I was fortunate enough to witness the whole SJF from early beginnings to the final shows. So talented. NZ music rocked in the 80s and 90s.

Thanks for making obscure, still relevant audio recordings of pre-shoe gaze wonders available. Please make all such college radio station live recordings available. They provide a glimpse on real rock from the last two decades of the 20th century. We need to save this era of music.

Saw them live at the subway in chc when their first ep come out. Was blown away with dialing a prayer and all the songs off the first ep. My later wife showed me the bored games and double happys too. Brilliant band suffering from tragedy for too long

My 20+ years flirtation with The Chills, and, by affiliation, Flying Nun, brought me here (four years ago). Had the Internet the reach in 1990 (or NZ was that much closer to New England) that it does now, these guys would have been there for me, treasured sounds of my youth, much like REM, U2, and Husker Dü are now. But better late than never at all, right?

This band had two legit songwriting geniuses. Each with their own unique voice and style. Grateful for the 2 albums they put out, and a shame they had to part ways with Andrew. I think Bike and Dimmer were great follow on bands, but didn't really compare to the full SJF sound. Shayne grounded Andrew in rock, and Andrew drove Shayne to more complex melodies. Perfect creative partnership.

I felt so bad when the station went thru its NPR-ification in the late 90s and gave their best shows the ax. 'Enthal was my favorite. I tried emailing her, and she was understandably bitter about it all. I inquired if she had any plans in digitalizing the archives, and I may have phrased it wrong, got back a semi-hostile answer. I just hate to think most of the tapes that defined the better part of my childhood will be lost in the ether.

No idea about that, but he's fucking hilarious between songs. Also apparent throughout is that they're hardly able to hear each other - seems lackadaisical or incompetent engineering. The mix sucks, but still love this upload.

@@ten10strips85 I dunno, Shane sounds like the kinda kiwi douche that I grew up with who makes constant acid remarks. And when someone calls him out for going too far, he just laughs "can't ya take a joke, mate?" They're really tiring to deal with because everyone knows it's because they're insecure.
