the original production company. 5) some neighborhoods are struggling because of it yes (i can only assume large cities like NY or LA are the worst), but the majority are not. I've gone to my local shops (we're a mid/small sized ciry) and there's always HUNDREDS of decent (think around a year of heavy near weekly use) to brand new quality items in each individual store and are around $15 MAX but are usually only in the $5. It's merely the want to appear "trendy" that people are mad at as well. (Ie how dare I not get this luxury brand for the cheapest price ever of $5) there are many brands that get overlooked at my stores- I can't count how many times I've seen hundreds of Nike or adidas or similar higher name brand items sitting there for weeks because (as I heard one of the shoppers one time) they would ONLY buy like lululemon and such. It's people feeling the need to "fit in" with fashion culture that I've seem time and time again as a reason not to. Never once have I felt the need to buy ONLY high end brand types new or thrifted and I've managed to wear the majority of the same (arguably lower or crappy/cheap quality) clothes going on 6+ years now with only a small number finally getting to the need of repair or scrapping. If you take care of them even crappy clothes can last a LONG time so the excuse that they're buying all the good stuff doesn't fly unless you have zero idea how to care for your clothes. (Also as a side note, like 90% of the clothes are out of the current fashion trend anyway so that's a mute point) 6) In the US, because that's where im talking about, tons of clothes do get thrown away from stores. And we do have thrift stores that take clothes for homeless, domestic abuse victims and such and resell ones to fund their shelter, so the ones who need them most get the choices first. Each one (save some of the more scummy ones) donates to local charities and such so it's much better for them to have resellers coming in and consistently buying items because it clears out space for more items instead of having them sit there onky to be thrown away and has them bringing in however much money for those items. (We don't resell, but my mom and I have probably spent over $600 on just household items and books and like another $400 on mainly exercise clothes and like casual clothes so imagine how much resellers are getting them for their causes on their trips if they're doing say a 2x a month bulk trip.) 7) finally, there's always the crappy people of each group, but its neither fair nor accurate to say it's morally wrong or all resellers are evil because of the small percentage of people. It's like saying all dogs are evil because you've only ever come across untrained/aggressive/wild stay dogs. People have pointed out its an easy way to help out people struggling for money because it IS so cheap to get into. I have family friends who are disabled and can't work regular labor or 9-5 type jobs so over the years working from basic reselling from thrift stores to adding liquidation palettes to their reselling are their only means of making enough income to survive. And that loops back to point 1. They've put time and effort into figuring out what's of value (what actually resells) and its not their fault someone either doesn't recognize the value until too late (gets there too late if an items been sitting there for weeks) or doesn't want to put the effort to fix an item up to get it to the highest level of value possible.

Hey y’all let’s not bash on resellers. I’ve used reselling as a way to make income during really hard times so it’s not only people being greedy. Also there are more than enough things going into thrift stores for everyone. If it makes you mad just don’t buy from resellers

Thrift stores have so much merchandise coming in that they welcome resellers.

This is hilarious! I'm not sure why people are so grumpy in the comment section, maybe you hit a nerve for them.

I was thrift shopping at a Great Value Goodwill. Wasn't even a real Goodwill. Found a big Coach bag in decent shape for $15. Yes I'm broke & yes it hurt me to spend $15 on a purse but it was justified!!

Omg the thing with the bag reminded me of when i was young i was shopping with my aunt and i saw an elegant and delicate flowey-patterned light peach handbag with lace details and i went to grab it to show it to my aunt. What i didnt realise was that it belonged to an old lady who just left it at a shelf cause she wanted to check out some other bags there and when she saw me she stopped me claiming that its hers. Then my aunt stepped in and cleared out the misunderstanding and that old lady was really nice. She even showed us her bag explaining where she got it and its design with how much space it has and all that. After we said goodbye i was really embarrassed but im glad i wasnt accused of theft or anything like that and im happy i met such a kind-hearted old lady (and not a karen) 😅😅😅😅😅😅😊😊😊😊
