I agree with the other comments that the enclosure needs to be much bigger. I would recommend watching some german hamster videos as they have beautiful natural setups. Also, you can put the cabin on dowel rods to hold it up and prevent it from falling. If you get a bigger enclosure there will be more space for interesting things like hiding places, branches, rocks, a wheel, maybe sections of different materials like soil, sand and bedding. Your hamster is very cute and I hope you continue on improving your setup!

Nice video but keep in mind hamsters need the wheel in the cage and they come from deserts. Water can kill them so that's why we can't put them in the water. Having this in mind you can't plant plants and water them....Also the biggest a hamster's cage is it's better for it

I really like the design of the Hamstaerium, but I would point out that while it's a vast improvement spacewise to the previous cage, hamsters really do best in as much space as you can give them. In the US, educated hamster owners strive for at least 450-650 square inches which is commonly in the form of a 40-gallon fish tank, or an Ikea Detolf on its side. Many places such as Germany have vastly higher standards. I'm sure he loves the natural environment you're creating though, and its still larger than many hams are given :)

Maybe, if you're afraid the house will fall, give it some pillars that kerp it up? Just like real houses standing on top of a fundation. Stephem may need to dig around it, but at least his house won't fall over if he digs all the dirt away from under the house. Edit: Also you really have to add a hamster wheel and enrichment like wooden tubes and more places to hide in. Right now the area is far too open.

This unfortunately is not safe or proper hamster care as many people have noted in the comments. First of all, please don't allow your hamster to free roam outside even if you're watching. It would be very easy to lose them (like you almost did) or for them to pick up bacteria/fungi/parasites etc that could make them sick. Remember that the hamsters we keep as pets have lived their entire lives indoors and are not naturally from the environment you live in to begin with, so they DO NOT have the immunity to the bacterias found in your local area. You also run the risk of them getting caught by predator animals. Also, the terrarium is way too small for a hamster. Hamsters need a large horizontal enclosure that can provide at least 450sq inches of unbroken floor space, but much more (800+ sq inches) is considered good care among many hamster care associations, veterinary associations, and as a general consensus from the hamster care hobbyist communities. You also should have an enclosure that allows for at least 8-10 inches of bedding as hamsters are natural burrowers that can burrow up to 3ft down in the wild. Your current enclosure does not meet either of these standards. The next issue is the fact that hamsters do not even live in a terrarium like environment to begin with. Dwarf hamsters like you have are from arid or prairie like places in Asia. The environment you gave is nice, but is far too moist and the twigs/moss/bark etc are not what this hamster would find in the wild. Extensive research should be done to find out what types of vegetation are toxic and any thing you put in your terrarium should be sanitized (by either freezing or high heat) so as not to introduce the bacteria/fungi/parasites I mentioned before. As other have mentioned, your hamster needs a large 8-9" wheel (not a saucer wheel either), a sand bath using hamster appropriate sand, and more hides/enrichment in order to keep your hamster entertained and hopefully to lessen stress/boredom behaviors. It's also preferable to scatter feed versus having a food bowl as hamsters are foragers. Overall, I think it's a nice idea, you just need to do more research and execute it differently. Please don't ignore all the advice in the comments and from other, more experienced hamster KZbin channels. We just want what's best for your hamster and for him to live a long, happy life which he will not if he's kept in this terrarium.

please get a bigger enclosure, i think the minimum is 450 square inches of floor space. a big diy bin cage or a 40 gallon (or bigger) tank would be best. i’m pretty sure this hamster species comes from the dessert and needs at least 1 third of the cage to be hamster safe sand. i would also recommend a wheel that is 8+ inches because flying saucers and smaller wheels can cause major back problems. adding stilts to the house would also be good so it doesn’t collapse on the hamster as he builds his burrows. i would also recommend a different substrate to be the main bedding. like aspen or unsented paper bedding. and please make sure none of the bedding is wet, it is extremely dangerous to hamsters, this is why they use sand to bathe. i’m also worried that he was let outside, there are many predators and bugs that could cause damage to him, and unknown plants that he could possibly eat. i’m glad you’re open to suggestions to make your hamsters life better :)

There are quite a lot of things that are wrong here. The concept I think is meant to do well, but first don't let your hamster outside. Even for a little bit. If it gets spooked and run it's gone and will likely die. Second, that cage looks interesting but is far too small. They need at minimum(as in at least, should have more) 450 square inches of floor space along with an area for a sand bath. I am also concerned by how low the front is that he can leave. The saucer running wheels are bad for their back, so I would recommend a large standing wheel where his back can be completely straight while running. Over all good intentions, but there are still things that need to be done for it to be perfect. The concept of a dirt cage is great, and he clearly likes it but he needs at least triple the length.
@peters2975
@peters2975 2 жыл бұрын
So basically you went from tiny cage, to a small cage, only 230 square inches from recommended MINIMUM of 450! Flying saucer also is a bad idea and still too small, he needs a wheel! Soil straight from the forest is a BAD idea! All those 'microorganisms' you mentioned together with bacteria will NOT benefit the hamster! You are seriously risking it's life! Using soil itself would be fine but not contaminated! It's an exotic animal! If you want to use soil as substrate its fine as long as it's sterilized, otherwise please use anything else, best option would be paper!

