That's the closest you can get to losing a net, without losing the net :) My daughter and I spent the last 5 days in a cottage near Castle Douglas but the weather was pretty awful so we hiked with the dog rather than risk fishing the rocks. Next time... I always carry a filled spare spool and an identical spare reel. I didn't used to do this, until my Penn Clash 2500 failed on a decent Pollock when I was several miles offshore on the Prowler. I swore I would never let that happen again, so I carry a spare spool AND reel, just in case. Medals and promotions for getting out - some nice fish for your trouble :)

The weather has been pretty awful over that way so good going getting out, despite the weather. Funny you should say that since only reel I've had fail has been a Penn. My Daiwa Bg Mag has never failed in 5 years and that's without being well maintained, saying that I always carry a spare loaded spool, just didn't bother unpacking it since the fish seemed closer in. All the best and tight lines👍🎣

Another great video. I admire your restraint that there is not one swear word despite the adversity faced. Nearly dropped your net in the tide, then broke it, numerous lost lures and losing all that braid. Rain and wind howling and no one “oh bugger” 😅.

Phew! You really had to work for those fish today. What with nearly chucking your net away, fighting the wind rain and cold, the loss and destruction of quite a few lures, and then snapping your landing net......all in a days fishing. Top angling Nathan, very enjoyable watch. Happy new year to you and family. Arthur.

Crikey, lure fishing is an expensive pastime! 😂 My best catch last year without a doubt, was me successfully managing to retrieve my new case of K2’s which had slipped out my unzipped lure/bumbag, whizzing out to see on an ebbing tide and offshore breeze! Rescued all thanks to some fortunate casting and the trusty Patch 125! Not much of a fight but I was over the moon 😂. I got those same vibes watching you save your net. Some lovely pale pollack. They looked like they were pale blue, which is not surprising given how cold it was. Cheers

I was thinking about heading South to eyemouth for a change next week take a lure rod with a few metals if the water stays clear also the normal gear cart wings lug squid etc ,, down around the caravan park, golf course area having only been there once on the boat I'm not sure about the area apart from the reading up I've done etc and I do have a couple of ideas,, some reports of really good fish coming out when the sea is running,, it should be pretty flat by next weekend,, I jst wondered if there was advice you could throw in to improve our chances 🐟🐟😊👍
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
I've only fished with bait up there twice, one blank and one decent session. Water was clear and flat both times so don't have that much experience. Lures on the other hand, they'll work in most conditions. Most of the marks fish, but if it's flat then have a look on navionics for the deep water (tends to be on the golf course side). The canons is a popular mark on the caravan site side is tidal- only fishable for a couple of hours either side of low - but the golf course side is more accessible in that respect. Best tip for winter lure fishing is to fish as slow and close to the seabed and structure as possible. Hope this helps and you get amongst them

Awesome video as usual mate, at least you caught some fish, I was along from here early Saturday morning for the first time and caught nothing but snags lol i can confirm what you said about the rocks, half the marks I wanted to try I didn't even attempt due to how slippy the rocks were after the rain. I'll definitely be investing in some studs. Thanks for sharing what knot you use as I've just started using braid and was using the double uni knot, every snag I lost the leader 😂 will be trying the fg knot for sure!

In all honesty, I just go fishing when I can. Some times it's good and others it's bad. But, a period of settled weather with a building tide period and fish on the ebb. The other thing is to keep moving, if one mark doesn't fish then don't think twice about moving to a different mark. Hope this helps

Really enjoyable watch, thanks for sharing. Regard the lure glue, never found it to be much cop. You might get another cast or two out of it, but then I find once it's ripped it never swims true again so just better of changing as the risk of losing it to the rip increases anyhow.. do we need more plastic needlessly lost to the sea!?
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
It's a fair point. I guess it's that never-ending conflict between the environment and bank account- I must have a bin bag full of ripped soft plastics at home which looks like a bag of cash sitting there and hoped to save throwing them out.
@TruBlue111
@TruBlue111 2 жыл бұрын
@Slippy Limpets absolutely, that's the trade off with soft plastics now, you don't get much change out of a tenner now for a 3 pack of black minnow bodies.. shocking. I only tend to use them as blank savers now, last Bass of the year was a double on a gravity stick. Think I recall someone looking into melting down destroyed bodies and remoulding, obviously snag here being creating a good enough mould and cracking the pouring technique... keep up the good work, tight lines. 🙂

Hi mate, I tend to use approach shoes with or without studs. They're shoes meant for climbers walking to their climbs so are light, supportive and designed to be used on rocks. But with most shoes work if you add studs to them. Hope this helps and you have a good one in May

To make your lures weedless, if you thread a piece of rubber band ( around 1cm wide and 4cm long or as required) onto the hook before the hook is threaded through the soft plastic lure. The rubber band should be pushed up just under the hook eye. So then just get the other tail end of the rubber band and push the point of the hook into the end of the rubber band ( not the side of the rubber band but into the end) this will make a bridge across the mouth of the hook and when a fish hits it, the rubber band just falls away.. It should save losing a lot of lures.

Haven't watched the whole video I just paused to comment, I've subscribed because your fishing in an area exactly same type of ground like I fish on the isle of man called scarlett, its a brilliant spot for Pollack, coalie, mackerel and the odd bass oh and obviously wrasse if you're fishing a ledger rig, I don't know about cod up there I've personally never caught one but I know people do get them 4 or 500 yards out boat fishing so they are there at a distance and I imagine this is the Time of year I'd catch them but it's way too dangerous to fish alone and the only person who would join me would get board in 10 minutes if he didn't hook up on a lure. Anyway I'm hoping you'll give some pointers in your video that would improve my chances.

Hiya Fella. Couple of silly questions for you. Probably stuff you've covered before but I'm a Newby when it comes to coastal fishing (Midlands canals are my bag). 1st up the infamous FG knot, I use it myself but any chance you can do a short vid on how you tie it, particularly when on the bank so to speak. Always good to know if there is a better way. 2nd question, the little rig bad/wallet thing that you see towards the start of the vid. What is it please 🙏?? Ps so lucky with that net!!!
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, sure if my way is best, but I use the bend/weight of the rod to help keep tension in the line. Do a quick search for FG knot by Briggsey, he's got the best way of tieing them. The little wallet thing is an Outdoor Research Back Country Organiser, it's really meant for camping and skiing but works well for keeping my gear organised. Hope this helps👍🎣

@Slippy Limpets ta muchley. Found the OR pack (a brand I'm familiar with) , just looks perfect for packets of soft plastics. The FG yeh I tie a loop on the end of the braid, put that on the reel handle and gently add tension via the rod so sounds the same. 👌 loving the vids, slowly making my way through your back catalogue.

It's still patchy up here on the cod but i've had lots more 5lb plus fish up to 10lb 5oz this winter than the last 2 so it's definitely been a better one. Great vid as usual. Comment on studs in shoes: IMO They are great if the rocks are barnacled and/or knobbly and gnarly enough for the studs to key into, but I find them quite dangerous if the rock is that smooth igneous rock. The studs skate over the smooth rocks like ice, and for those rocks just good grippy soles with that elastic give to them seems better. Just depends on the area. Know our marks I suppose.