And your video is really well shot and edited, and looks super professional, but I must say the content is worrying; Letting a hamster run around in the outdoors is irresponsible and dangerous, and with your reach (1.8m+) I really think there should be some disclaimers and notices to an impressionable audience that this is not responsible and should not be emulated by anyone, especially children. The hamster could be eaten by Snakes, Owls, Stoats, or others depending on where the person lives, and may just get lost in a hole as you almost experienced! The hamster may also pick up Ticks and Parasites, or Bacteria/Fungal infections which would pretty much be a death sentence of a domestic hamster, or at the least a extremely unpleasant and avoidable experience to the hamster.. Next, the enclosure looks great and you put a bunch of effort in to it! It was a nice upgrade from its previously unsuitable home; But you did not state anything about treatment of the soil or bark or moss or sticks... and Stephan was even eating/storing it... again due to the potential for bacteria/parasites/insects/fungus/etc anything that is not coming from a sterile source should be sterilised before giving to the hamster. Baking the items at >70c for a while should be sufficient. But as other's have commented; he also needs a wheel (so many videos to suggest this), as well :) I (and many others I'm sure) would really love if you can add some disclaimers in the Description/Captions regarding responsible pet (hamster) care to teach kids and parents how to care for their little pets with love, and avoid dangerous (but fun looking) situations :) ~~ I really hope you can do a follow-up to share how little Stephan is doing and how his care/living has progressed! He's so adorable! And really it's your duty as an influencial channel and Stephan's carer to share good care awareness :) If you'd like to invest more time in Soil/Natural enclosures for him; this channel has a ton of good content and research/trials on it; kzbin.info/door/r7SPl3QI9O5ZjO7zx4mOZgvideos (I think it's why I was recommended your video, the Algorithm ;)

Thank you I came here to say all of this and you said it better. The video is very well shot but please DO NOT being your hamster outside or to the woods. He is a desert prey animal. It's amazing he was not eaten. He could hide, from being scared, and you would never see him again and he would not survive. The enclosure is beautiful and so much to dig but it's also much too small for him. Please add him an 8" wheel, I can see you love your hamham.

hamsters do take up existing burrows in the wild. the soil used here doesnt hold burrows that much. Also it is more appropriate to use bigger sized enclosure for such small hamsters. :)

You shouldn't let a pet hamster run around outside like that. Anything could have happened to it stray dog or cat could've caught it. A hawk or owl could've gotten it. Owls sometimes hunt in daytime as well. God knows what could've been in the hole. Something that could have diseases or been rabid or just strong enough to kill a hamster. Hamster would make a tasty meal for a snake. Or you could've just lost him. Also that cage was too small for a hamster and no room for a wheel. I saw no food or water for him. Also, I hope you did research and put in hamster safe plants. Also he was able to reach top edge of cage and the lid does not fasten down. I've seen even small hamsters push up a heavy lid to escape. You really need to do research on proper hamster care.

If your looking for suggestions… pls upgrade the cage it needs more than 600 sq inches in total floor space n please get your hamster a 12 inch wheel. A cork wheel will go perfect with your natural theme. Hamsters can’t control body temperature so if they get wet they can get sick and die so please consider that before adding plants that need to be watered. Dry herbs and sprays for hamsters would be better for natural decor and they are edible. Your hamster is so cute and I hope you are able to make these changes to give ur hamsters a good life

While part time natural enclosures are great, this could have been portrayed a lot better to the viewer. For one, the beginning where the hamster was able to roam free in the woods is absolutely terrible. It may have been a fun experience for the owner, but it is often very stressful when the hamster is in a new environment. Also, keeping a domesticated small animal like a hamster in the wild can risk them being attacked by predators. It also comes with the risk of being lost, eating dangerous things that it is not accustomed to, and being attacked by pests. I strongly believe that this video did not have to include that, because it is setting a bad example for the viewers. Secondly, this was not said to be a part-time enclosure. While this may look great, not only is it too small for the hamster to thrive, but it also does not include a wheel or any other enrichment that a hamster needs to be happy and healthy. And you may say that it was limited resources, but it is very easy to go out and buy a larger tank or cage. If this was mentioned that it is a part-time enclosure where the hamster will not spend a lot of its time in, it would be better. Not to mention how expensive it is to actually go out and get the right soil. Also, collecting from nature may seem like a good idea, and sometimes it is, but he can also risk bringing home pests, disease, and other harmful things. Overall, this could make to be a great video, but it need to be portrayed better to the viewer.

I’d suggest wheel , salt lick , and make sure dirt isn’t wet/moist as wet tail is deadly to hamsters. Are you sure moss/soil from outside doesn’t have pests etc ??? Nice to see time and effort you put into smaller animals

Always pissing me off when watching something like this. It can look cute and enjoyable for a human BUT and this is a VERY VERY BIG BUT : it is dangerous for hamster to walk around like this outside. And it is dangerous to give him this not prepared moss for example. It can contain some worms or something, parasites and Stephan can get sickness. Also the dimensions of your cage are too small. Dwarf hamster needs at least 60x40 cm but this is a bare minimum! Recommended are 100x50 cm for example. And the laying wheel is also bad. He should have a standing wheel with at least 21 cm diameter

I hate to be the one to leave a hate comment but, This is not safe for the hamster! the soil can get moisture in it and make the hamster wet. Ruining its coat that it should be building up and containing a sandbath! WHICH YOU DONT HAVE!! I don’t even like in america or anything british air any of that and my cage is 3 times the size of yours! also use a normal wheel and not a flat one. they could get hurt. Also just a suggestion LEAVE SOME WATR AND FOOB IN THE CAGE. Also look up which plants are safe for hamsters to eat! BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE CAGE. I’m tired of people abusing hamsters they are just like cats exept that they need about 50 times they amount of space in their cage as themself!!
